    "Groove Tool" is the ION/Numark rebranding of the Chuo Denshi MG-09D cartridge. It was originally made by Sanyo in the 1980s. In fact I believe the infamous CZ-800 ceramic cartridge was also based on a Sanyo design.

    • @ccadam
      @ccadam Год назад

      You're probably right about the Chuo Denshi's being originally made by Sanyo, unless Chuo Denshi were and still are suppliers of OEM cartridges for Sanyo and other brands. Nagaoka were OEM suppliers for Technics/Panasonic and those were branded Technics/Panasonic.

      Wow I did not know that I love to learn info about these types of cartridges so the the chuo Denshi ceramic cart and the groove tool mag cart are related that is fascinating I really always wanted to know who made them thank you !!!!!!!JRo

    I picked up this exact same turntable for $25 on craigslist from an awesome older gentleman who lectured me on jazz for almost an hour, and obviously took care of it as its in amazing shape. I have to say I really enjoy it. I upgraded the cartridge to a Audio Technicia VM 95C added a cork mat, and i cannot find fault with it other than the plastic platter. Well worth it if you come across it.

    • @luisalonsogonzalezgarcia4365
      @luisalonsogonzalezgarcia4365 Год назад +1

      @@purplellama9708 You can't from the turntable itself! It has to be from your sound system.
      The turntable has a preamp included so that means you don't need an external one! Just make sure you have selected on the back of the turntable the "phono" Mode and then plug it normally to your sound system which has to be either a pair of powered speakers or an mini HiFi chain for example and you'll be good to rock

    The Gain Knob is for when you have it hooked to a PC through USB and recording using software i.e. Audacity it adjust the gain output for the recording level.

    I had an ION TT over 10 years ago and I used it to digitize albums. It was a slightly different model. The input was for digitizing other audio sources, I connected the op of a cassette deck to it for example, and the gain was for op audio level of the USB.

    This is actually the same turntable I own! I bought it on flea-bay a little over 6 months ago, complete with original paperwork, USB Cable, Audacity CD along with the original box and have loved it ever since.
    It was a monstrous upgrade from something I'd say is even worse than the standard suitcase player: an all in one stereo from the late 80s, same cartridge as a suitcase player but with a plastic tone arm. Not great.
    Some pros and cons:
    Cons: Even though it has + and - on the hole on the bottom, there's no speed adjustment under it, at least on mine. I had to take mine apart and flip over the circuit board to adjust the speed.
    When turning on the power switch the turntable makes a loud pop sound, I remedied this by plugging it in one of the outlets on the back of my pioneer stereo, when the stereo turns on, so does the turntable. The stereo mutes any output for the first 5 or so seconds after powering on, so it fixes the pop issue for me. Depending on the setup this can be a bigger problem for some than others.
    Not the biggest fan of the hard wired cables but not the end of the world.
    Feels a bit plastic-y.
    Pro's: Adjustable counterweight, Anti-skate, 12 inch platter, Metal tonearm, Manual operation (could be a con for some), Magnetic Cartridge, Standard head shell mount, looks pretty good too. Pretty much anything you'd want out of a decent turntable.
    Upgradeable!! You can turn off the built in preamp (great for older stereos with their own preamps) as well as being able to change the cartridge and head shell. This should last a long while until you're ready to upgrade, and I can see a lot of people not feeling the need to upgrade from this.
    SPECTACULAR sound quality ESPECIALLY for the $30 bucks I paid for it, look around enough and you can get it for even cheaper. Sounds even better than in the video with a new stylus. This is what I would consider budget but it sure doesn't sound like it, and It really doesn't get much better than this at this price point. This may not be an audiophile grade turntable but I have a couple albums that are hailed by "audiophiles" for their sound quality, Namely the Bernie Grundman cut, Pallas pressing of Nirvana's Nevermind. I've never heard that album sound better.
    After over 6 months of ownership, I couldn't recommend it enough, especially for someone new to collecting, or getting back into it. If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

    Thanks for the video. I am from Malaysia and I bought a old stock Soundstage TT2 turntable, that looks exactly like the ION with the only difference; it has the pitch control, no USB. Since it was cheap and the build was quite good, I was willingly to made the changes, first I took out the preamp board, replace the RCA cable with good RCA connectors, so that I can use a better RCA audio cable connected to an external preamp. No earth wire, so I added one, also connected to the preamp. Use Bitumen on the underside of the platter to damp and add weight to it. Change the headshell and cartridge with Audio Technica, spherical stylus. Also change/upgrade the turntable feet, belt and placed it on a thick solid wooden kitchen chopping board...And it work out pretty good (I like DIY). Until your video, I search high and low trying to find out the country of manufacture, which was not labelled on my TT. Thanks to your video, I now know that it was from Malaysia. Hahaha.

