I came late to the party... This is basically the best sci-fi story I have ever watched on the screen! Like literally, it was so tense sometimes my heart beats so fast when watching this series because I really care about the characters and the universe they have created! To say that they are a genius is an understatement.
Late to this comment thread, but after completing a binge feeding of all 6 Seasons on Amazon, I’m plenty ready to take the flack for this; at the age of 72, and having endured most iterations of the entire Star Wars and Trek universes from their beginning, I think you’re at least 3 decades short on that assertion. My previous high water mark in this genre on TV was BSG, but the team of Ty, Daniel, and I wanna say mostly Naren at Alcon - please correct me there guys - have created something George only wishes he could have achieved in his hay day.
The magical thing about not having a TV is, you come across a clip of "The Expanse" on RUclips and think "WTF!" and then find out you've missed all 6-seasons. So, you then go and bringe watch everything in 3 weeks. It's such an amazing show.
I just hard-binged Season 1 in two nights to prep for season 2. (My second viewing since waiting week to week.) I can't believe how good the show is. Its...absurdly good hard science fiction story telling.
Grevlain hey did the same binged watched it ......... hey, did you notice something, how the hell did "Fred Johnson" knew about Lionel/Mao and ship.......
Julie sends a message to Anderson Dawes on Ceres right before she leaves the Anubis. She uses here code name "Lionel Polaski" in that message. Somehow, Fred hears that message and recruits the Rosi to go find "Lionel Polaski" at a specific location.
You know when something 'jumps the shark'? The Expanse did whatever the opposite of that is. Somewhere in season 2 it had me gripped so tightly that I had to binge watch to the last episode. I just hope the protomolecule stuff doesn't ruin it. I know what will happen in series 3 (just go and read the next book!). I was quite happy with the Earth-Mars-Belt stuff without alien stuff.
@Daniel Appleton what does Discovery have to do with someone talking about Captain Picard ? The Star Trek franchise may not be what he used to be, however tainting past Star Trek because Discovery isn't what you wanted is kind of immature .
@Daniel Appleton when was I not chill ? Someone asking you a question is too much for you to handle ? The fact that people like you always feel the need to bring up everything they hate rather than just acknowledge a comment is beyond me, and I dont even like Discovery.
The Expense is sensational, because it contains all elements that make a true science fiction, leaving behind much that has already been made of sci. In my opinion is a perfect series!
The books are great, best sci-fi in my opinion. Very clever ending every chapter on a cliffhanger and switching to a different character on the next, you just can't stop reading. Can't wait to see the new seasons of the show.
I'm on my second viewing, and it holds up so well. For me the best sci fi series since Battlestar Galactica (2004). Both of these series really captured what I imagine life would be like aboard long endurance missions in space.
I fully agree with you. It may be possible to add to your list. With restrictions e.g. Babylon 5 or ST DS9 But I almost forgot Space: Above / Space 2063. Thank you very much! It's a shame that the series has received so little recognition and has no remake
I always felt that the APO and Belters in general had a Cargo-Cult esque culture to them reminiscent of besters stories. Thanks for injecting Bester's influence (we can tell) and making SciFi more gritty, more adult, less explained, and less toned down for prime time, less Cartoon, less Marvel comical, but with a human sense of realness not far off from our eventual future in space. The scenes on Ceres even feels blade runner-esque (Loved it), those homages are not lost on us! Personally I am looking forward to you guys breaking into feature length films / Sagas, your story style is too big for the mini series I feel.
Very glad they acknowledged Larry Niven (though his milieu is called "Known Space" (not universe). His Belters are very similar. "Tales of Known Space" is a good place to start.
the weaponised threat of rape and the fact the male main character constantly kidnaps and physically hits the female characters probably... good story, but yeah, I only read it for the first time last year and it really feels like it was written a long time ago re the attitudes towards women. But weirdly the writing style, violence and coarse language make the majority of the story feel quite modern still, must have been cutting edge for its day.
+Steve Gunderson They mention in the show when naming the ship Rocinante that it's Spanish for "Workhorse". Am assuming that's why Don Quixote's horse got that name too...
It's kind of a joke name. It means like broken down old horse, a nag. It's funny, once you know the name you'll start seeing it here and there, even on yachts. I named my 1988 Ford Escort Rocinante.
BULLSHIT: the single greatest influence on their writing was Robert A. Heinlein. You want an easy drinking game? Take a belt every time you read a word-for-word (or nearly so) phrase, term, sentence, description, word, or stylistic motief taken directly from the works of Heinlein. You will be plastered by the third chapter of any book they ever wrote. They both love Heinlein. Especially the young adult works - Rolling Stones, Waldo, Double Star, and so forth. There are specific scenes right out of those works in the series - this is not a complaint, mind you. It is a total compliment. But I am amazed that Heinlein wasn't the first thing they said. They even do dialogue like Heinlein did. Plastered, by chapter three.
