  • See More Garden Goodies: www.WisconsinGarden.com - - - Today we’re painting Alliums. We’re using spray paint over the Allium seed heads with a wide range of primary and secondary colors, neon colors, black and white, even day glow paint. About a month ago we cut down many of our allium seed heads to allow them to thoroughly dry, but we also cut some down today to see how well they hold up outdoors. We created a spray booth and will be wearing gloves, old clothes and spraying outdoors on our front porch with an additional fan for better ventilation. We experimented with this process last year and had great success using a small gauge copper coated steel rods that you can find at any building supply store to slide up and support the hollow allium stems. Once all of our alliums have been spray painted we will place them on our front yard to dry and decide which ones we will place as garden art accents throughout our Wisconsin garden.

      Hi AichKoin, it is so much fun! First time we saw them at a garden tour, we thought they were metal garden art flowers of some kind. Now we know and love putting them out when we have snow banks in the middle of winter.

    Hello Lynn and Richard, LOL! I too, am one of those kids of age. This is such a lovely/creative project and a nice addition to any garden or I imagine would also bring joy to inside area as well. I will be planting some Alliums this fall for sure. As I've said many times, I always enjoy watching and walking away with a new idea from your garden to mine. Thanks! And, have a wonderful weekend! Your garden pal...forever!

      Good morning Evelyn. We always appreciate your warm and kind comments. Seeing that Richard is really only 12, I can proudly say that this project is a hit with both children and adults. Just be careful and have lots of ventilation when spray painting anything. We think you'll be quite pleased with the variety of perennial Allium bulbs available. It is amazing how well they spread from seed. I personally scatter them all around our garden areas in fall, that is when I'm collecting seed heads. Have a wonderful weekend. Good Morning Deezie. There were so many outstanding colors it really is hard to pick just one favorite. Black and silver were very dramatic in the sun, but so was neon green, yellow and orange. Hi Lynn.....what kind of alliums are these? Do you let them dry on the plants? What stage do you pick them? Sorry I am new to gardening so I have a lot of questions and I thank you in advance for answering😍😍

    • @WisconsinGarden
      @WisconsinGarden  5 лет назад

      Hi Samina. You are always welcome to ask any question. Even if we don't know the answer, we'll be happy to do the research. It helps us to expand our gardening skills as well. So ask away. Because large alliums heads are a bit difficult to store indoors, we allow them to dry on the plant until dry (generally July-August in Wisconsin) then we cut and spray paint them and plant them around the garden for unusual color accents. We grow a variety of alliums, including 'Globemaster.' There are many varieties bot smaller and larger varieties, such as, Gladiator, Giganteum, Purple Sensation, Ivory Queen, and White Giant to name a few. Start with a search term and a Google search will help find the ones you may prefer for your garden. Happy New Year. Thanks again for watching, caring and sharing. Lynn & Richard
      Hi Samina. We prefer to use leaves, grass clippings or straw because they decompose within a couple of seasons. Fresh wood mulch, as opposed to aged wood mulch, slightly drains nitrogen out of the topsoil and away from the plant, but it also benefit flowering plants, shrubs and trees by keeping moisture in the ground and as a covering that prevents undesirable weed seeds from germinating. We know some gardeners who use old newspaper and cardboard to prevent weeds because they also helps retain moisture and decompose over a couple of seasons. We prefer not to use wood mulch as it takes too long to decompose and also leaves planting areas too lumpy the following year. No matter where one lives, nature provides something that naturally decomposes quickly that gardeners can find as a healthier choice for mulch, especially for vegetable gardens. What does your area have that other gardeners use? Keep us posted. Thanks again for watching, caring and sharing. Lynn & Richard

    I had a beautiful Drum one, then the following year it was two...the third year the flower didn’t come up at all. What do you think could have caused this? Thank you central Northern Illinois

    • @WisconsinGarden
      @WisconsinGarden  5 лет назад

      Hi Connie. A little research about Drummer alliums not flowering is often due to the wrong growing conditions such as shallow planting or planting in wet soil or soil that is too dry. Alliums love full sun, give them a good nitrogen/potash fertilizer every couple of weeks as soon as you see the flowers appear. Fertilizing can be stopped once the flowers fade. You may want to dig them up and replant them with amended soil to see if that also helps. Thanks for watching, caring and sharing. Lynn & Richard

    Would it help to spray the Alliums with a spray glue before you paint them?

    • @WisconsinGarden
      @WisconsinGarden  4 года назад

      Hi Linda. I guess that would depend upon what you're trying to achieve. We don't want to add something sticky because of birds landing on them (no uncommon) and other critters passing cause them harm. Since our painted Alliums are only a seasonal decoration, we're simply decided to spray paint them to add color to our garden landscape. Have fun playing with your Alliums this year. We wish you and your family to remaining healthy, happy, having fun, being grateful, keeping the faith and ready to play in your garden soil. - #KeepTheLoveGrowing - Thank you for watching, caring and sharing.
