Love when you turned off the song at the end saying “oh it’s not a nirvana song” It’s only one of Nirvana’s best songs About a Girl! Great video, subscribed

I feel like this was the album to piss off the hipsters. Kurt Cobain expressed a lot of frustration with Nirvana becoming very mainstream. Basically, he was introverted and socially anxious, and after the release of Nevermind, the main people who listened to his music were the exact type of people that would bully him in high school. He also dealt with a ton of unnecessary media coverage of his personal life, such as his marriage and drug use, which really pissed him off even more. This is just a really angry record, and the one where he’s actually trying to prove something to the world. That’s why it’s my favorite.
You never miss man. If you ever get a chance, "Siamese Dream" by Smashing Pumpkins is an amazing 90's album, emotionally potent and just absolutely killer from front to back, absolutely worth it
oh you gotta do their mtv unplugged live album, it’s the best album they’ve made in my opinion (right above in utero). the context behind it makes it hit a lot harder too, considering just how close to his death it was
In Utero is my personal favorite album of all time because it's all the things I love in music. It's got a real raw sense of grit and yet can still create earworms, in a way that doesn't feel messy or compromised. Nevermind is an all time classic, it never veers off a very clean sound, only sometimes using harsher chords or sounds. In Utero is FILLED to the brim with ugly tones and chord progressions and yet it all works seamlessly, also the lyrics are incredible
Dirt, superunknown, badmotorfinger, this album, Nevermind, sweet oblivion, dust all essentials heck throw in AiC and one of the STP albums too (I think the 2nd one is the best one?). Dirty by Sonic Youth came out that era too and I’d say fits
I love Nirvana so much, all of their records. They still sound so fresh, so cool, and Kurt's voice/artistry is still unlike any other out there. I'll forever be sad about his passing, but he, Krist and Dave have shaped all of our lives so profoundly, it's incredible
all apologies is one of the best album outros ever written in my opinion. i love this album and it’s amount of influence is crazy. i’m glad you decided to react to a grunge album and i recommend siamese dream by the smashing pumpkins, and alice in chains self titled or dirt for more great 90s albums.
Yes, thank you so much for this one! I was among the people who kept recommending you this album. It's a masterpiece and I'm so glad you enjoyed it. RIP Kurt. I also wanted to say that I would still love to see you react to Nevermind even if you're familiar with some songs. For me personally, the entire album is pretty much flawless and even less popular songs are really, really good. If you're not interested in doing a reaction and want to listen to it in the future on your own, then it's OK, I get it, but if you think your viewers won't enjoy your video, then I'm sure they will! Even if not for the reaction aspect of it, then surely for the review one 😉 And as some people in the comments pointed out, their MTV Unplugged live album would also make for a great reaction. One of the most legendary live albums ever, without a doubt. There's also the video version if you're interested!
There's 3 great b sides to this album you gotta hear in your spare time. Maybe on the toilet or something: 1.Gallons Of Rubbing Alcohol Flow Through The Strip 2.Marigold 3.I Hate Myself And Wanna Die
The song that played after the album is About a Girl by Nirvana, the biggest "hit" (mostly after they blew up from Teen Spirit) from their first album Bleach. Definitely give it a listen if you don't listen to the whole album itself!