The Expanse is absolutely brilliant, movie quality on the tv. What I really like is the differing accents, most will have either the same accent for everyone or people speaking another language but having the Belters language is well done. The storylines and special effects are great too. The idea of having space tugs is brilliant as you never see that in any other movie.
Interesting that the below deck fellas from ALIEN were a big influence yet the TV series all the sets look spit shined and all the clothing costumes are nice and clean.
"spit shined?" weird reaction...It's more gritty and "real" looking than almost any other space TV show/movie i've seen, and i'm pretty sure i've seen most of them lol. Of course not everything in the show is rough around the edges though. A martian or UN ship is probably gonna be in better shape than a belter one, as are upper class areas of stations vs lower class areas, etc.
No not really a weird observation at all. The sets don't look lived in, they look sterile, humans are dirty trash throwing creatures and often too lazy to clean up behind themselves. Pilot episode had a rat on board the Ice Collector ship so yeah the show is a wee bit to glossy and shiny, not used and abused even lovingly.
I can't watch this show with out thinking of this game from the late 80's Buck Rogers Battle for the 25th Century. I wonder if these guys read this series of books. A lot of similar ideas as well. Especially the Earth Mars Conflict. boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/548/buck-rogers-battle-25th-century-game
They should make an MMO Put it on mobile - doesnt need the best graphics but with what they csn do now it would work. Got three factions. Earth Mars Belt. Have different types of "game" like An eve trading space sim. Add in space combat Even have "ground/on-foot" missions on planets and boarding enemy vessels. Would work out well and be real fun if done right. Hell. Make it cross platform like minecraft. People able to play on mobile or pc and still play together. Maybe even have a Playstation version The pc n console versions can have better graphics, sure. But id definitely pay $15 a month for even an android port and be a belter just trying to survive. Look to old school Dark Age of Camelot for ideas But instead of medieval keeps that people battle over, have it space outposts. OPA gets enough outposts they get increased exp/or $ from drops or trading Until mars or earth takes them back. Just gotta maybe use drones for combat or something cuz you need a reason to respawn. Or make it hardcore and you just get to pick a "last name" and when your character dies, when you reapawn you get a random name of their child to continue. Someone pay me and I can help make an incredible game that people would enjoy. Wouldn't even need to have read the books or seen the show to enjoy it.
Doesn't work like that. You flesh it out, get into contact with the copyright owners, ask for permission and a monetary deal how the proceedings are divided and then you make a small demo. Only after that you might be able to get pre-orders or investors so you can get a small salary.
Such a bunch of mediocre questions. In this series, at least on video, this story reminds me of the world of Frederick Pohl, or Niven and Pournelle. I'd like to know if there as any influence by those people? The protomolecule gateway is so much like the Gateway series by Pohl, and the characters and mood are very similar.
Love the show, will have to try the books, my only problem is, 200 years is too soon, the level of solar system colonization depicted is 500 years off at the very least.
Arkalius80 Its a major problem. Even if you don't move enough, on earth, you will have major health issues. Now in a place with 1/3 the gravity you would constantly be in too little gravity. Eve working out a lot won't be the solution.
We don't have the research to back that up. It is believed that consistent exposure to lower gravity is sufficient to remain healthy, though we haven't had the opportunity to test this yet. Obviously, growing up in that environment is likely to have noticeable effects, but we don't expect it will be nearly as bad as living in zero-g.
Arkalius80 Well, bet that visiting earth after a long stay (5+ years) in 1/3 earth gravity will make visiting earth into a very unpleasant, if not dangerous, ordeal, not mentioning withstanding high g's during space travel.
at first i thought there would never be another series as good as game of thrones. then i saw the expanse. after each season there is a small hole and i am compulsively looking for a replacement. but there is just nothing. i have never seen a better made series. The new Star Wars or star trek adaptations with the exception of The Mandalorian, rogue one or picard were disappointing for me. Out of frustration, I've already looked at dark matter and firefly again.
You're not the only one saying or thinking that. It starts with the spaceships and ends with the soundtrack. They were inspired by many things but only took the best
Higest rated TV sci fi series and scify canceled it ? luckly its new sponser Amazon picked it up as they know a good thing when they see it unlike sci fi. I think they have a death wish and i think we should help them to forfill that by canceling your subciption to them and going to amazon. cheesy sci fi is only for nostalga value now. i love sci fi i always have ever since i was a kid but it needs to evolve and become more realistic and relavant and cancelling the shows that do that shows scify are not intersed in SCI fi just keeping ther there over own priced salerys.
I came late to the party... This is basically the best sci-fi story I have ever watched on the screen! Like literally, it was so tense sometimes my heart beats so fast when watching this series because I really care about the characters and the universe they have created! To say that they are a genius is an understatement.
The level of enthusiasm and emotion in the opening seconds is....staggering.
Touche.
Hands down, the best Sci Fi series of the past 20 years.

