I don’t think anyone has said yet, but “Endless, Nameless” apparently came out of an aborted recording of the track “Lithium”. The band was getting annoyed over repeated failed recordings and Kurt just suddenly burst into an improv that ended up turning into the track. You can actually hear him smashing his guitar at the end.
They did the song live a lot, usually at the end of the set and he always destroyed his guitar at the end, in Kurt’s words “so we don’t have to play an encore”. If you wanna see a good version, the Paramount concert is a great one cause it’s the only footage they have that’s in HD.
I’d recommend Bleach or In Utero, they both give an interesting dive into the band before/after they got so popular so fast. Kurt literally went from sleeping in his car to outselling Micheal Jackson in a week.
They’re both a lot rawer than Nevermind. In Bleach’s case, it’s because they haven’t quite perfected their sound yet, In Utero’s being that they are actively trying to do something different off the back of Nevermind :)

The "K" shield tattoo Kurt was for "K" records in Olympia where he was living/ and he got it to remind himself to always be a kid. I had the same one by a friend with Indian ink and a beer and some weed as a tribute to him when I was 16. One poke at a time. He was my inspiration in every way after my parents divorced. Learned how to play by ear and just watching his hands.

I think this is a very nice reaction, i like the genuine curiosity and exploration of the themes and lyrics of the album.
I'll say, usually when the topic of Nirvana lyrics comes up, you'll have a set of people who'll disregard everything as having no rhyme or reason, while another group argues that everything meant something, and well, despite Kurt himself confirming that he didn't think about words as much as songs, they all came from him and his personality and beliefs.
So i would say, you take what you get, some lyrics are more significant than others, some just point to a feeling or an idea, either way they're all drenched in irony and attitude, something consistent with Kurt is that he was always willing to say something different and contradictory.
Regarding the gun references, it probably came up as a running theme because it fit the sound of the album, but also because guns are associated with a heavily tough and masculine ideal, which Kurt specifically rejected, he was extremely pro feminist and progressive and hated machismo, which is why he talks about a guy that likes the pretty songs and shoots his guns while not getting what they're about on In Bloom, it's critiquing a subset of their own fanbase.
A lot of these songs where written after a breakup with his at the time girlfriend, which devastated him emotionally and caused a lot of the lovesick lyrics, like on Drain You and Lounge Act, even Teen Spirit itself is a reference to a line spray painted on his walls by his ex-girlfriend "kurt smells like teen spirit" which was actually in reference to a deodorant.
That's all i had to say, this comment is way too long but i wanted to write down those thoughts here, thank you for your video!

I'm jealous that you got to experience this album for the first time only now....
I still remember the day I first heard this. I was young...it was 1994, so I was only 10, on a bus headed to Washington DC on a 3 day field trip. The kid in the seat next to me let me borrow his disc-man...and his 3 CDs: Nevermind, Green Day's Dookie, and Michael Jackson's Dangerous. SO early 90s lol. I loved it all...but Nevermind blew my mind wide open. I'd NEVER heard anything remotely close to that. I was only 10....I'd really only heard the music my parents played on the radio or what was on TV commercials.
And to go from that....to hearing Nevermind, on full blast, on headphones? Honestly....it was terrifying. I remember being freaked out actually....it felt overwhelmingly intense. And I didn't understand a good deal of what it was "about" at 10....but I knew it was utterly vital....and I knew it made me feel hyper alive. I had shivers running up and down my spine....and I'd never had music do that to me.
That was a very good day lol....

I'm a huge Nirvana fan, they were one of my all time favorite bands. It's interesting seeing you try and analyze the lyrics, hehe. I think Kurt was very much into the "word salad" method of song writing, the lyrics really don't mean anything (for the most part), it was always more about the music than it was about the lyrics for him. But for sure, it is fun to watch you go through them and get your interpretation. Loved it!

