One of the best movies ever thanks to the idea surrounding the theme of this movie. I love how it's funny, but gets dark too, just like Groundhogs day w Bill Murray
I think it's more than verbally only- I think the entire concept of being directly dishonest doesn't exist. So they wouldn't hide it because that would be misleading in it's own way. The only hole in my own logic really is like the officers accepting bribes or such, but I mean that could be sorta an olive branch of sorts I suppose too.
Yeah telling the truth doesn't necessarily mean saying everything that's on your mind. A person would still have an imagination but couldn't lie about what the thought was about and how it made them feel when asked about it.
Great concept but makes no sense as to why they're choosing to let everyone know their secrets. They cant lie but they still have the option to remain silent. But hey, maybe im digging a little too deep into a comedy movie
You're not lying if you're not vocal. For example, if i accidentally killed a cat driving home from work and didn't tell anyone, that wouldn't make me a liar. However, if i was asked "did you kill a cat driving home from work" and i said "no", then i'd be a liar. The characters in this movie don't only not know how to lie...they also don't know how to keep quiet...which is odd
Ahhh I see what you mean. That wouldn't be lying. I just wondered if you had something on your mind that you would normally withhold in case others thought you were weird (this is my life). For example... the masturbation comment. If you just masturbated and someone walked in and you're thinking holy crap, I just masturbated and that's all I can think about, but don't want to tell them. (We're getting deep haha).
I feel like Ricky's character was born with a sense that something is wrong with the world. He doesn't really understand why everyone is so personal, he just goes along with it because true deceit or...SHUTTING UP YOURSELF doesn't exist. Also, how do families work in this world? Imagine a woman saying to her son "I wish I pulled out of your father."
Not sure what this movie is about: clip was assigned as part of a course. However, once I was on a date and was in Half Moon Bay, (Tres Amigos, the old one which was WAY better food and ambiance! before the remodel and new owners) and we just ordered food, and sat down. The date asked me a question about how I felt re: a certain very controversial topic. She replied, "Well, if that's how you feel, I don't think we can go out again." I said, "Well, that's a you-problem. I get along with people who believe differently than I do. Shall we just drive back now, or finish eating?" It was like 1 1/4 hour drive back. We did not talk the entire way back, or at least I didn't. For some reason, she continued to contact me. That's not the only time such a thing happened. Once, i picked up a date and went to her door and ended up meeting her sister, mom, other family members. She got in my car, I opened the door, all that. I used to have a little 'stick-on" "Thank You for Not Smoking" on the dash of my car. She said, "You have a problem with smoking?" I said, "No. I just don't want anyone smoking in my car." She said, "Well, if I knew you had a problem with smoking, I wouldn't have gone out with you." I said, "Well, I guess you should get out of the car while we're still parked in front of your house." She got out, said something, IDK what, cuz I didn't care. Date lasted under five minutes. Another time I tried to buy a ticket to an "Ice Cream / Gellato event in SF with a date. She refused to let me pay. Once we went in, she refused to eat anything. IDK why she was even there, cuz we waited in line and everything. Anyway, after that disastrous "getting to know you" she wanted to do some sight-seeing in SF. I told her i didn't feel well and wanted to get home. We drove all the way back from SF about 1 1/2 hours. She continued to call me and wanted to hook-up, but I didn't see why she would. She was a nice person, and very reserved. But, I just felt wierded out that we would wait in line for an hour, pay for tickets, go inside, and she refused to even try a single flavor. I felt we were not a good match. But, maybe we could have been? I just don't see the point in trying to continue to force through anything if it doesn't feel right. This is why I reccomend group dating or staying close to home, low-stakes 'get to know you' type stuff first. As a guy, sometimes it takes just under a few minutes to know it's just not going to happen. I know females who are better at figuring that out quickly. But, they continue to stay on the date and get a meal, movie, or event out of it, the entire time knowing that it's over before it even began. Why? Just bail.
@@SpeKFX yeah we are. The only reason you don't think so is because people only speak when they have something half-way intelligent to say. A lot of our thoughts are bullshit like this.