I'm glad it worked out for two different writers, that's a skill in its self! huge respect.
The magical thing about not having a TV is, you come across a clip of "The Expanse" on RUclips and think "WTF!" and then find out you've missed all 6-seasons. So, you then go and bringe watch everything in 3 weeks. It's such an amazing show.

@@astronomenov99 Growing the Beard.
I finished 5 seasons in 4 days. Insanely good
"Picard never had to deal with that". lol
Picard also never got to say, "SURPRISE ASSHOLES!" either.
That's the kind of thing I would expect Sisko to say
@Daniel Appleton what does Discovery have to do with someone talking about Captain Picard ? The Star Trek franchise may not be what he used to be, however tainting past Star Trek because Discovery isn't what you wanted is kind of immature .

Thank you for bringing this story to us. You made this a phenom.
The Expense is sensational, because it contains all elements that make a true science fiction, leaving behind much that has already been made of sci. In my opinion is a perfect series!
Kirk may have had trouble with Tribbles but he never had to deal with mushrooms in pipes.
Kirk is too busy threatening to spank planetary leaders... he has no time for Mario work.
I have watched the show 6 times and its srtill better than anything else on TV. Plus I can catch things I didn't see the first 5 times.
The books are great, best sci-fi in my opinion. Very clever ending every chapter on a cliffhanger and switching to a different character on the next, you just can't stop reading. Can't wait to see the new seasons of the show.

Well i am reading the books at the moment at book 2. Thank you for this amazing world.
Wait till you meet Avassarala. She is fun as hell and waaaay different than show's Avassarala.
r.r was taken :P I like that
Brilliant work guys, we want more...
If you liked Space Odessey, Blade Runner, Alien, Aliens, Space: Above and Beyond and BSG, then you will love The Expanse !!!
yeah not to mention, Clarke, Hienlien and a few other authors they borrowed concepts from. Still great writing.
I fully agree with you. It may be possible to add to your list. With restrictions e.g. Babylon 5 or ST DS9
But I almost forgot Space: Above / Space 2063. Thank you very much!

