I like your commentary. Very Bob Ross like. It was the first of your videos that I watched. I like the way that you show other woodworkers pieces as well as what you are doing.
I can see how someone that only works with wood might find this process a bit disconcerting. But quality woodturning tools are made from high speed steel (HSS). The same tool steel that machinists have been using to cut aluminum, steel, and even stainless steel for more than a century. The same goes for the planer blades. And the table saw blade was surely carbide-tipped, which is also commonly used in metalworking. Yes, there are cheap tool steels, even some marketed as HSS, that might show a lot of wear after a job such as this. But a properly sharpened, quality HSS tool would likely still look like new when finished. So the moral of this comment? If you want to save money on your workshop tools, do so elsewhere. Always buy quality cutting tools.
But I'd imagine that the uniformity of the material you're cutting through would have some effect as well? It seems like it would be easier on the tool to cut continuously through a solid piece of aluminium than to cut through something like a piece of epoxy resin with chunks of aluminum embedded sporadically within it.
@@paulvangemmeren9351 Interrupted cuts are common in all types of machining; whether it be with metal, wood, resin, or a combination of materials. There have been many times where I've had to turn a piece of square aluminum or steel stock down to a round rod, just like you might do with wood or resin. The first cuts are typically only hitting on the corners of the square stock until you get down to the round shape. There's no question that interrupted cuts are harder on the tooling, especially carbide tools. But they are quite common.

I'm curious as to how much a good lathe costs? I just bought a mini Mastercraft lathe and I'm kinda scared to use it...I guess we'll see how long it lasts.
I saw the title and cringed, going "that can't be a good idea." And heaven knows it wouldn't have been allowed when I did woodshop in school. But then I had to watch it. There were several things that could have gone wrong, and I imagine cleaning up after couldn't have been fun, sawdust and wood shavings get everywhere already when working wood like that, even with a good ventilation system sucking it up directly from the machines, I imagine it was so much worse with aluminum shaving mixed in. You miss some saw dust or wood shavings and it is little worse than dust collecting everywhere, but aluminum shavings? I imagine those getting on your skin could cause you to really itch with the tiny nicks and cuts the sharp pieces can cause. Course, I could be imagining it worse than it is, as I don't have experience in the regard.
If you're suggesting the project was a waste of time I would agree. Pointless. I don't know why youtube promotes lathe videos. Anyone can use a lathe if they have access to one. I don't understand why people don't at least make nice objects. There's no accounting for taste..!
“Little bit of a pucker factor” you’re forgetting the huge factor of one nail getting caught by a less sharp part of the tool and breaking out of the resin, which would turn the whole thing into a takata airbag

Yah its not that bad. Just use a good shop vac vacuum :)
Can it be wood turning if there is no wood involved?
If you're suggesting the project was a waste of time I would agree. Pointless. I don't know why youtube promotes lathe videos. Anyone can use a lathe if they have access to one. I don't understand why people don't at least make nice objects. There's no accounting for taste..!

Oh my Goodness this is beautiful... awesome work of art
I'm not sure which was scarier when he was started turning the inside of the bowl - Doing it bare handed or doing it while wearing gloves
“Little bit of a pucker factor” you’re forgetting the huge factor of one nail getting caught by a less sharp part of the tool and breaking out of the resin, which would turn the whole thing into a takata airbag
Whats life with a little bit of risk😂
Beautiful piece. Thank you for your service.
The perfect cereal bowl for the guy who says he eats nails for breakfast
"This wood has a nail in it!"
RH: "Hold my beer."
Seriously, interesting idea and turned out great. Makes me wonder what could be done with soft copper BBs...
