None of them knew they could “steal” Bankai, only “seal”them. Big difference. They figured if they got their Bankais “sealed” that with the help of their vice-captains, they could figure out how to break the “seal” ultimately swinging the battle in their favor because they can’t defeat them without Bankai. Had they known ahead of time they could “steal” and not “seal” they wouldn’t have ever used them which is why Byakuya tells Renji not to use his even though that was originally his plan. Since the anime cut out the dialogue, all the captains had very different plans when they activated their bankai: Kommamura & Toshiro: Wanted to observe the bankai seal for themselves Byakuya: believed they could only seal 1 bankai at a time and wanted Renji to kill As Nodt Soi Fon: was trying to kill the Sternritter before the seal happened And none of them knew they were stealing bankai, that's viewer info only, they thought they were sealing it

Nah, Quincy didn’t destroy the soul society the same way Pain did. Solidifying himself as a threat before as the leader of the akatsuki, and killing Jiraiya. Then in the invasion, he kills Kakashi as well, and puts Tsunade out of commission. Honestly, Quincy invasion doesn’t compare imo. Only thing keeping it hype is the visuals and the non censoring. How to put this: Quincy invasion LOOKS better, Pains invasion IS better. Quincy first invasion is really good, second one not so much.

I love how the title is “Kill the Shadow” as the Soul Reapers trying to kill the Quincies yet the complete opposite happens as the shadow (Quincies) kills the light (soul reapers) since the light is clad in black while the shadow is clad in White, as with all Bleach villains. Perfectly encapsulates the Yin Yang Abstract nature of BLEACH.
@17:00 great question because it does seem like that as we the viewers know that kind of thing, but remember in the writing, leading up to it, Soul Society "assumed" that the Quincies can "seal" the BanKais because Sasakibe mentioned something about it, hence why when Byakuya and the rest, would be it to the test, because Sealing is.. obviously, different from stealing lol but that's why when they all unleashed it and then lost it, they were all surprised that their BanKai were stolen. So the reveal factor is the fact that NOW Soul Society knows that the Quicies steals instead of seal. Great reaction and discussion as always!
A lot of mistakes may have happened but SS was caught completely with their pants down facing enemies they don't know anything about who are incredibly strong. Like if they were the arrancar, they can toy with them till they learned more but the Quincies came in hot with a strong intent to kill and no time to waste. Plus aren't quincies technically humans? It's naturally to think such a massive hole in his chest from that would be fatal.
in defense of the captains, they didnt know they stole bankai. They thought it was a seal. Byakuya wanted his to get sealed so he could figure out how they could counter it. a good plan, but they had the wrong information
The whole squad missed the fact that Byakuya knowlingly sacrificed his Bankai to see if he could find a way to "break the seal" since it was obvious all the captains and lieutenants would need bankai to be competitive. The issue was that the bankais weren't being sealed as he was told, but being stolen.
I get what Byakuya was doing. With the info of them just sealing Bankai's, they can technically still use their Shikais so it wouldn't have much of a difference. But seeing the process in person, they might be able to find a way to reverse it and then use it again to win since it seemed there was NO way they'd win without it. Plus if they can only seal one, then Renji would be able to freely use his. The only thing that Byakuya should've done was let Renji be the experiment since it's much inferior still.

