    I lost MY Art last year to cancer and his sweet mother this year to Alzheimer's. Make memories AND make plans so that whichever one is left behind they are secure and will be able to continue after the initial waves of pain and shock. The grass withers and the flowers fade. But the Word of our L-rd remains forever.
    You both are blessed beyond your knowing....cherish it every day, whether sunshine or rain....

    Great life you all are living!!! The first year I grew sweet potatoes I did not know about curing them so fresh from the garden bed, I scrubbed them down, and cooked them up, excitedly anticipating a feast. Did not happen! It seemed no matter how much sweetener I added they had very little flavor and a woodie texture, I wouldnt describe it as being tasteful. I soon learned curing is a must! The potato will get a thicker skin and a sweeter potato. Patience and timing is a virtue with sweet potato harvesting..

    An easier way. Just the day before the first frost pull the vines off the SP"s. [ you are taking them to soon from the ground ] Kick a bit of dirt over and showing end. Leave them in the ground for a week then dig them, clean , lay them out to dry a few days in a heated dry place, rap in news paper or another soft paper and place in boxes. They will be sweet as ever. Store in a cool but dry place. A back room is ok.

    So glad to run into your videos. I'm getting about ready to find out if my first ever sweet potatoes grew. (Minnesota). My patch is just like the one in the video, butternuts and sweet potatoes grew into each other's area. We are having warm weather for this late in the year and both types of vines are still looking great.

    We so love sweet potatoes, but they just don't store well, we had wondered maybe the produce section in the supermarket is cooler than home but now that your Nana shared her knowledge on the subject, this is enough to motivate us to planting some, there's an AWESOME Cream of Sweet Potatoe as well as the traditional dishes we all know and love.

  • @littleshepherdfarm2128

    Art and Bri: Yes, they taste a LOT less sweet if you eat them before they are cured. Our local supermarket got some in that weren't cured and we had them one evening for supper. They were very lightly sweetened but only enough to know that they weren't regular potatoes. I thought they tasted extremely bland and starchy but they were okay with fresh salted butter melted on them.

    I received a bunch of sweet potato slips n the mail that I do not remember ordering.I purchase a lot of sweet potatoes as they r a fave & a healthier alternative to white potatoes.So I was happy to grow them.I planted them n raised boxes & they grew & grew & grew. I had 2 go 2 Florida 4 healthcare reasons & left them unattended.They still did wonderfully.By the time I was able 2 get them harvested they were mostly big as a man's boot. I had no idea curing was needed or if I could eat them without doing so or if they could be 2 big 2 eat.I was still under the weather & it was difficult 4 me 2 research them & not even the farmers & Amish I knew could tell me how to cure them.I live n an 1800 square ft home n the city limits with no spare space n my home or garage.I am new 2 gardening.It broke my heart to place them all n the compost pile because I was just unable 2 get answers while sick.This video made it sound so easy. I wish I had found it back then.Does anyone know if they can b 2 big 2 safely consume? How do u store 4 winter?Also can they b canned? Any ideas on a solution 2 curing with no extra room n house or garage? Any ideas & advice appreciated.

    Try as I did ~ there were NO slips available anywhere that we could find here in the NE ~ SO0o I carelessly plopped the half sweet potatoes ( which I even tried to make slips from)
    into a few empty spots...... and was shocked at the lovely dark green vines that covered that empty area. I'm so looking forward to harvesting what I 'planted' last May! Thank you for the helpful advice for curing them also!

    3:36 Just a heads up, for humidity you want a hygrometer. Not a barometer. No use checking barometric pressure for them. 5:38, this is what disappoints me about some of the sweet potato videos. People aren't eating the greens. It's literally free super spinach. But better.

    In the video we just harvested the Sweet Potatoes in the hills, which is where we planted the slips, but after clearing off the vines, I'm finding more tubers now in between the rows, in the trough. They are nice ones, though not necessarily Grade As. We are leaving the vines as a that grew out of the boundary of the Sweet Potato area as a cover crop along with the Hairy Vetch and Field Rye that we planted. They'll act as a cover crop over winter. I know the vines will die back, but they should give protection to the soil and add organic matter. The other vines I dragged to the compost pile. It must have been 100 pounds of vines there. This is an experiment since I've never done it before.

    • @jaylittleton1
      @jaylittleton1 7 лет назад +1

      That brings up a question, is there a chance that vines left in place will grow potatoes on their own next time around?

    Your videos make me feel all warm and toasty. Last year planted lots of slips, very hot summer...got no fruits. Tried not to overwater , maybe did not water enough?