The lyric “It's okay to eat fish/‘Cause they don't have any feelings” from “Something in the Way” is tongue-in-cheek and a reference to Kurt’s Sun sign, Pisces. Pisceans are notoriously sensitive, something Kurt references multiple times in his writing, including in his suicide note (“There's good in all of us and I think I simply love people too much, so much that it makes me feel too fucking sad. The sad, little, sensitive, unappreciative Pisces, Jesus man.”) 💔

I call cap on every single one of them. I also am a movie buff/lover. I own over 2000 movies. Seen probably close to 3000 movies in my life. What does that mean exactly? I cant make a movie react channel cause i have seen far too much worthy ofgetting views. Also the stuff i havent seen is far more lilely to be low tier quality that i am more apt to dislike. Speaking of..... dont you find it funny how every reactor seems to like every single movie? Again, i call cap.

Welcome to the world of grunge music. The early years of the 1990's produced some of the most raw and emotional music ever, and it changed the world of rock music forever. Bands like Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, and of course, Nirvana unleashed the hidden rage and energy that the youth and teenagers back then had with their music and lyrics.
Great reaction by you, Bruna, and I hope that you continue your exploration through this genre.

Spot on regarding Drain You. It's about toxic co-dependent relationships.
Few nice bits of imagery with the lyrics:
One baby to another says "I'm lucky to have met you" = two lovers laying in bed in the FETAL position. one BABY to another.
Chew your meat for you; pass it back and forth; etc. - Chew your meat for you is both a sexual innuendo for a woman giving man oral, and the pass of "it" back and forth in a passionate kiss afterwards....well. yeh.. you can guess. But also metaphorical in that co-dependency sense of the entire song.
    Verse 2
poison apple: eg Adam and Eve. and the temptation of women. (sex)
My water is so yellow I'm a healthy student - eg, urine is not cloudy. I passed the STD test
vacuum out of the fluid. eg/ "suck" out the "fluids". another oral metaphor

I think Breed is supposed to be a wife talking to her husband, who is having an existential crisis, and reassuring him that they don't have to do everything the way it is usually expected. Also, the connection to guns is sad, since he committed suicide by shotgun in 1994. (Although some believe he was murdered).

A lot of people will say this about Nevermind and I think it's a reaction to how popular it is.
But go back and REALLY listen to it. Listen to the rhythm of the songs. Listen to the drums, the flam on In Bloom. How the drums DRIVE the faster songs. The slight pause in Teen Spirit that helps give the guitar that "OOMPH". That song feels like a rollercoaster. She even said, "Now I can breathe again".
Listen to how Kurt's voice accents the songs. A record producer on RUclips, Rick Beatto, points out that Kurt's voice plays a note in the guitar chords. Listen to how the bass adds a really heaviness to the songs and just keep the rhythm going when the guitars aren't playing.
And listen to how Kurt's voice is absolutely perfect for each part he's singing. How he hits the "A denial" exactly the same way. The "Oooohhh" that leads up to the chorus on In Bloom. His repeated "I'm not gonna crack" on Lithium, almost as if he's trying to convince himself. How he harmonies the guitar and vocal in Stay Away, "I don't know why."
Once you've moved past your preconceived notions of the album and really break it down and then bring it back together, it's a goddamn masterpiece of an album. Just perfect.

But theory wise, production wise, composition wise, Nevermind is far superior. It's the best album of the 90s and one of the greatest ever. I love In Utero, but once I heard this fact about it, I couldn't NOT hear it.
The band hates the original mix. The 2 singles, Heart Shaped Box and All Apologies were remixed, to sound better. If you listen to them, they sound different from the rest of the album. That's why there's the "2013 mix" version of it. It's not just a remaster, but a different mix of it.