Awesome video I love hearing opinions from people who hear these for the first time. I'll give a quick breakdown for each song and what (as far as we know) Kurt actually wrote them about. In Utero is Nirvana's 3rd studio album. Something to mention is that Kurt never really spoke about his songs and what they mean, because he said that they don't have a meaning. All except for Scentless Apprentice which he said in an interview was written from the perspective of the protagonist in a novel called perfume. Serve the servants, might be a bit anti media and anti industry, but other than that I have no idea. there are some references to past things he's done in life, but no real clear or singular meaning to this track. I think that this was a track that he wrote the guitar part for and then wrote the words last minute in the recording studio (which he was known for doing). Scentless Apprentice, Like I said above, was written from the perspective of the protagonist from the novel Perfume. Heart Shaped box, while many believe it was written about his wife Courtney Love, Kurt has directly said that he did not write it about her. Instead I believe that one of his friends or bandmates mentioned that Kurt wrote heart shaped box about an old room mate who was also a musician. Whereas the riff in the song was originally supposed to be used in one of his wife's songs, but Kurt liked it too much and used it on his own track. R*** Me, was actually an anti r*** song. Kurt was a huge feminist and in his words "this song is about hairy, sweaty, macho, redneck men who r***". Frances farmer will have her revenge on Seattle, is about a real person named Frances Farmer. (I roughly know her story so I might get some details wrong, do your own research if interested) She was a singer who was falsely accused of something and sent to a mental institution. The song is about her experience in the institute, and possibly about her rumoured lobotomy (which to my knowledge was not proven to have actually happened). Dumb, is a song that I don't know anything about so I'm just going to guess based on what I know about Kurt and from personal experiences. I think that it is either about drugs or depression, and obviously their effects on Kurt. Very Ape, just like serve the servants I don't think this one has any real meaning. It has some references to the past things he's done in life, but nothing explicitly clear. Milk it, I'm not really sure but I think it's a little bit about how people rely on each other, or how he relies on others. It also seems like a bit of self hate (just to let you know, Kurt wanted to name the album 'I Hate Myself And Want To Die' because he thought it was funny, the studio didn't let him). Pennyroyal Tea, probably my favourite song of all time. There is a lot of speculation on the meaning of this song, and it is also one of Kurt's longest projects that he started a couple years before the band, and he was going to re-release it as a remix in a single because he thought it had a lot of potential (but he died before he could finalise the details of getting that done, and the rest of the band broke up). Some people say that the song is about his heroin addiction (I personally don't think so because of the timeline when it was first written), others think it was written in reference to how pregnant women used to drink pennyroyal tea as a form of abortion. I personally think that the song is about depression and the feeling of repetition, with the line "give me a Leonard Cohen afterwards, so I can sigh eternally" Kurt has said that when he was depressed he would listen to Leonard Cohen, but it always made it worse. And the line "I'm so tired, I can't sleep" , at least to myself, is exactly how it feels to be depressed in the smallest amount of words. Radio Friendly Unit Shifter, is explicitly anti media, and anti industry, Kurt was mad at music labels and wanted to make a song that could never be played on radios, in fact he wanted the whole album to be like that to some extent. Tourettes, As far as I'm aware is just about Tourettes. It might be a metaphor for something, someone, or himself. But we have no way of knowing that. All Apologies, is Kurt's way of spitting back at his haters. People telling him what he can or can't say, people telling him what he either is or isn't. And Kurt made this song to satirically apologise. Some people also think that this was a s***ide song, like a final good bye.But it actually wasn't the last song he wrote, the last studio recorded song that Kurt Made was 'You Know You're Right'. Final notes. I think that clears up the meaning of the songs at least to some extent, there is always more to the stories behind these songs. But in the end it mostly comes down to subconscious thought. Kurt has always said that most of his songs don't mean anything, which is kind of true. Because he was writing whatever came to his head, therefore he wrote the song about whatever he was thinking of at the time. Any problem that bothered him, any person or thing that interested him, whatever. So their songs do have a meaning, just not a cohesive one. Besides, I think while the history and story of something is cool, it is more important what these songs mean to us. And also the song that Spotify auto played after the album finished is 'About A Girl' by Nirvana from their debut studio album Bleach. Sorry for the long comment, but I wanted to be clear and succinct. I would also recommend listening to more of Nirvana's albums 'Bleach' 'Insesticide' and their 'MTV Live Performance', as well as other big albums from the Grunge era. Albums such as Pearl Jam's 'Ten' and their 'MTV Live Performance', Alice in Chain's 'Facelift' 'Dirt' 'Jar of Flies' and their 'MTV Live Performance', and Soundgarden's 'Superunknown', 'Badmotorfinger', and 'Down On The Upside'. In fact Anything by Chris Cornell (the singer of Soundgarden) is a banger, some of his other legendary albums are 'Temple of the Dog' by Temple of the Dog, 'Audioslave' and 'Out of Exile' by Audioslave, 'No One Sings Like You Anymore' 'Higher Truth' and 'Euphoria Morning' by Chris Cornell. There are other grunge bands but I don't know much about them, these are the really popular ones. That's grunge in a nutshell, hope that helps.
