Friday Freakout - Skydiver's Parachute Rips In Half!!

- This was from my 6th jump. Cat. D2 AFF. The slider shot down immediately, leading to a hard opening. The opening was hard enough to cause the canopy to explode, leaving 6 cells on the reserve side and 3 on the cutaway side. I immediately cut away and deployed the reserve, which I landed safely. I cracked a couple ribs and bruised a few more during opening. I took two weeks off to heal, and then raced back to the dropzone to start jumping again. I finished my A license a month or two later!
Jumped with 2 parachutes, landed with 3, legend…...
I'd blame your exit for this, I always exit when the plane is on the ground and never had this issue.
This obviously could have been prevented, if the skydiver didn’t deploy his parachute this wouldn’t have happened lol
Parachutes are costly and you just converted one into two!!
Bravo!😂
Damn rental gear
Good reaction, you did a great job
Glad to see the "white dot" appear so quickly :)
Haha yeah, when you look up and see that, you don't really need to think about chop or not.

A splendid reaction time Sir!
He went from 9 cell 230sqft to 7 cell 170sqft, just land it you'll be fine.
Do 7 cells fly slower than 9 cells with comparable wing loadings?
@@jaffacalling53 Yes, but they have a different attack angle during landing (steeper)
You don't even NEED a reserve when you can just turn your main into two parachutes.
AFF level 7, a brand new Navigator 230, opened so hard, broke 2 A lines. Was steerable, able to flare , landed it. Concussion so bad, I didn't go back for my first solo fun jump with my own gear waiting for 2 weeks.
Did you go back and finish?
You're was dye...
That sounds like a slider issue. A new huge canopy is a bit harder to pack and can slide around. I hate hearing that kind of stuff because it's a very safe sport if done right.
Video or it didn’t happen
@@engscott78 Wait until he gets a dik under mal or whatever it's called. I had that twice in a row. You really need to be careful where your junk goes! Next time wear your gopro L7!
That's why you never EVER pick the Purple one!
The student had a line over malfunction and dealt with it.
I didn't know Dollar Tree sold parachutes.
Probably caused by the extra weight of your large balls , it looks like fun but I could never do it unfortunately, hope you landed safely and continue enjoying it 👍
Yeah he is now licensed now and jumps frequently.
A tandem jump is in some ways the easiest extreme thing you can do in life. You just have to be present. Thats it. Just exist. You can do it. And you should. Prove to yourself that fear is an emotion which can be controlled.
Had that happen once but it was a collision with an other jumper on opening. CRW jump. Other jumper was knocked out under a good canopy came to later before landing. I rode the mess down to 3000 cut way landed fine under a 26’phantom round.
Beautiful exit!
Atleast it would have been a quick decision to cut away
Dude with the camera appears to have gone pretty deep.
Craig Mitchell nah, he was in the saddle by 3 I believe
He's at 3,800 feet @ 1:05. Throws pilot chute 4 seconds later falling at approximately 176 feet per second. Open at about 3k'.🤘🏼
@@DrDownsize guess my age and length of time away from jumping has affected my judgement.
He would was flying high performance. I flew a 79 for work jumps and didn't like opening below 4k. My instinct tells me your AFFI knew he blew the canopy up and just wanted to go low so he didn't fall through him. Vertical separation.
@@craigmitchell4407 You do realize AFF students pull way up higher. There's no reason instructors should too. He pulled his regular altitude.
Even a bad chute helps you get back to the ground.
We used to say "If you are going to go in under a ball of s*$£ go in under a big ball of s*$£.
Kudos for quick EPs.
Was the injuries from the torn chute opening? (sorry, novice here. I did read the report, wondering if it's the reason)
I noticed his bag seemed damaged/dirty before he jumped and it seemed when opening that the tear ocurred on that spot but i might be wrong ? i'd expect a parachute to be that fragile
No sir. That's the container. Inside the container is another container with the canopy in it called a d-bag, deployment bag. I believe by experience and watching only, it was an opening with forces enough to tear the canopy in half. Sometimes a student canopy can have lots of jumps on it, should be retired, but the cost of a new canopy to some places is more important than a human life I guess. Or it could be a freak accident.
@@mikescott2879 or a shitty pack job. If slider went down fast and opening was hard as a result.
Maybe a line over combined with an old canopy? Can't really tell from the video...
@@mikescott2879I’ve met a few d-bags in my lifetime.
Slider went down waaay too fast
When your 170 wants to become a 120..... And never tells you..........
Master Chief 00117 it’s really a great excuse to triple downsize. 😂
Hope he was ok.
well - i had open like this. Canopy "survived", i was cursing till +- 300 meters...
Why did instructors reserve canopy yeet itself when the main came out? Good thing he wasnt relying on the plan b.
Doing CRW on a solo jump. That's a first.
SkydiverClassC yeah, I like to party 🤣
Arr nothing a few horse hair stitches wont fix, be good as new for the next jump
Ah yes! The good old two / seven split - Nice work
What jump number was this?
6. Lol
You really shouldn’t buy your canopy at the dollar store.
It's AFF so it's obviously not his rig
