    Here's the gear I use:
First, the VPN I use on my PC and on the VMs (especially when I'm downloading): teksyndicate.c...
    Router running DDWRT: www.amazon.com...
NAS Units (you really only need one)
    NAS 1: Synology 4 bay: www.amazon.com...
2.5 GB Ethernet Adapter for the Synology: www.amazon.com...
    Drivers for Synology: github.com/bb-...
    NAS 2: Asustor AS6604T: www.amazon.com...
    Switches:
Asustor 2.5 GB Switch (I have a couple of these): www.amazon.com...
    TP-Link 24 port switch: www.amazon.com...
    TP-Link 8 port switch: www.amazon.com...
    TP-Link 5 port switch: www.amazon.com...
    Tiny PC for VMs: shop.udoo.org/...
It's a bit expensive, and it was sent to me for review a long while ago. I would probably just use a small dell with a 4770k for VMs if I didn't have this.
Raspberry Pi works fine, but it's so expensive now. You can run pihole on this instead: www.amazon.com...
As for media software, I use jellyfin and foobar. Let's talk about it.
You can install Jellyfin right on your nas, in whatever package manager you're using. Otherwise, you can get servers and clients here:
    jellyfin.org/
If you want to use jellyfin for music as well, there's an amazing app for mobile called, finamp.
    github.com/jms...
You can tell it which libraries are music/audio/audio books, etc. and it will just werk.... with most file types. I use foobar just because I have loads of video game music that uses different file formats (discussed in the video). For that, foobar and some plugins are needed.
    Foobar

I'm a big proponent of downsizing your homelab. I went from running a beast of an enterprise server to running 2x Zimaboards. Great to see such an efficient setup!

+1 for Synology's SHR2. I've used ZFS a lot at home and in enterprise settings over the years and the lack of..."post-configuration flexibility" has been problematic. Yes, they are working on that, but much of the ZFS code base is showing its age as it wasn't designed with all flash in mind. It was always meant to be a stopgap until something better came along (but then Java was never meant for critical systems and is now everywhere in FinTech, great job Oracle). Then Oracle started selling ZFS as the last file system you'll ever need, but Oracle tends to exaggerate and bend the truth.

I used to make the same claims, "do I need all this?", now turns out I need 16tb just for my retro game collection, I have 4tb for my plex, I have 1tb for my documents. Now, 2 of my 3 kids have their own PCs, plus school laptops. My wife has her own PC and Macbook Pro. All of these need to have backups. Honestly, my home network needs revamping. I appreciate the effort to "simplify" things though!

Wow …. Massive streamline job on your home tech setup 🤩🤯😇. Streamlining is always a good thing …. Regardless of whether it’s for work, life, home etc 🥰👍. Wish I could get gigabit internet. Currently running 100 d/l and 40 u/l here in Australia 🇦🇺 . Internet is quite expensive here and once you go above my speeds …. The dollar AUD value increase exponentially 🤯🤯!

I moved into the city and have 3 choices for gigabit here... Plus Comcast gig but that's not fiber. I don't think I want to live outside a downtown area again. It's just too good... But outside of the city the situation here is similar to yours.

Had a Drobo when the power went out it was a pain to get it to recover, also the western digital wasnt bad, but limited. used a Synology 5 bay great unit, very versatile software and hardware.
all sorts of drives, ssd, standard, all different sizes.
Synology was a remarkable unit, I had 1512 one of there earlier models. Dual ethernet bridgable,
lots of extenal ports for ext drives or usb sticks.

  • @ryanvox1

I went from Synology to Freenas and upgraded to Truenas. I really liked the simplicity of Synology but i had a problem with their stuff that i couldn't go back to it. The enclosure died. Not the hard drives, but the actual enclosure. My device was out of warranty so i bought another one. Popped my drives in and it wouldn't recognize my drives. I had to reformat and reset everything back up. I called Synology and they said you can't swap drives from one device to another. Their encryption doesn't allow it. It ties it to that specific device. I did some research and found that you can unlock the encryption using Ubuntu. I gave that a shot and was never able to get it to work. So because their device died i lost all my data. Anyone using Synology make sure you have two or some other type of backup option. I ended up having two old PCs i turned into Freenas/Truenas "servers". One is my main and one is a backup just in case lol

good tip for 2 pihole but also 2 nas - stuff breaks - add a sniffer box and do pkt cap with moloch - also think about cluster nodes and netfs - nvme scales well - you may be able to use bridging/bonding and upgrade to 5g on most devices

I'd like to do a setup like this, but my house isn't wired for ethernet and I don't even have space for a "network shelf". I'd basically have to clear truckloads of junk out of the basement, get the house wired for ethernet going to the basement as a source, and put a rack or shelf in the basement. That's the dream though. For now, everything has to live on my desk. I'd like to get an Asustor NAS and move everything over to that so I could reinitialize my Synology one without losing data and use it as a backup server, but the other thing is kind of a prerequisite for that as I don't have room for two NAS's on my desk.

I go into small businesses and have to setup and/or replace network hardware. It is out of the scope of my work to clean things up (things are always a mess) and it risks stopping things working... but I always try to leave things better than I found them. A little bit of velcro tape here and there, can make a significant improvement on the appearance and can make future changes easier... for a small amount of effort.

Actually, you can completely circumvent windows from forcibly making you use an online account when you first boot into it but I still hate windows 11 due to all the pfisherprice nonsensical shit they did to it, specifically to the damn start menu and making it less customizable.
In regards to their online account crap, it works similarly to the way HP'S startup software install worked for windows 11 which when it showed the only interactive button available onscreen, I just went into task manager and killed the process and started the explorer manually via starting it as a new process if it didn't automatically start.

My DROBO Sucked. The file shares constantly dropped off. I am interrested in how much electricity my system draws more and more instead of how big it can be. I used an old gaming pc for a UNRAID server. I moved all my drives from the DROBO into the unraid server. I LOST all my files on DROBO because the hardware failed and I am not going to buy a new piece of crap to restore files I can download again. The 8 core CPU on my UNRAID cannot keep up with the files sucked down on my fiber. I also schedule and turn it off at night, because I don't need to pay for electricity for something that is not needed. Minimalism is the near future for some of us nerds. Like, I have an RTX 2080 TI. It plays my BF5 just fine. I will be turning down graphics settings instead of blowing 1500 on a new card, and the the trickle down of MB memory and power supply. For what? a few FPS? I can enjoyably play on lower FPS.