13:19 also, to be fair to this specific point...you gotta keep in mind the soul reapers are all in "panic mode", right now: ●Hollows are dissapearing at an alarming rate, which is throwing off the balance of the world. ●this new enemy, which hasnt been seen for a long time, just walked straight into their headquaters, without sounding any type of alarm(nobody knew they infiltrated until much later) ●the enemy has basically killed a whole squad, and one of their toptier soldiers(whos at captain level) like it was nothing. ●they declared war, and said theyll show up as an army in 5 days. ●instead of waiting 5 days, they show up 30 minutes later, and start killing thousands in just a few minutes. ●icing on the cake, they can steal their bankai...THIS POINT SPECIFICALLY, the soul reapers didnt really take that idea into consideration...didnt even think it was possible...itd be different if they "sealed" it, because they would imply they still had it and just couldnt use it....but this is the equivalant of having a trump card, and then having it snatched from ya hand...they just straight up take It...treated their banki like a goddam pokemon.. Overall, if you notice...the situation keeps getting worse and worse...so its almost understandable that a few ppl are making some sudden mistakes... THE QUINCIES ARE PLAYING CHESS WITH THESE PPL
I think evan was exactly right, the captain's zanpakuto is extremely personal to them, especially their bankai. That, coupled with the fact that they have never heard of a technique that can steal bankai, left them blindsided and very disadvantaged.
If it's just a sealing, they are absolutely will try another way to unseal it. Remember , soul reapers with bankai have better connection / communication with their zanpakutos. So , the captain especially can get help to unseal it from internally , by their zanpakutos spirit not just from their vice-cap from the outside. We can see this in Toshiro, he can't hear hyourinmaru anymore after the stealing, and that the worse thing that he literally afraid of.
You're literally only saying that because people are dying. The only thing that has happened is the Sternritters one sidely beating the Soul Reapers. That's it.
They didnt knew about them stealing their bankai. They just thought they somehow cancel it or seal it. Byakuya literally explained to the reader that he knows that it is dumb but they cant win anyways so he still used his bankai so he can create an opening for renji or at least figure out how you can possibly counter it.
Then the correct move would have been to make renji use his bankai to observe how they operate. It was a horrible move by byakuya he could have played that way better

Nahh everything they have cut so far has been basically meaningless and it’s to make room for later on the arc so we can get way more fights and dialogue that they didn’t get in the manga. The creator is controlling the entire pacing of this arc so it’s all for a reason what they are doing. i think byakuya and a few others do. but just knowing them isn't always enough. there's also the level of reiatsu or "spiritual pressure" and if it's just not strong enough they can't win. bankai also boosts that level by 5 to 10 times (it's not just a technique, it's a multiplier). so not having bankai is actually a really heavy nerf.
If they all took Myuri's advice, when he originally told Yammamoto the sternritter wouldve been fuqed. The Sternritter were secretly improving, when no one even knew they were alive, the shiningami were stagnating, even the rogue ones, if the shiningami had known the quincies were studying them, waiting for the chance for a series of surprise attacks; they definitely wouldn't need their bankais. Everyone would be op.
@@dencheq He warned Yammamoto post his fight with Uryu Ishida, that seeing that he was alive, and young, must've meant that there has to be more, potentially an army of Quincies prepping for a day of revenge against the Shiningami; for what they did to the Quincies. But Yammamoto just brushed it off, probably too high in his own mind to take the word of a subordinate, he had to be the "boss" no one tells him how to run his show; that is what led to his and his subordinates' demise.

Urahara is distracted and internally panicking. He was told in that offscreen conversation while Ichigo was fighting that over 2000 shinigami have died. As a former Captain he knows that means over 70% of each and every Court Guard Squad has already been massacred.
I know the captains using their Bankai's seems stupid, but there is a lot to consider. 1. As the captains are fighting hundreds of shinigami are being slaughtered. So time is of the essence to reduce casualties. 2. The Sternritter's Blut is much more potent than the shinigami's Shikai. They can't hope to deal any meaningful damage without their Bankai's, and this is one of the sternritters' BASE abilities. Plus, remember time is of the essence. 3. The shinigami don't know that exact circumstances of the Bankai nullification. They are operating under false information that were based on Chojiro's first hand accounts at coming into contact with it. 4. Since the shinigami are operating under the false pretense that it's a seal and not plundering they believe that they could potentially manage to break the seal if they engage it. 5. In order to understand the full range of what the sternritter's general abilities are, they have to experience everything that can be potentially used against them. Some one has to be the guinea pig and prod the enemy. 6. Since the captains are all in separate locations each facing their own separate battles and out of contact with the other squad captains they can't fight with the mindset of "one of the other squad captains will sacrifice their Bankai so I don't have to" they have to engage the enemy like their isn't a second chance. And again, time is of the essence. It was just a really unfortunate coincidence that 4 of the captains used their Bankai's simultaneously. And that's all.

