Math, thank you for giving us a look at this most unique and beautiful camera. If I bought one, I would definitely use it, and I would not worry about scratches. That's what Leica cameras are for - to be used! Cameras are disposable. It's the images that require protection.
I would add one note about loading the film - after you load the film and close the door, and then wind the film, watch the film rewind knob to ensure it moves when you wind the film. That way, you will know that the film was properly loaded.
Thanks for the video Matt. The camera lens combo is gorgeous indeed. I would imagine by the time I watched this all 250 are spoken for. I've the quick load on my M4 chrome. lovely cameras and my M4 is still a weekly shooter for me. Cheers from Ireland. Great content.
Congratulations! Very beautiful collector camera I’m very impressed that you will carefully use it rather than just keeping it boxed until it’s inevitably sold some day Hope you get much enjoyment from this purchase
Congratulations on your titanium Leica. My first titanium camera was a Nikon F2. My second was a Contax G1. My third was a Leica M6 Classic. I love the way titanium cameras handle wear and tear.
I have totally forgotten the way I used to load my film in the dark with my M6. Without a light meter, this camera, if it ever get used, is for the old school photographers only. I wonder if its shutter button is also made of titanium as that is typically one of the weak points in the M cameras. As for the lens, I wonder how much lighter it is compared to the original 50 mm Summilux ASPH with the same barrel design (red letters)? Is its barrel made of aluminum coated with titanium like many of the other vintage lenses?
Leica M lenses enjoyed exactly this style of reversible lens hood and cap through the 1980s. Many living Leica enthusiasts have never forgotten this simple design solution. Teach your staff their history.
I couldn't have opened the box and loaded the film if it were mine. I'd just tuck it away in a safe deposit box. However, now my 45 year old Nikkormat FTn cameras are all analogue too, especially since the light meters are questionable. The mechanisms other than light meter still work. I love all analogue. Nice purchase. I appreciate your honoring Leica like this.
Cameras are disposable. Don't get me wrong - a Leica camera is second-to-none. But it's the images that need to be protected, not the camera. Leica makes cameras to be used, not just admired.
My M6 TTL is a 2001 Titan, one of a 1000 camera run. Titanium plated rather than solid. Buffalo leather covering too. ☺️ I’ve run a lot of film through it so the collectors won’t be much interested, but it’s a fine tool for doing photography. Also…lotsa Leitz lens hoods and caps from the 1960s & ‘70s do the reversible thing. It’s something Leica moved away from later on.
I’ve just looked the model up on eBay, you lucky devil… great that you’re using it as the gods of Leica intended. For me that’s a better camera with the very useful inbuilt meter.
Tried to get one from my leica dealer in beijing, but i was number 4 on the waiting list and of course neither, 1 or 2, jump off the deal, so i was left empty handed. still thinking about getting it, though it went already 50% up in value here. its really tempting! also the 50APO must be the lens which was turned into limited editions the most already, i think no other leica lens was more "limitededed" than the 50APO
Leica R series lenses made in Wetzlar for 35 and 50 mm have exactly the same lens cap design, so nothing new for those of us who have been Leica shooters for many years. This Titan version was born to make photos, but sadly it will be boxed, resold and traded, never to reach it’s innate potential. Oscar Barnack must be turning in his grave, after seeing that his creation would never see the light, but remain boxed for life and traded as an investment.
@@mathphotographer Good for you, enjoy it. I have seen one on eBay already for over 2x original price. Though.. you may want to start saving again and have a talk with your contact as Fall approaches..
I have an ordinary all-black M-A which is also a very beautiful camera. Having used my M-A for a week or so now, I have one major/minor gripe: the camera - unlike the original M3 - doesn't have a self-timer! I don't understand why Leica didn't include a self-timer with the M-A. A self-timer would be so useful. I'll throw in the fact that I haven't been able to "register" my new M-A with Leica. It's as if the Leica website doesn't recognize the new, all-black M-A. That's very frustrating.
The olden days. People didn’t focus on their cell phones as they were walking. It was a different world. Buying film, print film, slide film. Loading, metering. Sending the film to a lab. Leica was always the pinnacle of craftsmanship. Thanks for showing this. Don’t think their are any in the US stores.
It is a fine camera, indeed. And slowing down the process from taking a picture to finally having it in hand is a good thing from time to time. In my daily workflow this would be too long but doing it from time to time and truly enjoying it is just a great experience.
How did you get one of these cameras? It appears they were sold out on launch. Honestly the camera is depressing to me, because it was my ideal camera, and I had the money, but it looks like I have to spend $100k on Leica stuff before the company would invite me buy something like that.
This is where one needs a good relationship with their Leica dealer. Of course there will be many in the queue who will ask to be notified first of any new editions. But not everyone buys every type. Still, the chances of us average folks will be down in the queue.
You will take just as good, if not better photographs with a Nikon F100 and a Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 AF-D lens. That will cost you 500 bucks. Don't fall into this rabbit hole. It's just hype and myth.
@@stuartwalker121 “Just as good” pictures with a Nikkor 50mm f1.4? Well, that’s very debatable, and I say that as a long-time Nikon user who still has exactly that lens in a cupboard nearby. It’s a nice lens, but it’s not an apochromat, and it’s computed to work on a camera with a flipping mirror between the lens rear element and the film plane. The Nikkor has a speed advantage, but that’s about it. At the same aperture, with both cameras on tripods and loaded with Tri-X, developed in HC-110 (my favourite), D76 or dilute Rodinal, my money would be on the Leica to do better corner to corner sharpness any day, assuming they’re printed through the same enlarger. Mind you, you’d probably need a magnifier to see the difference. But on the street, in real life… I’d still expect the Leica to do better, because rangefinder cameras _really are better_ at taking pictures of people. Not necessarily Leicas - for years I had a Nikon S3 that had a fairly crappy lens with loads of spherical aberration - but that thing about viewing directly with a RF viewfinder turns out to be true. You get more involvement with your human subjects and somehow that makes a difference. Mat, you lucky fellow, enjoy your new camera and keep it in good condition - but do take some pictures with it too. Preferably with Tri-X.
Use it a bit so when it’s time to sell, you’ll be confident it works properly. I’ve read more than one horror story of quality control issues with Leica film (ma and mp) cameras, regrettably.

@@mathphotographer I have to be honest… I think Leica’s look better used. Unlike DSLR’s/Mirrorless cameras which look awful, the Leica’s get better with use marks. Didn’t Leica sell a new camera that looked used a few years back? I remember loving the look.