@@jonathangaliano2617 its a joke...
He could have grabbed the risers and kicked his legs to get out of this. I see this every day.
🤣
Bro
unbelievable😯
Was it a FORD canopy ?
If it was a Tesla, it would have filmed itself. And deployed its own reserve.
Of course not, Fords get themselves out of trouble and don't rely on bailouts
I hate when that happens....
Next time don't use masking tape for a repair job.....may have worked with the parachutes in the sixties but not today.
Call me brain dead. A little instability on the rookies part but not problem.
brain dead
Does anybody else notice a rubber band sticking out of the flap?! The packer needs a talking to
Good eye! That’s actually a modification on the container it’s self and not a part of the D-bag. I don’t recall the purpose of it though.
@@theadrenalinestream515 really? i think youre kidding!
Plis suscrib ruclips.net/video/vsogRqvgN0k/видео.html
MCBAdrenalineStream probably to hold a static line in when packed and not in use for that.
Was that supposed to happen?
Yes, all parachutes are meant to tear in half upon opening.
look locate cut away reserve bro
Hey The Adrenaline Stream, do you have an email address at which we could contact you regarding this video? We would be interested to discuss a license to use this video if this is generally possible? (i.e. via email) 🙂 Cheers, Felix
The most important question of all; did he buy the rigger a crate of beer?
Depends on whether that rigger packed his main too.
@@bjb7587 🤣
How the parachute they rip
they How paraschute rip the
i can land that
Or it will land you...
Anyone could land that... they just probably won’t survive lmao
Curious, what is a statistical fail rate of reserves? I would love to go skydiving.....but the chance of a reserve fail, scares the crap out of me.. ( go figure, i daily commute by motorcycle, and to me the experience to "calculated risk" is low. Per my brain, and seat time, but in reality, if i get it wrong ONCE,in just a second or two, it could be a killer) Not looking for an argument about either sport. Any sport is deadly, just skydiving APPEARS limited in known options with a loooong way down, full of nasty dreadfull thoughts, before the big smack. Has someone ever done a main, and 2 reserve setup? and if not why it technically not worth carrying a second reserve? Again, not arguing, or looking for a who is better. Im just looking for facta, to help ease my mind, so I feel better when I get into it.
Not sure about a two reserve setup.. No one I’ve seen has ever done that simply due to bulk. Think of parachutes like condoms. Less is more, until it’s not. Haha. There are “cutaway rigs” with three canopies designed to chop one, but those are pretty much exclusively for R&D. I can tell you the vast majority of skydiving fatalities occur under properly functioning main canopies flown by experienced jumpers for the aforementioned reason. Statistically you are FAR more likely to be seriously injured or killed on a bike (I actually had an R6 until I sold it for my own parachute). In my experience, the thought of gear failure makes you more alert early on in your skydiving career, then becomes just another factor for consideration. I haven’t really ever thought “what if it doesn’t open” since before my first jump. Honestly I would say find a good dropzone that lets you jump “solo” your first time (if you want to “solo” first) then just book it. I’ve never regretted it!
Reserves have a VERY low fail rate. They are packed differently to mains (in a way which is even more reliable) and are only packed by riggers who are licensed and regulated, so very few people are qualified to pack them.
They also have different mechanisms to trigger the deployment sequence, they are essentially spring loaded so they shoot out when deployed.
It’s a cliche but skydiving really is as safe as the people doing it. If you jump at a reputable drop zone (most are these days) with good instructors, with reliable and well-maintained kit, and MOST IMPORTANTLY you follow the rules and don’t do stupid shit... your risk level becomes very very low.
In the early days of skydiving and in the military now there are things called frontcontainer reserves which you could take with you but ive never seen or heard of anyone doing that and it would probably take extra training because i dont think you can pull those flying on your belly
I believe most injuries and deaths happen under a fully functioning canopy, my guess is from swooping.
Statistically the chances of both chutes failing is extremely slim. There are a few factors why this is the case. Injuries and fatalities are generally caused by human error not equipment failure.
Multiple reserves is unorthodox. The unfamiliarity and uniqueness of the setup can arguably cause it's own issues and be dangerous.
Scuba diving is statistically more deadly than skydiving.
1:33 The slider was open to fast.

Evgenich 31 you can see the white reserve. I chased the pink and black canopy for a minute after opening, but we lost it.

Body position.
Brian Weinkamer all of it
@@theadrenalinestream515 with an opening that fast, I figured you'd have less time to screw up body position. I was wrong.
Sit up a little at opening.
Body position was totally fine for a student. Also, that wasn't even a hard opening, a bit fast but not hard at all. Hard is explosive AF, he would've been out of frame within a fraction of a sec.
John 3.16-21
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
Mark 1.15