Byakuya is an idiot for this reason only. He should have made renji use his bankai first so he could assess how the opponents abilities work. His bankai is worth more than renjis so that was a huge tactical error on his part

I personally don't blame Byakuya for releasing bankai whilst knowing there was the strong possibility of his bankai being sealed away, simply because a seal is easily something you know is in the realm of reversibility(as in your power is just locked away somewhere and just can't be accessed at that moment). On top of that Byakuya full well knew he was going to be a sacrifice and that from his battle, either something relevant would be learned or it would be a step to victory with Abarai by his side. Also encapsulating on that Shunsui says as Kuchiki had said before, the enemy was just one you had to use bankai on. Shunsui also notes that there wasn't enough time for them to come up with proper plans and evasive maneuvers and all the likes. Lastly, the made it pretty clear that there was a difference between sealing and stealing. I mean the scene with Toshiro literally wailing for Hyorimaru to answer just gave me chills. Knowing how close Soul reapers are close to their Zanpakutou, I figured it was akin to a person not being able to hear their inner voice or their mind speak to them or more bluntly not being able to hear oneself speak. The Toshiro reacted after the bankai it seemed as though, Hyorinmaru's presence was then absent from the blade he was carrying like literally nothing there. I really felt for the soul reapers, they can't the enemy with shikai alone but they can't use bankai either. Overall great episode, thanks for the reaction.

In fact, it was because the captains had a better chance of surviving and fighting for their experience and power without their bankai, but they did so hoping to break the supposed seal, when they realized that they were actually being robbed, it was when they repented.

I think is an issue of translation We had an idea on how the stealing of Bankais worked cause we saw Ichigo The captains didnt know what the quincys were doing with the Bankai, Sasakibe died with out actually explaining it, but they knew they couldnt be in fear of not being able to use their bankai or losing the war againsts strong enemies, so some of them decided to sacrifice themself to gatter data in how the seal was actually working and how to break it... But it turns out that it wasnt a seal, and what i mean by seal, or what they thought the sealing was... It was about reverting their bankais into shikais, "sealing" the bankai into the shinigamis sword preventing from using it ... Not stealing it into that medallion

Just to clarify, yes there was an arc in the anime where they faced off against their own swords, but that arc was just filler. It wasn't canon, so canonically that never happened. Therefore they didn't know it could happen.
I think most of yall are missing the point that Quincy's powers are nearly unlockable especially physically as their powers are amassed by the very particles of existence.
That wasn’t a dumb moment for Byakuya legit they didn’t know their bankai gets stolen they thought it was just a deal. Also Byakuya and shunsui explained it there had to be a test subject to say.

Besides, they shouldn't assume Bankai can be STOLEN because the Bankai is literally a part of themselves and their Zanpakuto since the Zanpakuto manifests based on its wielder. Besides, they assumed the Bankai could be SEALED, not stolen. Being sealed means the seal can be broken. Door's locked. That's what Byakuya was counting on and was trusting Renji to be able to break that seal. However, it turned out that the Bankai was STOLEN instead. That wasn't information those captains had at that time. Gotta separate YOUR knowledge from the character's knowledge.
Even if you diden’t read the manga you should know that urehara has bankai cos when ichigo did his bankai training yoroichi said that kenpachi is the only captain in the history of soulsociety that made captain rank without bankai and with the methot that ichigo used it took urehara 3 days to get bankai
Thing with them trying bankai is that not only did they think Quincies just tried to seal bankai, so there's no harm in trying it, but Ichigo literally powered through it being used on him. It's reasonable to think that maybe it won't work on strong captains just like it didn't with Ichigo.

in defense of the captains, they didnt know they stole bankai. They thought it was a seal. Byakuya wanted his to get sealed so he could figure out how they could counter it. a good plan, but they had the wrong information
The whole squad missed the fact that Byakuya knowlingly sacrificed his Bankai to see if he could find a way to "break the seal" since it was obvious all the captains and lieutenants would need bankai to be competitive. The issue was that the bankais weren't being sealed as he was told, but being stolen.
There is no difference since either way they would lose without it.