Nirvana, man... Grunge at its absoulte finest. Happy you're covering some of their stuff Smags, you seem to really enjoy yourself in your videos and that makes me happy to see! Suggestion (So here we are again): Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
Another great reaction. That anemic edit was hilarious. If you like this you should check out his wife's opus Hole - Live Through This Recommendations Oneohtrix Point Never - R Plus Seven(while not actually considered IDM it is very much in that vein) Lil Ugly Mane - Volcanic Bird Enemy and the Voiced Concern(this one is gonna get you for sure)
Btw, although nevermind is their big hit album, of the 3, bleach, NM and in utero i like nevermind the least. And i still actually love nevermind. But in utero is just so raw and powerful in an unapologetic way. Bleach was also great. Its a little known fact in america but nirvana were big in the uk before anywhere else so teen spirit didnt shake things up the same way here that it did stateside. Their first ever tv appearance was also on british tv on the late night 'yoof' show 'the word'. Theyd also admitted many times that the uk got them first. And they always liked that the brits were into them before they were big superstars. A similar situation to what jimi hendrix had
Man, so many things about this album are just so heartbreaking. Kurt after almost all of his shows on tour, would end up coughing up blood from not knowing how to handle his vocal. Knowing how Kurt passed away and having the last Nirvana song ever made, was just him apologizing for his actions and being himself while not being able to fill others expectations.
Also Steve Albini produced In Utero, he produced an insane amount of records, like Ys by Joana Newsom and Yanqui UXO by Godspeed You! Black Emperor. He also was the singer for one of the best noise rock bands of all time named big black, would love to see your reaction to Atomizer by them.
What are yall thoughts on kurts death? I am a bit of an outsider and i find the entire story weird .. what would be the reason for taking his life ? and whats up with the different handwritings on a single note ?
@@solartea_it is a pretty strange case ngl. I feel like Kurt was very misunderstood his parents divorce really changed him at a early age and a lot of other problems came up in his life later on
A very fatherhood-centric album in my opinion. Lot's of strife between a new mother and a new father going on in the lyrics (for me), and an album that never loses it's energy after all these years.
Was not expecting you to do this but super glad you did! One of my favourite albums and grunge is quickly becoming one of my favourite genres. If you feel like checking out more grunge I highly recommend Dirt and/or Jar of Flies by Alice In Chains, Ten by Pearl Jam, and Superunknown by Soundgarden. All incredible near-perfect albums imo
it's another banger I repeat it's another banger Recs! Broken Social Scene - You Forgot it In People LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver Built To Spill - Perfect From Now On
i'd love to see you do a video on one of pj harvey's albums sometime, especially something like to bring you my love or stories from the city, stories from the sea - i think it'd fit well with the other albums you've done videos on!
Scentless Apprentice is based on a book titled Perfume by Patrick Suskind, Kurt said he related to the main character who was unloved by all and hated people. It’s a very interesting book, I liked it.
this is prob my favorite nirvana album. Albini’s production style is just INSANE. I have a few recs for possible later listening: Brave Little Abacus - Just Got Back From The Discomfort-We’re Alright Death Cab For Cutie - Transatlanticism (or We Have The Facts) Deftones - Self Titled Kitchen - Pussy Willow or Town (same vein as Alex G)
Great reaction. (That song that came on in the end was called "About a Girl" from their first album Bleach)You need to get started on the Tool discography! And pick up the Nine Inch Nails discography again - The Fragile is a good place to start.
Think I've said this before but you produce the best reactions, it's only a matter of time before you blow up - or maybe you being genuine and insightful is not what people want..... ANYWAYS recommendation: All Things Must Pass - George Harrison - or - Desertshore - Nico (really really experimental, haunting yet beautiful album).
Scentless Apprentice is based on the book Parfum, its about a guy born with a super sense of smell trying to make the perfect scent for world peace but it requires a sacrificial ingredient
You are one of tge best reaction channels out there. If you ever run out of reccomendations you should try In The Flat Field by Bauhaus or Etazhi by Molchat Doma(though you might need a translator)
You should definitely listen to one of the biggest influences on Grunge (and the '80s/'90s alt scene in general): It's Only Right and Natural by The Frogs (The Velvet Underground and Nico of the '80s). In fact Kurt's guitar pedal that sold for $75,000 had a Frogs sticker on the bottom of it.
