Thanks, basically how i go about cleaning now. "The chemist" such a helpful and great person. You are the pioneer bro. many of us following your footsteps. For the cause, for the records and the music "done right" ☕
I just got my chemicals yesterday! I got the Tergikleen and the others minus your antistatic chemical and, diluted as per instructions and wow! I just use a Zero Stat gun after the cleaning of both sides. Works better than anything I have done so far hands down and costs way less! Thanks Patrick!!!
Thanks for sharing this one Pat. Good to see that your machine is still cleaning away flawlessly after ten years. That is impressive. I also use a shaving brush at times on my records to brush off some surface dust. They are super soft. I have watched many record cleaning videos since the VC started ten years ago and I continue to enjoy them. Thank you for sharing your method. You did a fine job with it~ Rob/Boston
Great video Patrick. I am getting fantastic results with this regimen! I had liquinox recommended to me by another audiophile as a precleaner, so I already had it on hand. I could not find tergitol, so I am using tergikleen. I do 2 distilled rinses just to make sure all the chemicals are removed. I’m doing all this on my VPI 16.5 and then finish it off with the Zerostat. This is my new favorite combo of cleaning products. I also have a DIY Ultrasonic, but don’t use it much at all anymore.
Ha, I knew we’d find more common ground ! That was a fairly decent noise record you played in the demo part of the video! Not first league noise, kinda old school uk style, Zoviet France loops, but raw, without reverb and delay, still nice enough. I will buy if I find it in the wild, thanks for introducing me to Angel, always thought they were just another classic rock band, little did I know, humbled. 🧑🎓 maybe I’ll have to go amend their Discogs page, with that new perspective 👍
Great vid, I’m currently using a spin clean which works okay for dust and finger prints but doesn’t work so well for a deep cleaning I’m still noticing pops and static I’ve wanted to try an ultrasonic but might give this method a try first.
Tremendously helpful. As I've stated to others and likely on one of your live streams, I'm not new to vinyl (I grew up in the 70's) but pretty new to the VC and begun taking my vinyl (and specifically the caring for them) more seriously and this is a great vid in caring for mine. I presently just have a spin-clean and it does seem effective, but I love the vacuuming idea. Cheers Patrick. 🤘🎶🤘
Hi, Patrick, good video, i use a combo of items as well the ultrasonic is probably the best choice i have 3 ultrasonic cleaners Zenith Ultrasonics , Sonix 4, and a Sharper Tek all 3 are made in USA i use a custom built arm to sit next to the machines also have a VPI HW 17 as well as a steamer. the liquinox and alconox are lab/medical grade cleaners, the liquid is better than powder. you can get tergitol and triton from talas in new york I also use Everclear, the stuff you can drink, but don't as well as Sporicidin, dawn and distilled white vinegar in various formulas. for mold on jackets you can use UV light to kill spores You can also get your own deionizer tanks and resin from DI Rinse and save money as well that prevents spots used on cars etc i liked your input on Rachel's Ghost the other day. Have a great day my name is Rich (krwd)
great video, very informative. The Kirmuss edge drive mechanism added with the heat that the machine generates can cause edge warps, i use the same base unit but with an 8 disc carrier drive, and an individual record brush mechanism to fully clean the grit, i also changed the frequency, 35khz is too brutal for vinyl and the exploding bubbles dont get fully into the grooves. as soo as proto is working i will put it onto market in Australia as well as the U.S. I like your idea for removing the platter on the VPI. I also use tergitol or titan x-100 and quat product i import as an antistatic agent. ....enjoy the music
Trying again without a link 1) I have been using Perfect Vinyl Forever’s cleaning service and am very happy with it. The expense is offset by the time saved cleaning them myself. He also flattens warps. 2) Not touching the playing surface of the records would be my recommendation.
Great video of a very interesting topic, I have great decision anxiety about which way to go when it comes to record cleaning have been looking at ultrasonic, everybody talks so well about it, but I get the feeling that the old school vacuum system is still the best way to go. Cheers /Janne
Very interesting video, but I'm wondering, with all these chemicals what is it exactly you are cleaning off the surface of the record. Do you need all this to remove dust and fingerprints?
