Attempting the World’s First Cu Mai Axe for the

- This was supposed to be my entry for the #ytchopperchallenge, however, as you'll see, things didn't go to plan.
Lessons have been learned the hard way, but I'm going to have to totally change tactics now as I'm short of time and funds...

I applaud your continued adventures in the world of Cu Mai blade making. Never expected to see a video where the end product was a failure, but on the other hand, it's very on brand for you to not just show the successes, but your failures. It sucks that this did not work out, but as you have admitted, it's a learning process. You've just found one more way in which not to make a Cu Mai Axe. Hopefully one day you'll have your own Edison moment where you succeed and can report "well I found X amount of ways how not to do it".
Also fun to see a video that happens around another one with your Press.

Bummer bro! I’m sure you already went through the shoulda, woulda phase. I would have went with a simple lower carbon core steel, normalized while it was still a billet and that would have made machining easier then austenize and quench the edge only as that could alleviate any possible delamination catastrophes in the quench. No doubt a challenging build!
My first attempt at a huge Cu Mai chopper went drastically wrong. I went with a mono steel for my final lol. Good luck on your next try.
bit late but a thought for you, maybe worth forging out the basic axe from the center billet first and then shape the layers to suit before forging it all into one piece? Great idea and great attempt at something very different anyway

Just a thought, what if you did a wrapped eye and did the cumi between the wrap? Don't know, but just a thought.

Can Cu Mai be made with non flat stock? My thoughts were to make a thin axe head, and when all the difficult forging done the other layers are added. But I know nothing about forging - maybe it can't be done, and even if it can be, the shape of the head to get a nice Cu Mai pattern might be bonkers. Don't mind me, I'm just rambling.
Again, I'm really sorry for your loss, so to speak, and I'm looking forward to see what you do next!

Great video. Sorry that it failed. Perhaps if you drilled or ground the steel like the knife, the copper might melt into the gaps and hold together a little better, What do you think?

Applause for sticking with it to the end, even though the end sucked. You obviously gave this project a lot of thought before starting, and I expect you will continue thinking about it even when you don't want to. Looking forward to the next chapter of this journey into terminal frustration!

Man, so much food for thought on this video. Would a wrapped eye be a better option? Perhaps only using high carbon on the blade and keeping the rest of the axe cool while you heat treat that. I hope you take another crack at it when you've recovered from the hit to your wallet and your sanity.
BUT, what I can't understand is why you haven't drawn teeth on your metal shears. tut tut
You need a hug. Submit form 22-3-d and file it with my dog. He's good at hugs and loves eating paperwork.
Refreshing to see people who don't fear to fail and have the courage to show. Don't get me wrong, I do feel bad for you but this trade is about failing and learning from it. Btw I used to fear cu mai heat treatment as well, build yourself a treatment oven! It is not that hard.
