    The landing was Sat 14/12/2024, 14:39 Chilean time. Where the shadow of the plane was clearly visible at 0:50, it would have been about 14:30 Chile time, when the sun was almost due north at 358 42' 50''. So Banjo's claim that the orientation was wrong has no substance. [edit] The view of Rossman and the Connell Glacier to the right is also perfectly consistent with the story.

    quite interesting to see the pilot had reverse thrust on up until to the almost stand still. wheel braking is most likely too dangerous on solid ice i assume.

    Love it! What a gorgeous place! I can see clearly a long way there too. That makes sense in that it's about as far from heavy traffic and industry as you can get.
    I didn't realise before that they actually do land on the solid ice of the glacier. I guess the pilots are really careful to have the craft lined up very straight at the runway. Doing 350s all the way down it sure could make a great video, and a cool memory but, would be a bit on the terrifying side while it was happening lol.

      "Only"? I am Chilean, and I didn't know how long it takes to fly from Punta Arenas to Union Glacier in Antarctica. Reference, from Santiago to Buenos Aires it takes around 1 and a half hours.

      Green screen, behind the sun, the other lands sun, a reflection, Flatz'' filmed earlier in the year in the arctic manifesto (show me where those mountains are in the arctic flatzoid!), etc etc. Fantasy and imaginary worlds won't die with flerfs.

    Oh, this is so cool! I have been wondering about the landing on the ice runway - whether it's much different to landing on tarmac. Doesn't seem too slippery or weird. And what a wonderful landscape to arrive to - right in the middle of nowhere! Amazing!

      You can observe this on any regular flight, given the sun is out and you sit on the side where it can be seen.

      Given the lie to Banjo's claim that they were not facing South towards Mt Rossman. The shadow of the plane is perfectly consistent with the TFE story.

      @@stefanbrill4165 mostly true, but their time on the trip could not have had such amazing weather.
      I live not far from Gatwick and fly regularly and occasionally see my house on approach but most of the time the atmospheric conditions are not as clear as TFE experienced.
      It seems as though the weather has closed in.

      Maybe he'd figure it would have terrible retention so it wasn't worth it. Maybe he wouldn't want to have audio because it'd be a pain to curate what conversations to include audio of, in the case that people had embarrassing off-topic conversations on the flight. Maybe that could be fixed with public domain classical music to listen to in the background.

    I must say that is some remarkable high quality video considering the fact it was shot in October of 1970. At least that's what it says on the video.
    You would think something as important like this video. He would have taken the time to set the correct time on the camera. He had plenty of time to prepare for this.

      I suggest doing the math yourself, to understand the elevation you need to be at to see curvature. 35,000 feet is the normally given altitude. Some commercial aircraft do cruise at that elevation or higher. As this is a short video, including the landing, guessing not at 35,000ft.
