Over 20 years, 11 albums and hundreds of performances around the globe, Savatage’s dynamic music - which mixes elements of thrash, progressive, power metal and classic hard rock- earned the band a passionate cult following.
Founded in Tampa, Florida by brothers Jon and Criss Oliva, Savatage saw their many musical triumphs overshadowed by personal tragedy. Albums such as 1987’s “Hall of the Mountain King” - their first of eight collaborations with producer and mentor Paul O’Neill - and 1991’s riveting “Streets: A Rock Opera” continue to be celebrated to this day. The death of Criss Oliva on the heels of the breakthrough success of 1993’s “Edge of Thorns” altered the group’s trajectory considerably.
The band experienced a renaissance with their 1995 album “Dead Winter Dead,.” and continued to display a flair for theatricality of their own on their final two albums. An epic reunion performance at 2015’s Wacken Festival before 80,000 fans - showed proof that the crowds will never be gone.

I will never understand why savatage was not as popular as one would expect. Like, in Egypt they were absolutely massive in the 90s. Anyone who was into rock appreciated Savatage. I think the same in east Europe, possibly Asia. Didn't seem to be recognised as one of the biggest bands in the US though for some reason. Weird. Absolute F***ing unmatched geniuses. Deserve a better place in the history books.

I used to see them live in Tampa about four times a year.They used to play at Stadium Lounge that became the RocketClub.They also used to play at the Ritz in Ybor City and LiveStock festival in Zephyrhills Florida where Chriss Olivia was killed in the head on car collision.They used to also play at ML chasers in ClearWater Florida.Those shows rocked like nobody’s business.

Another one which should be finally released for us is Dynamo open air 89 pro shot with Criss Oliva... Any idea yet what´s the last upcoming sava re-release? Wondering what´s the missing E letter. Or is there just a design mistake in the cd spine because there is no that last E release?

What means the name of band?
It's a play on the word "sabotage" which basically means to purposefully destroy, wreck, or ruin something.
The Band at first was named Avatar, due to copyright issues they had to change it and combined it with savage.. you can find a short story about this on wikipedia
savage + avatar = savatage. avatar is criss and jon's old band name

Big fan of both, I understand what evolution means and that things change and off course i have to admit that TSO has given our music a lot and made it wide known to masses beyond metalheads, but I believe that the feeling, energy and emotion that i had as a teenager while listening to Hall of the mountain king, gutter ballet, Power of the night, believe etc is no longer to be found in TSO. I am not even sure if I found it in the Wacken Show!
