In episode 1 of this New Mexico elk hunt, Randy is joined by Ty Newman who won the Win A Hunt With Randy sweepstakes for 2020. Not only was he lucky enough to win that, he also was lucky enough to draw a coveted New Mexico elk tag that Randy has been putting in for for years!
Hoping the luck continues, they show up to the unit and put some boots on the ground to locate a bull for Ty. It doesn't take long to locate a bull, as several as bugling within earshot of camp! So they head out for some scouting.
The next morning they head up to a knob to glass and locate plenty of elk, and one really nice mature bull. The problem is getting within shooting range of one for Ty. Between an absurd amount of downfall and other hunters in the area, harvesting a bull isn't going to be exactly easy.

Oh man, I’ve hunted deer two times in this unit and the biggest problem I had was getting through all of the elk to get to them! It’s a special place for sure.
My brother and I drew this elk hunt last year. I recognize all the country, difinitly a cool/ and special place.

@@benbaber3975 Far north. Unfortunately lol. It's a love hate relationship for sure and not conducive to backpack style hunting. Extremely difficult to locate animals in this jungle.

Damn... That deadfall was terrible.. It would be hell to get out of there. Just imagine how tough it would be packing out Elk!

That's some good huntin' . Seeing game (shootable game) keeps the spirits high and the food tasting good. Need some Dilly Bars though.

Is Tyler the winner from the 2019 contest that had to postpone for a year or the 2020 winner? Awe that was so sweet and adorable for his kids to draw you something and sign it as a form of gratitude. It does seem that the winners pick New Mexico every time, but from what I hear and sometimes see I can understand why. What a double lucky guy, about to be triple lucky.

I walked 18 miles in 4 days. I need to get one. Prob take me a couple years to save with a new baby on the way. Love those things quiet and fast.

@@BrettMcNary Climbing a hill on a fourwheeler, or side by side in high, and not shifting to low properly- burning a belt- is the same reason they had a chain break. These motors have a ton of torque, and when rode improperly in a high gear, and putting 160 NM of torque(more torque than a compact car) those things can happen to ya. Carry an extra chain, like you do a belt, and all is well.

Just a little tip from a photographer... a tripod (and in this case, the spotting scope as well) is more stable if one extends the legs further and drops the centre post. Good luck!

Let's say you are shooting your favorite 308. What is your max kill range for a dead cross wind of 10 mph, 20 mph, etc? Looks like you guys have some serious wind to deal with so that's why I am curious. Thanks

Not required in New Mexico.
But don't you think you should wear at least a camo orange hat? I know I would be and it should be required.
New Mexico must not have a safety orange regulation?
It does but only on certain hunts like youth phesant and the valles caldera hunts.

as i got older you cant eat the horns.
I'm young yet, and still havent found them tasty, but nothing like a big 6x6 rack.
Plus cow/doe tags sometimes let you hunt pretty often in the places that you might have to wait 25 years for.