I get what Byakuya was doing. With the info of them just sealing Bankai's, they can technically still use their Shikais so it wouldn't have much of a difference. But seeing the process in person, they might be able to find a way to reverse it and then use it again to win since it seemed there was NO way they'd win without it. Plus if they can only seal one, then Renji would be able to freely use his. The only thing that Byakuya should've done was let Renji be the experiment since it's much inferior still.
in the manga renji asks to be the bait but byakuya says he wouldn't have the ability to make an accurate analysis while fighting the enemy

●Hollows are dissapearing at an alarming rate, which is throwing off the balance of the world.
●this new enemy, which hasnt been seen for a long time, just walked straight into their headquaters, without sounding any type of alarm(nobody knew they infiltrated until much later)
●the enemy has basically killed a whole squad, and one of their toptier soldiers(whos at captain level) like it was nothing.
●they declared war, and said theyll show up as an army in 5 days.
●instead of waiting 5 days, they show up 30 minutes later, and start killing thousands in just a few minutes.
●icing on the cake, they can steal their bankai...THIS POINT SPECIFICALLY, the soul reapers didnt really take that idea into consideration...didnt even think it was possible...itd be different if they "sealed" it, because they would imply they still had it and just couldnt use it....but this is the equivalant of having a trump card, and then having it snatched from ya hand...they just straight up take

I think evan was exactly right, the captain's zanpakuto is extremely personal to them, especially their bankai. That, coupled with the fact that they have never heard of a technique that can steal bankai, left them blindsided and very disadvantaged.
If it's just a sealing, they are absolutely will try another way to unseal it. Remember , soul reapers with bankai have better connection / communication with their zanpakutos. So , the captain especially can get help to unseal it from internally , by their zanpakutos spirit not just from their vice-cap from the outside. We can see this in Toshiro, he can't hear hyourinmaru anymore after the stealing, and that the worse thing that he literally afraid of.

They didnt knew about them stealing their bankai. They just thought they somehow cancel it or seal it. Byakuya literally explained to the reader that he knows that it is dumb but they cant win anyways so he still used his bankai so he can create an opening for renji or at least figure out how you can possibly counter it.
Then the correct move would have been to make renji use his bankai to observe how they operate. It was a horrible move by byakuya he could have played that way better

@@abandz1132 Considering that I read the manga, yeah I do. Back in the day we knew how badly written the arc was. Case in point this episode with the captains being dumbfucks and using their Bankais when they know they will be stolen.
captains should've trained in kido/hado and stuff. heck they should've trained like zaraki
i think byakuya and a few others do. but just knowing them isn't always enough. there's also the level of reiatsu or "spiritual pressure" and if it's just not strong enough they can't win. bankai also boosts that level by 5 to 10 times (it's not just a technique, it's a multiplier). so not having bankai is actually a really heavy nerf.
The reason byakuya and co was shocked was because they originally thought that the quincies were sealing their bankai but they are stealing them.
If they all took Myuri's advice, when he originally told Yammamoto the sternritter wouldve been fuqed. The Sternritter were secretly improving, when no one even knew they were alive, the shiningami were stagnating, even the rogue ones, if the shiningami had known the quincies were studying them, waiting for the chance for a series of surprise attacks; they definitely wouldn't need their bankais. Everyone would be op.

@@dencheq He warned Yammamoto post his fight with Uryu Ishida, that seeing that he was alive, and young, must've meant that there has to be more, potentially an army of Quincies prepping for a day of revenge against the Shiningami; for what they did to the Quincies. But Yammamoto just brushed it off, probably too high in his own mind to take the word of a subordinate, he had to be the "boss" no one tells him how to run his show; that is what led to his and his subordinates' demise.