I was 10 the first time I heard Nirvana in 94, and it was this album. A slightly older friend of the family kinda pulled me aside and educated me lol It was important armor in my emotional arsenal, for sure.
Siamese Dream by Smashing Pumpkins and You’d Prefer an Astronaut by Hum. Both are my favorite rock albums from the 90s and have heavy shoegaze and grunge influence.
Pixel bath by jean Dawson is unironically my favorite album of all time, it is in my mind not only the perfect rap album, but also the perfect pop, punk, and rock release of all time. Jean is an extremely versatile and talented artist who doesn’t get the credit he deserves
There was a song releaed after his death (due to legal disbutes with his wife and the band) and its my personal favorite and is a good song "you know your right"
If you liked this and leaves turn inside you I think you should listen to Unwound - New Plastic Ideas. Imo top 3 unwound, masterpice of noise rock and post-hc great reaction btw, one of the greatest rock album ever, youre so consistent!!!
btw2 i will never stop reccomending you lil ugly mane - volcanic bird enemy and the voiced concern, you have to do reaction to it, this shit is amazing!!! love u bro
There are other Nirvana albums, live albums and compilations that I really think you should do: Bleach, Unplugged in New York, Incesticide, and Live at Reading.
Scentless Apprentice is based on Perfume by Patrick Süskind. He mentioned in an Interview that he always had a copy on hand to read while on flights and such. There's a movie of it too. It's kinda disturbing but well worth checking out.
I’m shocked that you haven’t heard some of these records Also, pls react to a Xiu Xiu record! Girl with basket of fruit would be perfect for Halloween!
Now that I think about it. U should really listen to caribou - up in flames. That's some that u haven't really listened to yet without spilling anything and based on what u liked I think u will love this one. Anyone agree? Long time since i commented btw, im real with this one.
I honestly have no idea if you'd enjoy it but I'd love to see you react to Coheed and Cambria, either In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth 3 or Good Apollo I'm Burning Star IV: Vol. 1 From Fear Through They Eyes of Madness (Their titles are long as hell)
The one you thought wasn't a Nirvana song that came on after All Apologies was from their album before Nevermind. If you enjoyed the raw energy from this and Sonic Youth; you might benefit from giving the Recording team's band that engineered this album: Shellac (band) At Action Park (album) Not PC, raw and obscure statements that either go over my head or don't exist.
Also, I'm cruising through your videos today and noticing that you haven't discovered Garbage yet. You should definitely do that...start with their debut (self-titled) and if you are still on board, be sure to check out the next album, Version 2.0. They have plenty of great albums, but I'm especially attached to the first two.
Love the videos! A few recommendations: Nurture - Porter Robinson (light summer electric with fun production) Koi No Yokan or White Pony - Deftones (very heavy, sexier and heavier radiohead imo) Hypochondriac - Brakence (very experimental emo rap, glitch pop)
I've always interpreted Serve the Servants as a biblical reference. Jesus said: "the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve." He was making the point that the road to heaven was to serve, not be served, a classic Christian inversion of the social order.
if you have heard 4 song off nevermind i think you’ll still enjoy it with context of the rest of the songs. also the other songs can be quite different. up to you tho.
Love this reaction I was a huge Nirvana fan in my teens and this album was my favorite, so nice to relive hearing it for the first time. Been watching a few of your reactions now and I really enjoy them 🫶🏼 I reeeaaalllyyy recommend you checking out Nirvana unplugged on MTV 😭 All apologies unplugged… live.. 🤌🏼
some say he's the most consistent RUclipsr of all time
Kurt cobain? I mean, I guess.
kurt is dead for years
Some might say*
Love when you turned off the song at the end saying “oh it’s not a nirvana song”
It’s only one of Nirvana’s best songs About a Girl!

The way Kurt showed the world his pain on this album never escapes me.