Hi Patrick, Thanks for the premium cleaning protocol. I have a business. Where would you order tergitol s7 from and is it better than tergikleen on Amazon?
Interesting Pat. I enjoyed watching. I don't use a RCM, I vacuum using a standard 1.5 hp wet/dry shop vac with the vinyl vac wand attachment on an old turntable. I also use two basins rather than spay and brush. One basin is to wash with my home brew solution and the other is to rinse. I vacuum after each basin. When do you use your ultrasonic? My thinking is that I will stay with what I have until I upgrade to an ultrasonic. Do you have to clean the same way and add the ultrasonic step or do you replace these steps with the ultrisonic? Or are you saying that the ultrasonic doesn't improve cleaning, thus you don't use it anymore? take care friend.
@@pbthal Very interesting Pat. That kind of confirms my suspicions about ultrasonics. I always felt my manual cleaning did a pretty darn good job. Great information!!!
Incredible video, Patrick! A year later, have you, or anyone you know, used the Hepastat 255 in the last step? My mind just worries since it’s defined as a hospital cleaner, and red in color (which will be diluted). Just don’t want my records to turn purple, or start smelling like a retirement home. 😂 Is there a common chemical between the Hepastat and no longer available cynastat?
I've been using Hepastat with this method (skip the tergikleen/ilfotol for new records) and find it REALLY cuts the static. It's a 1/256 dilution so there's not a lot in the rinse. I also add a plain distilled rinse before the Hepastat just to ensure the surfactant is rinsed. I've done A/Bs with and without it, without the Hepastat after playing the record it will be full of static, with the Hepastat the record will still be static free after playing. There will be a light film after drying, but you place it in a dish rack and by the time you clean your next record it's fully dry and you can't see any residue. I've noticed audible difference other than the static. I use a pro-ject vs-s2 alu so I didn't have to mod the unit like Patrick did. If you don't mix ilfotol, the tergikleen won't fully wet the record, there will be gaps of fluid on the record. I'm also still using the included Pro-ject fluid until it's gone then will try the liquinox.
Great, thanks for the Liquinox hnit! Been down a similar route with all different kinds of clearing methods. Now mainly using a "Squeaky Clean Vinyl MK-iii RCM " for most records and the ultrasonic relegated for the really bad thrifted things. Converting CDN to US I think the squeakyclean comes out to 125$us, it is 3d printed and you provide the wet vacuum and hand power as the platter is not motorized. if youtube allows links this should find the product page squeakycleanvinyl.com/products/squeakycleanvinyl-mk-iii
This is really great info. I scored some Cyastat from a guy on Audio Karma forums. However @The Vinyl Archivist I am unable to find a mix ratio for use of this as a finishing spray as shown in the video. Checked around the manufacturer's site and elsewhere. Do you have a recommendation based on your experience or any instruction you may have found? Cheers
@@pbthal I believe he is out of it by now though, so for sure, hard to acquire these days. Since my comment above, I have found the Reg Williamson article describing a 0.5% solution of Cyastat. Is this a ratio you have found to be effective for your final step?
Hi Patrick, how are you? I re-watched this video cause I recently upgraded or added to my ultra-sonic cleaning process with a Pro-Ject - VC-S2 Vacuum system, I got a question? Well maybe a couple LOL, Are you putting a surfactant in your first step(e.g. Triton-X, Tergitol S-7 or S-9 wetting agent) with the liquinox cleaner and deionized water? I'm guessing sense it's being vacuumed afterwards Deionized or distilled water is fine, whatever is cheaper, but the one benefit with deionized is there is no electricity left in the water which could cause some static, but I'm guessing lol. Thanks for any help with this, Take care Bro and cheers ✌
@@pbthal Patrick another question? I'm wondering or maybe Just curious wouldn't it be more beneficial to add some surfactant to the first step to decrease the surface tension and allow the Liquinox to get in and penetrate the grooves a little better? Hoping you can give me your thoughts on that first step process? Thanks Patrick..
So there’s no ultrasonic stage in your process. I had convinced myself, or my ears had convinced me that ultrasonic cleaning of records gave better results than the wet vacuum method. Interesting….
