I don't understand why this song gets so much hate by Madness fans. I think it's a brilliant version, way better than the original. I love the sound of the keyboards and Suggs' sweet voice. It's one of those songs that I've never got tired of (It was one of the first Madness songs I downloaded just after discovering the band 4 years ago. And the video, altough not as funny as most Madness videos, it's very good too. And Suggs is sexy as hell here (well, he always looked good in the 80s).
When I first heard the original in late 1981,I thought the song was Italian or at least set in Italy because of the name Scritti Politti and lines like "when the Government falls"!
@@dannycostello1978 Yes, by 1983, British music had been ahead of the US for 2 or 3 years, and there was a real feeling that we had gone our own way. America obviously won the culture war - they have the biggest bulldozer, but in the early 80s all the TEFL kids I was teaching wanted to come to the UK, not the US.
I loved the 80's and 90's and casual culture, the music and dress sense was something today's youngsters should look to follow. It was just a better time.
great song....heard this song for the first time in college on college radio here in the states back in 1985-86. From the "Mad Not Mad" album....found out also that it was a remake originally done by Scritti Politti...
yes cover of scritti politti 1981 this version of madness mad not mad non really success and single sweetest and other song is flop and madness the 1988 album now as concert the album
The original was the first Scritti Politti song I heard, and the first of theirs to chart,in late 1981. At the time Madness had just had Shut Up in the Top 10 and were about to have at least as big success with their version of Labi Siffre's It Must Be Love. Madness's version got a bit higher than Scritti's in reaching number 35 in early 1986,but that ranked it as the first Madness single to miss the Top 30 since those earliest days of (It Must Be) Madness,Bed and Breakfast Man,etc. before their debut hit The Prince.
This video is filled with funny moments from Lee spinning for no aparent reason to the big suit (note Suggs' legs flying up when they spin at the end of the scene forecasting their fall). I read it was filmed at Kempton Park Waterworks.
I'm in the middle of a full on barney with my friends. I'm arguing that this is better than the original. They won't have a bar of it. They are so wrong!

Madness have added some great touches to the original, like the climax in the song building up to the balloon burst, very different to how Scritti handled that part of the song.
madness was one of them rare bands that could hit the top tens with actually good music and without fake plastic lyrics - well done boys, jobs a good un! 5 stars everytime whats number one at the moment?
That is funny, but I think the funniest thing about that part is Suggs - he looks like he has to tolerate the whole thing, like he's not having fun at all, which makes him look funny in result, especially when he's embraced by Lee.
I got into Scritti Politti via this cover. I was actually disappointed by the original Scritti version of this, but I loved just about everything else they've done. Thanks Madness
The Scritti Polliti version was recorded much earlier - the released version was a demo, recorded in 1979. It was then mastered in 1981 but they held the album back so it wasn't released in September 1982; by which time it sounded very raw and a little unpolished for the times.
Sorry I don't think its here on youtube. The dvd is now deleted but can be bought second hand on ebay either on its own or as part of the Sight and Sound Divine Madness release
Trying to find madness ... Business definitive collection the singles ...does anyone know where I can get a digital download cos I'm not buying the cd's
I ADORE this stupid & mad video! The only thing missing is the legendary Madness dance. As much as I love this band and their cover of The Sweetest Girl, I still prefer the original by Scritti Politti.
@cintiamartinez I know you posted this a long time ago, but plz tell me who you're talking about? The girl in the red dress? The one he married really young? Also, this is a Scritti Politti song (for the many of you who don't know - don't mean you Cintia), and Green's ex is rumoured to be in the video - smth he did not appreciate btw. I always wondered who SHE would be? Anyone knows? One of the Black girls or the girl in red dress?
2:41 - 3:25 Don't the special effects used on Suggs' face look like what Peter Gabriel did later in his videos from the So album? Did he borrow that from seeing this Madness video, which I think would have been first?

It’s not that it’s a bad song, more that it’s an ok album track and not a single.
@@ZeldaFitz Ditto, they had better songs on the album, "Tears you can't hide" sung by Chas is a good one.
@@weirdalfan1980 Coldest Day would have been a far better single choice than Sweetest Girl.
It's not way better than the original. It's about equivalent in my opinion.
yes it seems a bit out of character to me - but I just prefer the fun stuff. Didn't even know they did this. What year?
Featuring on backing vocals Afrodisiak, which featured a pre-Soul II Soul Caron Wheeler and Claudia Fontaine (RIP).

As much as I love the original, this tops it!

It’s a brave cover, that’s for sure.
This song is a masterpiece.

I need to get back to the early 80s. I would give 10 summers in the 2020's for summer 1983.
The best period, summer 1983, ever

Maybe my favourite madness song, which is a VERY difficult decision to make.
I sing it to my 4 month old daughter =)
Brilliant. I'd almost forgotten this one.

Madness at their creative and innovative best, with tip top production techniques, to boot!

I remember at the time (Jan 86) madness saying that this video cost £60k to make. A hell of a lot of money back then.
I'm a huge of fan of the original and Scritti. This version is so undeniably catchy and @1:33 cracks me up everytime.

Scritti fan here but this was the definitive version for me!
Madness made it much more accessible.
And it might have been a 'cheap video' but it works
Fantastic cover. Maybe a cheap video, but far better than a lot of videos made from a lot of money for nothing.
Actually, their most expensive video to date.
that video does not look cheap, confused
+mikey p
There is the subtitle at the end "another cheap video", look at that please.
It's typical Madness self-deprecation. It was cheap by Duran Duran standards but by 1985 it was Madness' most expensive promo video.
Of course I knew it was humor.
Madness and Weller knew what it meant to be a casual.
madness was one of them rare bands that could hit the top tens with actually good music and without fake plastic lyrics - well done boys, jobs a good un! 5 stars everytime
whats number one at the moment?
What I like about this song is that it shows a different side to Madness. It's good to be multi-faceted y'know?