Was just about to recommend Siamese Dream! So good
An all time great
Siamese Dream is an essential listen
Masterpiece and top 3 album…. Feel like I’ve said that on more than 3 of these videos haha, this channel is a great trip down musical memory lane
Definitely a classic, but I bet he would like Melancholy and Infinite Sadness more. Either one is fire
I think in utero might be better than nevermind . Awesome reaction
oh you gotta do their mtv unplugged live album, it’s the best album they’ve made in my opinion (right above in utero). the context behind it makes it hit a lot harder too, considering just how close to his death it was

If you liked this, I recommend Soundgarden's Superunknown. Incredible vocals, amazing songwriting. Album is all killer
Plays like a greatest hits double album. Never gets old
For me, the greatest grunge album of all time is Dirt from Alice in Chains.
I think its darker and hits harder... One of the all time greats
I’m smags is doing grunge I’m here for it
Dirt, superunknown, badmotorfinger, this album, Nevermind, sweet oblivion, dust all essentials heck throw in AiC and one of the STP albums too (I think the 2nd one is the best one?). Dirty by Sonic Youth came out that era too and I’d say fits

I feel like Kurt was very misunderstood his parents divorce really changed him at a early age and a lot of other problems came up in his life later on
@@solartea_He was deeply addicted to heroin and was bipolar, in addition to being deeply paranoid. That will take out anyone.
All Apologies is not the last song Nirvana made…
A very fatherhood-centric album in my opinion. Lot's of strife between a new mother and a new father going on in the lyrics (for me), and an album that never loses it's energy after all these years.
He remains consistent
Was not expecting you to do this but super glad you did! One of my favourite albums and grunge is quickly becoming one of my favourite genres. If you feel like checking out more grunge I highly recommend Dirt and/or Jar of Flies by Alice In Chains, Ten by Pearl Jam, and Superunknown by Soundgarden. All incredible near-perfect albums imo
it's another banger I repeat it's another banger
Recs!
Broken Social Scene - You Forgot it In People
LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver
Built To Spill - Perfect From Now On
i'd love to see you do a video on one of pj harvey's albums sometime, especially something like to bring you my love or stories from the city, stories from the sea - i think it'd fit well with the other albums you've done videos on!
One after another, banger after banger reaction!!
Scentless Apprentice is based on a book titled Perfume by Patrick Suskind, Kurt said he related to the main character who was unloved by all and hated people. It’s a very interesting book, I liked it.
the song at the end was actually a Nirvana song off their first record, Bleach. The song is About a Girl and its very Beattles inspired
Rest in Peace Steve Albini, you did a great job recording In Utero 🔥
Please react to parannouls album after the magic! Its a korean shoegaze/dream pop album and you're gonna love the hell out of it man
this is prob my favorite nirvana album. Albini’s production style is just INSANE.
I have a few recs for possible later listening: Brave Little Abacus - Just Got Back From The Discomfort-We’re Alright
Death Cab For Cutie - Transatlanticism (or We Have The Facts)
Deftones - Self Titled
Kitchen - Pussy Willow or Town (same vein as Alex G)
24:50 is a Nirvana song, About A Girl. off there first record. Also the first song played on Nirvana Unplugged in New York
ANYWAYS recommendation: All Things Must Pass - George Harrison - or - Desertshore - Nico (really really experimental, haunting yet beautiful album).
bleach is my fave nirvana album, its so raw and sick. School is my favorite nirvana song, it has an awesome solo and an iconic scream
Thanks, Nirvana is a great classic... As well as - you know who. ➤ Suede (and my favourite album Dog Man Star).
Last track was a Nirvana Song, About a Girl off bleach 1989.
Let's gooooo 🎉
I am once again requesting Origin of Symmetry by Muse
it was inevitable!!
I think In Utero and Jar Of Flies are grunge at its peak, at its finest
This video slaps 👌
You are killing this man. Can you do queens of the Stone Age-songs for the deaf?
The song you got after listening to the whole album was a nirvana song, from their first album bleach
The last song you let play was a nirvana song! It’s called “about a girl” from their first album “bleach”
Pixel bath by jean Dawson is unironically my favorite album of all time, it is in my mind not only the perfect rap album, but also the perfect pop, punk, and rock release of all time. Jean is an extremely versatile and talented artist who doesn’t get the credit he deserves
listen to Ænima by tool
👍
Thanks Smags. Can I suggest At the drive in - Relationship of command.
