nice explanation. Im pouring paint. Do i want to layer my colors in my cup in a complimentary order? So yellow, then violet, then red, then green for example
I don't think it really matters because I've heard plenty of artists talk about their paint order and they are "all over the map". What I've always heard is that whatever order you choose you should stick with it. Personally, I lay mine out left to right: white, yellows, reds, blues, burnt umber, black (optional)
@@jimdimitrios1 Don't stress about it. Just pick one and stick with it. There is nothing magical about my system or anyone's system for laying out paint. It's for convenience and familiarity. I think it's best to have the color wheel in hand while choosing colors whether it's paint or fabric or nail polish. You can then choose whether to go the analogous route or complementary or split complementary, etc. Good luck!
Hi Mary. I enjoyed your colour wheel explanation. Are you able to help me with this colour dilema I have. My dining chairs are navy. I have a print on the wall in brighter blue and a persimon orange. I would like to introduce a bright pink (Fusion Mineral Paint "CUREiously pink" on the hall table. Can you envision this colour combination in one large room and if it will be pleasing or jaring. That's very nice of you to say. Have you seen the Part 2 video that I just posted yesterday? It completes the lessons on the color wheel by covering value using the grayscale. Thanks very much!

Hi Mary, I have ordered a wheel. While waiting for it to arrive I have two questions..If I want a certain color, say salmon pink, can the wheel tell me what doses of the three primary colurs to use. Another question: why not just mix the primary colors in the right proportions to get any color instead of buying lots of individual color tubes ? Am I correct in saying that three tubes for the primary colors plus white plus black making 5 is really all I need. I intend to adopt acrylic. Thank you for your help. John, a keen beginner
After i saw this video, i saw another video called Color Wheel Tutorial - How To Mix Paint. That one shows how to use the primary colours to get a lot of other colours and is good for beginners who don't want to spend a lot of money on too many paints, but after you're an intermediate, you could buy the other colours or if you're going to do a lot of painting.
To answer your first question, the color wheel will get you close to your salmon color. It does not tell you what proportion of colors to mix to get salmon. When you begin mixing with say, red, yellow and white you will be close. From that point, you need to make informed decisions based on the color you see. Part of the fun of mixing colors is the nearly infinite variety of colors one can make. There are not nearly that many colors in tubes at the art store. A good beginning for paint mixing is the three primaries plus black and white, as you say. If you want a whole bunch more variety buy a warm and cool of each primary plus black and white. You can paint for a lifetime with just these 8 colors. Buying other colors in tubes is not only fun, but they often cannot be mixed using primaries. Hope this helps.
Thank you Mary. Your video made the wheel so clear to me. I am just starting to venture into coloring books with coloring pencils and I just needed to know what colors to use with each other. I am purchasing a wheel ASAP! I see now how it works and how it helps. Thank you again.
Hi Mary, I ordered mine the other day and it arrived this morning. I am slightly colour blind but can tell if something is lighter or darker. This is an amazing tool I bought mine from eBay for under £2 I think it was. Luvs and Hugs xxxx
You explain this better than my instructor could explain it years back. It took me forever to understand this whole wheel for some redicioous reason but it's sunk in I carried my color wheel everywhere I went for probably about a year a long time ago..
Thank you so much for clarity. I was having the toughest time figuring out which eyeshadow colors go together. This really helped me in my journey of becoming a makeup artist 👩🏾🎤 t
Haha. Well, generally mud (which can be beautiful) is made by mixing several colors together. It's why teachers often tell their students to keep their palette simple. So, although the color wheel does not show what not to mix to make mud you can now avoid making mud by keeping your mixes simple, meaning two colors for starters. Once you can mix those without creating mud try adding a third color in small doses. That's the key!
Thank you so much mary! This helped me with my digital art on figuring out which colors I should use and which I shouldn't. Now my art looks much better!
You can add white or any color that is lighter than green to lighten it. However, adding anything other than white will cause a shift in your original green.
I got colour wheel just cause of tonal values which you didn't comment on. I think, or practice, that painting is more about values then colours. But really cool video for someone starting. I had my share of experience with aquarelle. Would be cool if you make a video on values for some neewbies
Suppose I am making brown colour and by mistake I am getting little Reddish tone and to correct that and to get my actual town which colour is to be added I need some guidance
I'm not sure exactly what your question is, but you can tone down red to make it a more brownish color by adding green. Experiment and you will find what you're looking for. Good luck!
Hi, I like turquoise and the coast paint colour I have is real paint. I'm actually new to art. Cam you tell use the colour the wheel to explain what colours might go nicely with teal? Or what I might need to mix it with to get turquoise ?

Thank you! I'm not a painter but your explanation of how to interpret the various areas of the color wheel [and I have this one] will help me with fabric choices.
Mary, is red the darkest primary color? Is red violet the 1st darkest color in the color wheel? I have took art class before and I learned that violet is the darkest secondary color but is red the darkest primary color? Is red violet the darkest tertiary color?
I think it's subjective but I would say it's a toss up between red and blue on which can be considered darkest. I think blue would make the darkest value over red of the primaries. Since there are so many variations of paint colors, this is some that would be fun to experiment with.
It depends on what colors your gray is made up of. If it is a mix of just black and white, most anything will go with that. If your gray is made up of all three primaries, any primary will go with that. If you can hold up color swatches next to your gray it will be helpful in determining the correct color to go with YOUR gray.

Hello, you do not speak about the Gray scale on that tool. What is the usé or it ? Thank.
You can compare a color you're trying to paint (like from a photograph) to the tints & tones between black and white by holding the grayscale against it to get an idea of how much black or white to add to a color to get that same hue.
The gray scale is all about value. That's another lesson (yet to be made), but it is for determining lightness to darkness.

Where do you get one of those color wheels
Google Color Wheel and a list will appear.
From where to buy this?
Hi Mary, Pls share the brand name of the CW you used in this video. Thank you. PS I wonder if amazon has it?
The Color Wheel company

You're very welcome, Coran.
I want to buy this one what's the name of this color weel please
Is any link of this moving card available on internet for use
I'm sorry, not that I'm aware of. You might want to poke around and see what you can find online.
I'm only just learning about colours theory and this colour wheel is great, thanks for explaining it
You're welcome!
What if i want to paint my living room grey what is the colour i can add as a complementary to match grey please madam
Mohamed Fatihi don't paint your living room grey. You will not like it.
It depends on what colors your gray is made up of. If it is a mix of just black and white, most anything will go with that. If your gray is made up of all three primaries, any primary will go with that. If you can hold up color swatches next to your gray it will be helpful in determining the correct color to go with YOUR gray.
Where can I get this?
Your instruction is wonderful!!
Thank you, Susie!
Where did you buy your color wheel from? Thank
It was a long time ago. Probably Blick Art Materials.
How do you use the value feature?
If you look at the color wheel part two and begin at one minute 50 I explain how value and color go hand-in-hand.
Thank you was really a good help for my florist study.
Same
You're very welcome. OOh, I love florals.
Where can I order this color wheel?
I would check online for the art store of your choosing, i.e. Black, Michael's, or better yet, see if you can pick it up at a local store.
Preferably at your local art store, or online if you must. Google for your favorite store.
Please excuse my ignorance, but what does the compliment mean?
In this case it means the opposite on the color wheel. Red and green. Blue and orange. Yellow and violet.
Excellent. Really useful. I have this colour wheel and font use it as I found it complicated as a beginner when I should be using it more.
I'm glad it was useful. Makes me happy.
Thank you Mary this was a great help video ❤️