Great rundown of the album and lyrics, most of the nevermind lyrics are very cryptic but krist novoselic said most nevermind lyrics Kurt wrote was about Kurt's ex girlfriend Tobi Vail , the tattoo is a shield with a k inside it , it's actually the logo for k records which is an independent label that Kurt was a big fan of and probably wanted to be on the label til the big majors came knocking, apparently he got the tattoo to impress Tobi Vail. Edit plus Kurt's mum used to get beaten up by her then boyfriend so some people attach the lyrics my mother died every night , the part were he says don't quote me on that was an inside joke by nirvana as they would ask or get asked questions then answer and jokingly after say don't quote me on that , sorry for the long comment but as you can probably tell I'm a nirvana fan and have been since the early nineties.

In Bloom is Kurt making fun of those “macho men” that suddenly started paying attention to Nirvana, like “he knows not what it means”, he doesn’t get our music, he’s not looking deeper, he’s not a real fan.
about the gun lyric - from what I heard that lyric is just about his friend Dylan(?) that likes guns 😂 maybe Kurt was making fun of him too kinda

Gun means syringe. Kurt uses this recurring metaphor for drug use. A lot of his lyrics are literal references to drug use, but they also can be interpreted as detachment from reality and isolation from others.
In "In Bloom" each line of the first verse corresponds to a line of the second verse.
For instance "sell the kids for food" "we can have some more"

I read that “In Bloom” wasn’t meant to make sense except for the chorus which is basically saying a lot of people like all their “pretty” songs but they don’t really know what they’re about. I think the “he likes to shoot his gun” part is supposed to represent the idea of the average American. It’s sort of making fun of all the people who just like the songs without knowing what they mean or trying to find their own meaning for the lyrics. I don’t know how true that is but it sounds like it could be right.

Actually "Teen Spirit" was deodorant that was very popular in the states at this time ☝️😉
Lithium is used as medication for example on depression of which Cobain heavily suffered!
...and I cannot imagine listening to the songs live... but I can remember 😉

    Underneath the bridge=below modern society
Tarp has sprung a leak=the thing I'm using to cover myself is broken
And the animals I've trapped=the people down here who look to me
Have all become my friends= have all become my friends
And I'm living off of grass=literally the things that grow
And the drippings from the ceiling=whatever little bits fall down to me
It's ok to eat fish because they don't have any feelings=it's ok to exploit those if us down here who are new because if they could see life as we do they wouldn't be new.
Kurt was well known to hit a town and immediately go find the homeless kids. It's where he felt comfortable. This was before homelessness in America skyrocketed and those living on the streets were more like beat poets, train jumpers and hitchhikers. The classical sense of the concept instead of the modern sense.

In Bloom mostly is a rebuke to their fans who have no idea what their lyrics mean. I am so happy to hear you react to Nirvana as a Seattle native. I came to you because of The Weeknd reactions but now I am a true fan forever. As far as the gun references, Kurt grew up in a rural part of Washington in Aberdeen where joblessness was really an issue after the jobs disappeared. Sadly he ended his life with a gun. A Shotgun

Good Reaction overall! He likes to shoot his gun is because it’s fun to shoot guns. Like at a shooting range. He mentions the fun part of guns and not the pain or possible death.
I’m glad you appreciate the guitar and drums.
And the clever and cryptic lyrics.
And he sang, I’m not gonna Crack but he did later so that wasn’t true.
    Good Review!

On a Plain is about a heroin high "i got so high, i scratched till i bled"-This isn't uncommon to heroin addicts. "Love myself, better than you."-Heroin produces an incredible feeling of euphoria. "On a plain, I can't complain" means he's wasted as F

The "it's ok to eat fish" line to me means he's very empathetic and is trying to convince himself. I've had similar thoughts. Trying to convince yourself to avoid guilt. What level of sentience means it's ok to kill and eat? He's a guy battling his own feelings and sensitivity towards these things

Cry on command I think he referred to when your a baby and u learn that crying gets what you want. Therefore crying on command was him learning that he could achieve that so it was his finest day once he realized that’s all you have to do is cry.
