SHOP STORIES: Death By Dysentery (A Tragic New Mexico Elk Hunt)

  • In this episode of SHOP STORIES, Randy Newberg takes us back to an old New Mexico archery elk hunt that never aired on television. There are plenty of reasons why it didn't make the cut for TV, which Randy goes into more detail about.
From an overprotective resident sticking nails into the sidewall of Randy's tires, a cameraman quitting at last minute due to being overworked and underpaid, and being overconfident about being able to handle "5 Alarm Chili"; there are plenty of stories to be told.

I really enjoy the “shop talk” lol. You have a way of telling stories that keeps me rolling and a smile on my face the whole time. I can relate to the chili as I had some myself one time that lit me up and for the next 4 days I thought I was dying from the rearrangement of my stomach. It took me a long time to eat chili after that and chili was one of my favorite meals especially using the Wild game I’d harvested. I happened to be deer hunting in the Midwest when my story takes place and I believe I probably ruined some of the best places I had to hunt forever. Keep em coming and we will continue to be very entertained

Hahaha great story. My brother had a similar experience on Owl Mountain in Colorado. We were walking in one morning and he told me to "go on ahead". I unfortunately hadn't got out of earshot when his phase 1 kicked in, which caused me to giggle. That caused him to laugh, which expedited him into phase 2-7. Between the laughing and groaning I think we chased all the elk out before daylight, but it was funny.

Keep them coming Randy. I am from NM and have been through Magdalena many times. When you were talking about the VLA I was laughing so hard because there is nothing there for a long long way. These stories make up who we are as men who hunt. The troubles we encounter and how we adapt and overcome them will make camp fire stories that our boys will tell for years to their children. My boys and I tell a similar story of eating at a little place north of Albuquerque in a town called Cuba while turkey hunting. El Brunnos is where we ate and my son was pooping blood from the hot salsa and queso and we had to get him some Vaseline. The kids tell that story all the time. Hunting has created a bond with my children that will never be broken and they will carry on our love for the outdoors. Thank you for making these "real" videos of what hunting looks like.

Randy, one of the funniest stories I’ve heard in a long time. As others have said, I had tears rolling down my cheeks listening to your story because I could relate. Ate at a Thai restaurant in Bozeman the day before the first day of elk season while waiting for our pickup by our outfitter. Ordered an “extra amount of hots and veggies” thinking I’d get my “roughage” for the next couple of days. The following morning (in the woods) which was Day 1 of the hunt, I ended up in exactly the same position (pun intended) as you. No need to continue because you know the rest, LOL.

Love the shop talk episodes. Hunting how it really happens, not just edited for TV.

This popped up on my feed and I thought I really like this guy, but I don’t have time for a 48 minute story. Well, my wife was still sleeping and so were her 2 German shepherds. My shepherd was up with me, but trying to go back to sleep and so was I, but I was laughing so hard and trying to hold it in because if I wake up my wife early morning on a Saturday or the dogs who will then wake her up, my butt is not what I will need to worry about if you know what I mean. I have been there in the upper peninsula of michigan deer hunting, so it made this even funnier. I listened to the whole story and was left wanting more. Please keep them coming, you are a “GREAT” story teller !!!!!

"It felt like I was riding bareback on a belt sander." 😂😂 oh man! That had me going. Mountain money and wet wipes...never leave home without 'em. Love your stories Randy, they're really good. We'll gladly take some more if you're willing to do them.

These stories are hilarious. The stories of hunts like this are what make the whole experience interesting. Sometimes you get a trophy animal, sometimes this happens. You never know what kind of hunt it'll be.

Randy, that's just another reason I love watching your site here. YOU KEEP IT REAL!!! I have to say though, I just about hurt myself from laughing!!!!! I'm 74 years old and have to say, funny enough, that I've been there!!! Once hunting in Colorado, when I was 18 we had eaten some venison that had been shot for "camp meat". Well, opening morning found me with a death grip on a small spruce tree doing exactly what you were doing behind that little small bush you talked about. Man, talk about Montazumas Revenge! Yeah, I can definitely identify with you. Funny now but not at the time!!! Keep these great stories coming. You are keeping it real. Much enjoyed and appreciated!

Like a lot of things, those situations get a bit funnier over time, though not the least bit funny when you have that death grip on a small spruce.

Randy, you are one of the best story tellers I have ever heard...I love the Shop Stories.
Hunting stories (Good or bad, kill or no) are the best. Most of us follow you (in my opinion) because you are real, not about the shot, just about the love for outdoors.
