    US Bank is the worst. I have been waiting for a paycheck from them for a month. This doesn’t sound quite legal, but I closed my account and my second job sent my last couple paychecks to the closed account…. US Bank then cleared those paychecks and are sending me cashier’s checks……. Makes no sense, why would they cash a check for someone who no longer has an account? Sounds phishy to me.
    This situation has caused me to fall behind on my rent and bills when they could’ve just rejected the checks and my work would have happily wrote me new ones immediately. They have no concern for current or former account holders.

    • @RJFinancial
      @RJFinancial  2 года назад

      I would have assumed USB would have rejected the payments and sent them back to the employer to deal with. Takes a few days but that's usually the process I'm familiar with. Sorry to hear it. If it makes it better, they got fined $37.5 million by the CFPB for opening accounts for customers without their knowledge.

    Hey RJ, You are right that it’s not a bad idea to be in the garden for a short period of time before applying for a U.S. Bank Credit Card. The garden season should probably be at least 6 months or even 1 year. I just got approved for the Cash+ card in November 2021 and when I applied for it I had no new credit cards open 6 months prior and only one new card opened in the previous 12 months. I also have had a checking account with U.S. Bank since May 2021. From some of the data points I have heard is that they may be more likely to approve people for credit cards if they have been an existing customer of the bank. It’s also not a bad idea to have a credit score of at least 700 when applying for one of their cards. I’ll be honest, I think the Altitude Reserve card is one of the best travel cards available and it is one I will consider if I decide to get a travel card. I also hope to get the Altitude Go card in the future for the 4% back on dining and if I get it I will probably use it to pay for my SiriusXM subscription for the $15 annual streaming credit.

    • @RJFinancial
      @RJFinancial  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for sharing so many data points. I did have a biz checking account when I got the triple cash. and hadn't applied for a new card in maybe 5-6 months so I can throw those in as additional data points.
      Reserve is a solid card. All the US Bank cards go under the radar because for some reason the bank doesn't seem interested in being a contender. It's still odd to me that they don't have a national footprint being the 5th largest bank. People in MI where I'm from have never heard of them as there's no presence.

    To my mind, it's a foregone conclusion that US Bank will end up making their points transferable. Specifically between their Altitude lineup. The reason I think so is that the Altitude GO and Altitude Connect were both launched 1. As Altitude cards. And 2. Using "Altitude Points" rather than simple cash back (as the Cash+ uses). If they were always intended to stay separate...why do that? Why not the US Bank "Eats" card for 4% cash back, instead of the Altitude GO with 4x Altitude Points? It just all lines up a little too well to not seem like a long term plan.
    Not making the cards able to share points right away makes sense too. Why offer up those initially higher signup bonuses and then turn around and have to give everyone fifty percent more when we all transfer them over to the Reserve? No. Put the cards out there...let the market for them saturate a little...give folks enough time to go ahead and take their cash back...THEN look at possibly combining points.
    The Altitude GO is a awesome card all on its own. For no money annually I get 4x on Dining, 2x on Streaming, 2x on Groceries, and 2x on Fuel. Then...just for funzies...they hand me $15 annually for putting my $6 monthly SiriusXM subscription on it (math, math, math...$16.44 cash back per year...nearly 3 months of free service or said another way nearly 23% cash back). All of that tied up with a no foreign transaction fee bow.
    The Altitude Reserve is also an awesome card on its own. Yes there's a $400 fee. But if you take even a single annual trip it's really only a $75 effective fee (after the travel credit). And while the travel bonuses and benefits are good...they aren't SO awesome on their own. But the card has two superpowers. 1. It makes ALL of our mobile wallet purchases worth 3x. And 2. it gives us a 50% bump in points when we book through their portal. So that means our mobile wallet purchases CAN be worth 4.5x...and what all can we buy with mobile wallets? A lot. Just considering the broad scope of that 3x/4.5x ability...if I had to choose a single card to carry...the Altitude Reserve might be the one I'd choose. Maybe.
    The Altitude Connect makes me shake my head though. I don't think it's "terrible" on its own But when you stand it up next to the GO and Reserve...it kinda is. $95 a year to get some hotel/car rental multipliers and 4x on fuel and "travel"? Really? Yes Global/TSA. Yes a $30 streaming credit. But even if you said that was a $55 value, it's still forty bucks vs. $75 effective fee for the Reserve that has a lot more upside. I think they should have left the Reserve as the travel card, and made the Connect a 4x Fuel and Grocery card. At that point an Altitude Trifecta would be viable even without point sharing.
    But, five will get you ten...it's coming. Wait for it...

    • @RJFinancial
      @RJFinancial  2 года назад +2

      This on it's own coulda been a video discussion... I appreciate the thought that went into this.
      The only hesitation I have is while US Bank is the 5th largest bank, they don't seem to act like it. Don't have a national footprint, burry the Reserve for no reason, and are sensitive to approving people. I think they're aware of the trifecta and how close they are. However don't seem to have much if any interest in competing.
      US Bank should by now be what Capital one is finally becoming. Maybe not lounges but the Venture X and savor cards are fantastic. Driven by balancing out transfer partners, points sharing and allowing for ease of use vs the chase and amex offerings. Yet US bank seems to ignore all of that....
      I want you to be right but they seem like Citi to me; so close to being great, yet don't seem to care enough to go that extra mile. I think we often forget that because we love cards, the masses don't Banks use these as things to cross sell to the average deposit account holder. I mention this because I don't think US Bank is looking to attract people like you and me. As much as I wish they would....

    • @michaelmclaughlin105
      @michaelmclaughlin105 2 года назад

      @@RJFinancial No real argument about any of that, and I think it would benefit us all if they did take those last steps towards the podium of greatness. It would just put that much more pressure on the industry to work harder for our attention. So even those without a single US Bank account might see some positive fallout from a big change like that. And I agree that Capitol One certainly is “coming of age”. Though it took them a minute to get to that point. So I kinda think that suggests that US Bank has time take those steps too. And maybe they aren’t as interested in competing in the same way. I certainly can’t see the future, but time will tell the story. Tell ya what…small wager. Give my prediction until the end of 2023. If US Bank hasn’t rolled out point sharing on some level by then…I’ll send you a gift card for a steakhouse and supper is on me. I got a secured card through them it was the platinum card but I got it like 2 weeks before they released the altitude connect and the cash plus as secured versions. Uggh. I am definitely going to retool around my cards some are secured cards maybe cancel them get my money back. The US bank secured card goes unsecured in 1 year or sooner between 9 months to a year. I applied for the Altitude Reserve when I had 4 hard pulls in the prior 12-18 months, still got approved. However, I've had a banking relationship with them for 20+ years. I think the banking relationship can overcome the "inquiry sensitive" part. They are somewhat of a mystery.
    ALSO - the Altitude Reserve lounge access is worded poorly on their site. It's not one year only, it's a "year-by-year" Priority Pass membership that resets each year with 4 lounge visits (self) and 4 guest visits.

    Just incase, I got the Altitude Connect card a few months ago, very happy with the card, sign-up bonus/stream credit/multipliers but you CANNOT get more than "one point" for airfare booked through the U.S. Bank Travel Portal, you can only get the 4X points through directly booking through airline companies themselves. It's crazy, makes no sense to me, they did give me the 4X from my airfare booking only because the wording is not super clear in the disclosures. I do like the card and benefits and as I thought this card should be metal I had LionCard in California make it a metal card.
