- From "Knowledge Bolide Crew Member" Ron Metchis: Presenting "An Odessa Odyssey"...a journey from ruster to eye-popper.
Here is how I took a moderately rusty Odessa Iron meteorite to showroom status. I show every step of the de-rusting and restoration process using electrolysis and etching with ferric chloride. I hope you enjoy the final results. I think this is some of my best work to date. -Ron

Excellent results! I just started my meteorite collection as of yesterday.
In looking at my specimen (gifted to me) the etching is poor quality, so I intend to resurface it and etch it myself, so I'm glad to have found this informative video.
Cheers.
Fantastic news! Welcome to the hobby. Look at my videos on RUclips for one's related to salvaging iron slices.
I can't find iron wire on ebay or Amazon. I got everything else for electrolysis except iron wire. I have 180 gram campo slice I plan on trying this process with. It's my first time.
Look for Nickel wire on Amazon or eBay. Stainless steel is 50% iron so that should work for you. Do not use galvanized steel because of the extra Zinc.
Very nice 👍🤔
Cosmic art. Thanks for watching & subscribing! It helps!
Wonderful I love it !
Please can you indicate the quantity of the liquid you applied ? It’s just Ferric chlorid ?
Yes, it is ferric chloride 5% by volume.
@@TopherspinMeteoritesbonjour, très intéressant merci😊 avec quelle produit est diluer le chlorure ferrique ?
What a beautiful expert job!
It is an art and a science. He makes it look easy. But, WOW!!!!
Hi ❤️❤️😭🙋🏿♂️🌹🌹🌹
Thanks
Wow. What a difference in the before and after treatment. Well done Ron.
Night & Day!! I am sending over 30-pounds of Iron slices and end cuts off to get treated and etched. (see you in 4-6 months) I can only hope for the same great results.
Hi thanks for the video, very informative. I etched my first piece yesterday per your instructions on this video. I wanted to ask about the graphite plates. What size are you using and where can I pick some up? Thanks.
Wonderful! I hope your first etching project works out well. It's super exciting to hear people trying new things based on the knowledge they gain from my channel.
The plates measure 4” x 8”. You can get them on Amazon.
@topherspin Yes, my first etching job worked out well, thank you. It was like a scavenger hunt sourcing all the items needed for the etching and electrolysis setup. I went ahead and used two steel plates 12"x4"x1/4"for the anode and a piece of rebar 3/8"x 18" for the cathode. Arm and hammer sodium carbonate and distilled water for the electrolyte. And a car battery charger for power supply. It's bubbling as we speak. I will be upgrading to the graphite plates just as soon as I can order them. Thanks for the videos and letting us know when you are trying something new in the process.
Note: (Correction) I said I used sodium carbonate, in the electrolysis tank, but I actually used Arm & Hammer potassium carbonate. Just want to clear that up.
I ordered the graphite plates a couple of hours ago. They should arrive tomorrow. Thanks again for the info.
Oh wait, I had it right the first time it is Sodium carbonate. Sorry😊
What an informative and pro quality video Ron. I collect mostly irons so your videos are like gold to me. What an amazing result on one of my favourite irons Odessa. My problem right now is that I live in a 750 square foot apartment and am apprehensive of spraying the clear coat. Maybe I’ll do that in the alleyway.
I agree - great educational video with extreme results!!! Ask Ron if you need to set up the RE in a well ventilated area.
Way cool, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching! Ron should be very proud of the work and the result!