Think there is a Chinese CEO somewhere screaming, "Why didn't I hire those guys when I had a chance! AAAAAUUUUGGHH!" Every time he watches an episode!
these guys a trekkies!! :D awesome, "picard never had to deal with that" xD
Thank you for this epic story. Fantastic
Almost finished Caliban's war, boy am I looking forward to seeing it on TV next year.
Great guys - thanks for uploading.
RPG in this setting would be awesome
I would pay so much for an ecpanse videogame. Un, Mars, and Belt would be the races like starcraft??
Very glad they acknowledged Larry Niven (though his milieu is called "Known Space" (not universe). His Belters are very similar.
"Tales of Known Space" is a good place to start.
What were the "problematic social aspects" of The Stars My Destination?
the weaponised threat of rape and the fact the male main character constantly kidnaps and physically hits the female characters probably... good story, but yeah, I only read it for the first time last year and it really feels like it was written a long time ago re the attitudes towards women. I can only imagine what a fine MMO that would have been...
That moiré on Ty's shirt though.
The name of the ship Rocinante is that from Alexis Guillilands Rosinane trilogy?
+Steve Gunderson It's the name of Don Quixote's horse.
+Steve Gunderson They mention in the show when naming the ship Rocinante that it's Spanish for "Workhorse". Am assuming that's why Don Quixote's horse got that name too...
It's directly referenced in the book to Don Quixote.
It's kind of a joke name. It means like broken down old horse, a nag. It's funny, once you know the name you'll start seeing it here and there, even on yachts. I named my 1988 Ford Escort Rocinante.
I have genuinely just learned a real fact from the comments on a RUclips video. There is hope for the human race. FORWARD TOGETHER TO THE STARS!

Plastered, by chapter three.
Didn't mention Isaac Asimov's idea of hauling ice from the rings of Saturn? Please.
There are other interviews where they do mention Asimov... I think they mentioned Asimov. They were throwing names around.
TIL Shooter McGavin is one of the authors
Best sci-fi series

Larry Niven created this kind of near future back in the sixties. Read his Known World series.
If youve watched the series do yourself a favor and read the entire series.
When does book 7 come out?
the sound tract sounds like a Super-Nintendo game, lol😂😂🤣
osvaldo franco what's a sound tract?
6:43 There were a lot of episodes, I wouldn't bet on that if I were you...
Maybe not Picard, but definitely the lower deckers.
There was an entire episode about Picard getting stranded on Enterprise while it was undergoing sterilization.
They should make an MMO

Agoro The Orc You're describing a multi million dollar project. :)
You guys are worthy of Gundam, and that is saying a lot...coming from a guy with Amuro Ray as his avatar image....
That's what's wrong with the games industry, a person with no experience in the industry is asked to write one. Fuck my life.
So much better than listening to the actors on the TV show talk about The Expanse.
Such a bunch of mediocre questions. In this series, at least on video, this story reminds me of the world of Frederick Pohl, or Niven and Pournelle. Are there any promo materials or trailers or whatever of that aborted MMO ?
1 things bugs me. The gravity part, the low gravity on Mars are never solved, as far as I know. Its a major problem.
How do you mean? It's about 1/3 of Earth's, it's not really a big problem.
Arkalius80 Its a major problem. Even if you don't move enough, on earth, you will have major health issues. Now in a place with 1/3 the gravity you would constantly be in too little gravity. Eve working out a lot won't be the solution.

why does the right guy look so ashy. i mean he is almost the color of ash. look how grey is his skin.
clearly protomolecule
The real question is what century are your screen from...
Are you setup movie
If they tell me their work wasn't inspired by Mass Effect, then they are lying : ^)
You're not the only one saying or thinking that. It starts with the spaceships and ends with the soundtrack.