I luh you cuh
Maybe check out frailty - jane remover or the stone roses’ self-titled 🤧🤧
do their mtv live :) My fav from them
Milk it is the 🐐track on this album. 🤘😎🤘
Scentless Apprentice is based on Patrick Süskind’s book “Perfume”. if you know the plot the lyrics make more sense.
There was a song releaed after his death (due to legal disbutes with his wife and the band) and its my personal favorite and is a good song "you know your right"
If you liked this and leaves turn inside you I think you should listen to Unwound - New Plastic Ideas. Imo top 3 unwound, masterpice of noise rock and post-hc
great reaction btw, one of the greatest rock album ever, youre so consistent!!!
btw2 i will never stop reccomending you lil ugly mane - volcanic bird enemy and the voiced concern, you have to do reaction to it, this shit is amazing!!!
I’m shocked that you haven’t heard some of these records
Also, pls react to a Xiu Xiu record!
Girl with basket of fruit would be perfect for Halloween!
Yesssss!
Now that I think about it. U should really listen to caribou - up in flames. That's some that u haven't really listened to yet without spilling anything and based on what u liked I think u will love this one. Anyone agree? Long time since i commented btw, im real with this one.
A couple more to check out, Queens of the Stone Age and Leonard Cohen.
Helplessness blues by fleet foxes is a must listen
I honestly have no idea if you'd enjoy it but I'd love to see you react to Coheed and Cambria, either In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth 3 or Good Apollo I'm Burning Star IV: Vol. 1 From Fear Through They Eyes of Madness (Their titles are long as hell)
The one you thought wasn't a Nirvana song that came on after All Apologies was from their album before Nevermind.
If you enjoyed the raw energy from this and Sonic Youth; you might benefit from giving the Recording team's band that engineered this album:
Shellac (band)
At Action Park (album)
Not PC, raw and obscure statements that either go over my head or don't exist.
In the genre of grunge I would recommend to you Alice in Chains - Dirt 🔥🦋
Love the "editor david" breaks. If you want to explore grunge, Alice in Chains - Dirt (I'm still waiting for Tool, Lateralus tho 😊)
Please do Black Sabbath (or any metal at all)
Specifically Master of Reality is short and is probably the sexiest metal album out there aside from deftones probs
Seconded for master of reality
Definately checkout sublimes 40oz to freedom.
24:45 Nirvana - About A Girl (From Bleach)
In Utero is the best album of Nirvana!!!
React to Warpaint - Heads up.
Please!!!!!
Love the videos!
A few recommendations:
Nurture - Porter Robinson (light summer electric with fun production)
Koi No Yokan or White Pony - Deftones (very heavy, sexier and heavier radiohead imo)
Hypochondriac - Brakence (very experimental emo rap, glitch pop)
hypochrondriac would be awesome
White Pony would be a good choice
I've always interpreted Serve the Servants as a biblical reference. Jesus said: "the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve." He was making the point that the road to heaven was to serve, not be served, a classic Christian inversion of the social order.
if you have heard 4 song off nevermind i think you’ll still enjoy it with context of the rest of the songs. also the other songs can be quite different. up to you tho.
still waiting for the mollusk review 🤯🤠
Another great album from around the same time you should check out is "Copper Blue" by Sugar.
Please listen to Regretfully Yours by Superdrag or any Superdrag album like Head Trip in Every Key theyre all good
‘Mourn’ by Corbin - a great album
Umber (1989) - Bitch Magnet
Really niche pick
1:15 “getting a foot in the video is premium content”. 😂😂😂😂😂. But most of your videos start with a crouch shot! 😮
Check out some Blood Orange if you haven’t heard them yet
do nevermind next!
you should definitely react to weezer pinkerton smags
My ears hurt when you touch the mic. Had my headphones in. Great Album by the way
You gotta check out Beach House's album 7. It's got alot fo shoegaze influence on it with spectacular production and i think you'll love it.
Word🎸
I love all of Nirvana’s albums but Bleach is my favorite.
You asked if Kurt was ok, no he was not, he committed suicide April 1994.
is this just me or music was too quiet in this video??
