DOD250 Overdrive/Preamp (vs & DOD308 & Fender YJM)

- Today I'm taking a look at the recently reissued classic overdrive pedal by DOD, the 250 Overdrive/Preamp. This pedal has been used by many, including most notably by Yngwie J Malmsteen. So if you want that classic Yngwie tone, then that's probably the pedal to get. I'll also be comparing it to the DOD308 and the Fender Yngwie Malmsteen overdrive, which he's used in later years.
Hope you enjoy!

I bought the RI DOD 250 and run it in front of my SC20H and oh boy! It sounds perfect!! It’s so dynamic and tones for days.
I currently have the YJM308 but it's in bad shape after all these years so I'm going to pick up to the DOD250. The coolest thing I notice with the 308 is the way bends sing. There's enough fuzz in the circuit to give some excellent overtones to the sounds. I imagine that's true with the 250 also
Hi, The early Malmsteen sound can also be done with a Boss OD1 or SD1 on a non-Plexi Marshall like the JMP/JCM 800 Master volume and a stratocaster equipped with Dimarzio FS1 or even with original Fender pickups (Malmsteen them used at the beginning before switching to the HS3, the FS1 are not humbucking but have a higher output level). Of course the DOD 250 is what he has always used knowing that there was not a big choice at the time to boost a Marshall and that the Tube Screamers color too much in the mids.
I always preferred the Malmsteen sound from the Alcatrazz period until the Marching out album, clearer, more precise and articulate... very typical Stratocaster and more "Blackmore" than the sound he has had since the second part of the 80's until now .
The DOD250 and other Yngwie pedals are a bit fuzzier than the SD1. I notice it most on bends and on big chords
The DOD sounds great. It's always baffled me that DOD withheld rereleasing it while other companies were making variants of the circuit to fill demand in the market. I've had the YJM308 since it first came out and that pedal is beat up pretty good that point. $99 is not a bad price for the Yngwie tone.
Love these gear videos. I could only buy 1 high end drive pedal and these vids help a lot, in the end I bought a Strymon Riverside a year ago.
Glad you like them!
My favorite equipment review channel!!!
Thank you 😊
Thanks for the review Elmo 🙏✌️❤️
My pleasure!
A excellent demo. THANX
I have notices a rule of thumb for some time. A lot more gain means a lot more overtones which one would think the extra richness would be great. It is, but the whole sound becomes top heavy which makes the lows in proportion smaller. The end result is it thins the sound. I find that using a good graphic EQ changes everything. You can make the 250 massive sounding. It has enough gain, it just needs fattening up.
Huge fan of the DOD250. I think I have around 20 or so variants of this pedal, some pretty obscure, some modded, but they all do the magic. The only variant that I don't actually have is the old grey box version. Back in the day the DOD workers would pull components from old IBM cards to populate the boards, hence the wide variance in tonality between them all. I even have a couple of home made versions, it's a simple circuit. Very nice demo. The newer ones tend to be a bit microphonic, you can tap on them and hear it through the amp. One that I have found found to be very good is actually from Hong Kong, just branded as 'Overdrive Preamp'. Allows you to switch between germanium and silicon, and between the 250 and 308 circuits. The JHS pedal is also very good indeed.
2:45 made me think of the "N.N. shreds" videos. Remember those? They were great!
That DOD was my first drive. It was a hand me down from my dad maybe 1988? Also a DOD sterio chorus
Too late to mention this, but i found that the stock YJM308 with all knobs on 10 bleeds some noise into the signal when bypassed. It's very noticeable on a clean channel. I assume all 3 pedals were in series, so this would have affected the tones of the DOD and Fender.
The 250 and 308 sounds great, with the 250 sounding a little more bassy, and the 308 sounding a little more open, with a harsher sound. The fender sounds nice but not as good as the dods.
DoD 250 is a fantastic sounding pedal to my ear. Just buy what you prefer or buy them all 😂
At the moment enjoying ProCo RAT re-issue and Ibanez 850 overdrive (which is a 70's BigMuff copy) re-issue (yes a re-issue of a copy of a Fuzz with the text "overdrive" on it). It does not get more rock 'n roll 😂
If you like confusion then guitar is perfect 😅 (for me at least).
I liked the 308 best but I doubt I could pick them out of a line up. Very similar at least via cheap headphones.
Another YJM fan... I just subscribed.
Have you tried stacking the DOD 250 into the fender YJM drive? How does that sound?
Was it “it’s beddy-bye night night, I need cuddles!” Time again bro?!?! Hahaha! Thanks for demoing those without the noise gate, it’s good to hear what your actually getting without any processing! Good job! How do you feel about the Seymour’s vs the dimarzios that he used to use?
I like the Seymours a bit more.
I got the Fender pedal, I love it with a Plexi or on my Yamaha THR. Unfortunately I still stink at this style of music, but it’s still fun to try.
MUST HAVE THE YNGWIE TONE! (played at 2/3 speed. lol)
The fender matches well those pick ups , cuts bass
I'm seriously considering buying the JHS preamp overdrive and boosting it with a sd1. Do you think that's a good combination?
Probably
I like the reissue dod 250 but honestly love the dod 308 best!
The yjm308 is often supposed to have more low end roll off, not that obvious...
2:48 a little bit of Kirk Hammet stuff 👍👍
Haha 🤣
Those pick ups with the 250... sounds fuzzy to me
Cool
Dod 250 for me is better. Dod 250 have much more bass. This reissue pedal remember yngwie live sounds around 1985 in the Live in Japan.
Yngwie plays very clean but his amp stands very loud!
The volume Yngwie plays, it is devestating.
Yngwie says his guitars are really stable for tuning. This one very much is not stable in tuning. This should be another episode!
Elmo can you do a video on YJM's supposed secrets to keeping a 6-screw Strat bridge in tune with heavy bar use? He's mentioned that a number of times in videos and articles.
the yellow/gold dod sounded bsst
Hahaha you like the digital overdrive the most. Srymon

Proof that all the equipment in the world won't compensate for tone in the hands.
Nope... To much hankey panky on guitar
The fender is superior
