  • ** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
    Apparently 100,000 people every day are playing the new Queens game on LinkedIn! It's a puzzle created by Cracking The Cryptic's old friend Thomas Snyder (3x World Sudoku Champion, 1x World Puzzle Champion) and very enjoyable it is too!
    It's based off the logic puzzle Starbattle but where only one queen (star) needs to be placed into every row, column and region. The puzzles get harder through the week (with Monday being the easiest and Sunday the hardest).... so yesterday Simon thought he'd show you some of the strategies he uses vs the hardest puzzles.
    Play the puzzle at the link below:
    / queens
    The exact puzzle Simon plays in the video is no longer available on LinkedIn but you can play it in our software at the following link:
    sudokupad.app/...
    (Use 1 for a Queen and 2 for an empty cell to make the solution check function work)
    Rules:
    Place exactly one queen in every row, column and coloured region. Two queens cannot touch each other. Not even diagonally.
    ** DECEMBER'S COMPETITION JUST LAUNCHED **
    December's monthly reward on Patreon "Swipe Right" launched yesterday!
    Simon's solve of James Sinclair's Thank You Very Much has also just been released.
    Check it out for as little as $2/month here:

    I have been a little addicted to this puzzle so I created a solver that uses various rules to solve the puzzle. Worst case it uses brute force to solve the puzzle and I was looking for a challenge so I used the same one you did. Anyway I'm delighted to say that for this puzzle, it didn't need the "brute force" hint.

    I have been playing these puzzles for ages on my phone, but under a different name. It's called "Parks" and there have been several releases after the original: Parks Seasons, Parks Landscape, Parks Cantica (author is Andrea Sabbatini)
    The "plot" is that you have to plant a single tree in each park and that they don't bear to see each other (so one per row/column) and can't touch each other.
    The number of puzzles is finite though, and the difficulty is incremental. It is starting to get suitably nasty when you have to put not ONE but TWO trees in each park... 😉

      It's called queens because it's based on a famous puzzle (and often programming problem for interviews) about putting queens on a chess table, in a way that they don't threaten each other, which implies one in each row and each column.

    Why is it called Queens when it should be called Kings?

  • @craigyoung8008
    @craigyoung8008 2 месяца назад +11

    I have a *major* objection to this puzzle.
    The use of queens instead of kings seems nothing more than a viciously nasty Machiavellian ploy to mislead chess players with *zero* value to the puzzle itself.
    I restarted the puzzle twice thinking I’d made some careless mistake.
    Then when I reviewed the rules and noted it said queens don’t “touch” each other, it became apparent that the pieces were behaving like kings, not queens.
    Chess players are likely to be particularly prone to the misdirection, because most will be familiar with the 8 queens challenge, which this 9 queens puzzle falsely alludes to.

    • @JS...
      @JS... 2 месяца назад +2

      Wouldn't rooks be the most apt piece? Kings don't see far enough (whole row/column). Regions add another wrinkle for the plain chess analogy.

    • @JS...
      @JS... 2 месяца назад +2

      @@Cartilog-z4f True, it's a combination of king and rook then, with region check.

    • @craigyoung8008
      @craigyoung8008 2 месяца назад +4

      @@JS... I’d say the rook moves are covered by “place one in each row and column”.
      So the king can cover touch by king-move.
      Of course what to place could be anything: star, circle, x
      It’s just that the queen in particular is misleading, and detracts away from being a logic puzzle towards a “trick-you” puzzle.