Urahara is distracted and internally panicking. He was told in that offscreen conversation while Ichigo was fighting that over 2000 shinigami have died. As a former Captain he knows that means over 70% of each and every Court Guard Squad has already been massacred.
I know the captains using their Bankai's seems stupid, but there is a lot to consider.
1. As the captains are fighting hundreds of shinigami are being slaughtered. So time is of the essence to reduce casualties.
2. The Sternritter's Blut is much more potent than the shinigami's Shikai. They can't hope to deal any meaningful damage without their Bankai's, and this is one of the sternritters' BASE abilities. Plus, remember time is of the essence.
3. The shinigami don't know that exact circumstances of the Bankai nullification. They are operating under false information that were based on Chojiro's first hand accounts at coming into contact with it.
4. Since the shinigami are operating under the false pretense that it's a seal and not plundering they believe that they could potentially manage to break the seal if they engage it.
5. In order to understand the full range of what the sternritter's general abilities are, they have to experience everything that can be potentially used against them. Some one has to be the guinea pig and prod the enemy.
6. Since the captains are all in separate locations each facing their own separate battles and out of contact with the other squad captains they can't fight with the mindset of "one of the other squad captains will sacrifice their Bankai so I don't have to" they have to engage the enemy like their isn't a second chance. And again, time is of the essence. It was just a really unfortunate coincidence that 4 of the captains used their Bankai's simultaneously.
And that's all.

I personally don't blame Byakuya for releasing bankai whilst knowing there was the strong possibility of his bankai being sealed away, simply because a seal is easily something you know is in the realm of reversibility(as in your power is just locked away somewhere and just can't be accessed at that moment). On top of that Byakuya full well knew he was going to be a sacrifice and that from his battle, either something relevant would be learned or it would be a step to victory with Abarai by his side. Also encapsulating on that Shunsui says as Kuchiki had said before, the enemy was just one you had to use bankai on. Shunsui also notes that there wasn't enough time for them to come up with proper plans and evasive maneuvers and all the likes.
Lastly, the made it pretty clear that there was a difference between sealing and stealing. I mean the scene with Toshiro literally wailing for Hyorimaru to answer just gave me chills. Knowing how close Soul reapers are close to their Zanpakutou, I figured it was akin to a person not being able to hear their inner voice or their mind speak to them or more bluntly not being able to hear oneself speak. The Toshiro reacted after the bankai it seemed as though, Hyorinmaru's presence was then absent from the blade he was carrying like literally nothing there. I really felt for the soul reapers, they can't the enemy with shikai alone but they can't use bankai either. Overall great episode, thanks for the reaction.
There is literally no difference between sealing and stealing. If anything it would be easier to get something back that's stolen than sealed.

We had an idea on how the stealing of Bankais worked cause we saw Ichigo
The captains didnt know what the quincys were doing with the Bankai, Sasakibe died with out actually explaining it,
but they knew they couldnt be in fear of not being able to use their bankai or losing the war againsts strong enemies, so some of them decided to sacrifice themself to gatter data in how the seal was actually working and how to break it...
But it turns out that it wasnt a seal, and what i mean by seal, or what they thought the sealing was... It was about reverting their bankais into shikais, "sealing" the bankai into the shinigamis sword preventing from using it
... Not stealing it into that medallion

Just to clarify, yes there was an arc in the anime where they faced off against their own swords, but that arc was just filler. It wasn't canon, so canonically that never happened. Therefore they didn't know it could happen.
I think most of yall are missing the point that Quincy's powers are nearly unlockable especially physically as their powers are amassed by the very particles of existence.

Besides, they assumed the Bankai could be SEALED, not stolen. Being sealed means the seal can be broken. Door's locked. That's what Byakuya was counting on and was trusting Renji to be able to break that seal. However, it turned out that the Bankai was STOLEN instead. That wasn't information those captains had at that time. Gotta separate YOUR knowledge from the character's knowledge.
Next episode they're gonna explain what those letters meant. In a sense the letters represent the quincies bankai.