True, but I don't often have shitty things to say about people. And I don't mean that in a self righteous way. I just don't really care that much about anyone to think bad things about them unless they give me a reason. Especially on a date, I'm mainly thinking about me to be honest
Guys, the reason they speak their minds is that it's part of the culture. Keeping something to yourself is not a cultural norm in this world, just like kidnapping someone is not a cultural norm in our world. To do anything else but to speak your mind, well there is nothing else in this world. The concept of truth and lies do not exist, these people only know things as they "are", and don't understand that "are not" can exist.
What the film overlooks is, everyone would still be familiar with the possibility of honest errors, and for that reason alone would retain some faculty for doubt, therefore wouldn't automatically believe someone who prattles randomly about the afterlife etc. they would hear him out and -- assuming everything else about this world is equal -- they'd assume he was just wrong, or cutting corners in his thinking. Then again, maybe the furtive attitude -- the self-deception that underlies lazy thinking even when alone -- is itself a form of dishonesty\lying? In which case, maybe they assume even lazy superstitious thinking is impossible. Religion is absent in this world because dishonesty is absent, but to me that's a partial non sequitur, or is it? It assumes that all religion is insincere by nature, or at least in origin. A constestable notion. Itself ironically, an assumption lazy enough to be impossible in this world?
If they explained that people can't lie and can't help but say whatever is on their mind, the narrative wouldn't have been a constant reminder that the concept doesn't make sense.
You could argue any form of omission is lying and thus why everyone is compelled to speak their mind as they do. Although, there are many times in the movie where someone is clearly "lying" like for example when in this clip. She talks to her mother and essentially insults him in the conversation. She apologies and instead of stating that he is upset by her remarks, which he clearly is, he says it okay. Hard movie to make if you are too serious with it.
@dchris1990 honesty is only brutal if you're not expecting it. If you'd only ever heard total honesty then you'd be more than able to take it. It's clear that this meant as a comedy/parody and not a rigorous philosophical concept or you wouldn't have dating or casino's or unhealthy food. Instead you'd have a logic based, nearly passionless society.
Lot of holes in the mechanics of this universe. Like the waiter told the woman he took a sip of her drink. Why would she be fine with that just because they live in a world of total honesty?
@TurkiyeCumhurbaskani It's amazing how many lies were left in that world though. mostly self deceptions. Gervais is clearly either telling himself he can't slim down ( a lie) or that he's attractive (not true based on people's reactions) or that he doesn't mind getting less sex than he otherwise would(if anyone thinks that's true I've got a bridge to sell 'em) too bad evolution favors lies or we could experience honesty as the rule and not the exception.
This scene in particular is a bit weird because they are not even telling the truth, but actually not making any sentences that are the truth and not so extremely precise that they are not even making sense.Technically an empty statement as in "All my Ferraris are black" (I don't have any) is not a false statement, so not a lie, same goes for not making a precise response.
If we were taught at early ages to be like this, it would be a much better world. We'd know the true facts, and could better ourselves knowing the things we need to improve.
Do women really care about how much money a guy makes? I mean I know everyone does on some level, but how dependent on other people do you have to be to judge your compatiblity by what's in their bank account? I've always been good with money, but if a woman expressed her attraction to me because of that I'd leave her at the table with a $100 bill and a tear on her cheek
I had one prevailing thought throughout this movie. If everyone based their virtues on physical attractiveness there would be no unattractive people left in the world. A metric so harsh would weed out the undesirables in a few generations.
@Splitter - I am a "live and let live" person. EVERYONE has the right to their life as I see it. That's a main reason I'm a pro-life proponent in the secular purview. There's a lot I like about this movie, but I'm not sure that not lying is the same as saying every thing that happens to pop into your head.
Jack Prather that's where I have the problem with this movie they have no inner monologue or something
Then pretend it takes place in a universe where you're compelled to say everything you think. Still pretty much the same
Not saying something and keeping it secret I’d also a lie