      LOL! This reminds me of an old joke. A tour guide at the Smithsonian shows the tour group an antique hatchet, saying, "And here we have the hatchet used by George Washington when he infamously cut down his neighbour's cherry tree. It's very close to the original; over the centuries, the wooden handle only had to be replaced three times, and the head was replaced only two times."😂

    I spotted this exact same ION TTUSB10 turntable today at my local Value Village for $19.99 and it seemed to be in great shape, but the plastic platter was a turnoff and I forgot that the red cartridge was actually a magnetic cartridge and not a ceramic cartridge, although I liked the fact that the whole headshell could be removed and replaced with a better headshell, cartridge, and stylus if one desired.
    Frankly, I didn't need to buy yet another turntable since I have some great models and makes already, so I passed on the unit and then I spotted an older gentleman scooping it up, so I helped him do some basic testing of the unit (the cueing lever did not seem to raise the lift shelf). I also gave him a few tips for turntable setup which he appreciated. We immediately hit it off talking about records, turntables, laserdiscs, the Beta vs. VHS war, music and movies, etc, so it's always great when one can establish a rapport with a fellow customer or collector and have interesting conversations. :)

    I have a TTUSB10, which I have loaned out while I work on people's regular tts.
    These dudes are used to high quality vintage tts.
    Invariably the feedback I get it the same, "there is nothing wrong with that tt."
    I consider that to be quite a compliment.
    It's obviously a lot of plastic, but it also has a lot of good features.
    I have bought and sold lower end ion and I believe that they are generally trash.
    But this model, after recommendations from a bunch of dudes, I'm gonna spin it for a few days and see what I think.
    Definitely worth mentioning that I have an excellent cartridge on the headshell.
    The Audio-technica AT-12s, with a new stylus.

    The Ion TTUSB line is a rebrand of the Numark TTUSB model, which I currently have. The GT cartridge is good, but the stylus (generally) is only found through Guitar Center’s website, and is sometimes sold out for months at a time. Replacement belts are still available, I got mine from Amazon. The only thing lacking on Ion TTUSB10 is the pitch control.

    • @ed6213
      @ed6213 Год назад

      @Lee: I think your model might be the iTTUSB (not the TTUSB10). I have the similar original model TTUSB (not the iTTUSB, so no iPod dock). Mine also has no lid, but it has the blank area next to the tone-arm, and has the extra start-stop switch in the back-left corner (as well as the one in the front-left corner). There is no pitch control, and no lift lever. Not sure why they bothered to add the extra start-stop button; it is more convenient to use the one closer to the front.

  • @kevinpatrickmacnutt
    @kevinpatrickmacnutt Год назад +2

    I paid $7 for a very beat up one, I thought it was garbage. The tone arm is the wrong shape (not a conventional shaped "S") as the cart has to be mounted at an angle to allign properly. It sounded fine at first, however the cueing lever broke off then gimbel later came out of the table completely.
    I stuck the Groove Tool on my BIC SP85, the headshell is on my Technics SL-B5, the dust cover sits on my Technics SL-1500 until I find a proper one. Not a loss since it did become a donor of sorts.
    The gain is for the USB (which had an audible hum on mine) and the anti skate did nothing. Maybe broken, maybe a weak spring.

      By contrast the antiskate on my Numark TTUSB was WAY too strong! So much so, it wasn't even remotely usable. Backwards skipped on nearly everything it touched for as long AS was set. 😬 Only briefly used it after a cartridge upgrade, and realized the darn thing worked fine after all with antiskate set to ZERO.

    I wouldn't be too much upset with plastic platters as such.
    My vintage behemoth has a platter of MDF (duh....), merely five millimeters thick. As lightweight as it gets. And yet somehow it works fine (surely assisted by a massive rotor hub below it).
    And then some cool vintage rigs had no platter at all, just five or six finger-like prodruding pods.

    I judge record players' ages the same way auto enthusiasts judge the ages of cars. 20 years used to be Antique, but that has changed to 40 years, because autos have become both safer and more reliable. Vintage has gone from 10 years to 15.
    So I consider a record player to be Vintage at 15, and to be Antique at 40. Again, most record players have become more reliable over the years. However, you could also make a safe bet for halving both of those numbers (Vintage at 7.5 years and Antique at 20 years), and I doubt anyone would argue with that decision.
