5:35 - Why are the two small compasses slightly different from each other? And why are they both ~45 deg away from the cardinal directions stated for each time?
Magnetic compasses point to the magnetic poles, which are not in the same place as the geographic poles. When Wally says north, south, east, west in this video he is referring to directions relative to the geographic poles. Knowing his exact location will allow him to lookup the angular difference between the magnetic and geographic poles at that location, then apply that variation to the magnetic compass indication to determine the direction relative to true (geographic) north. In that area, mag north is about 40°E of true north, so you’d need to add 40° to the compass reading to get the directions relative to true north (effectively rotating the face of the mag compass 40° counterclockwise). It’s also known that the shadow will be the longest when the sun is true north, so they could observe where the sun is when the shadows are the longest, align the box along that axis and work out the magnetic variation themselves.

Very nice. One question, you had to 'flip' this image because the original was shot through a mirror? Seems like you would have to do that. I'm sure the flatties would cry "FOUL!!!" but then, they're already crying tears.
Yes, you can tell because the timestamp is mirrored.
@@mikefochtman7164 I might upload the raw file and put the link in the description as always
LOL.. I love that at 1:55 you have Dave McKeegan in the center of the dial!
I heard that Jeran signed it? Not sure if that's true but I thought that would've been friggin awesome.
@@spacevspitch4028 I tried to get that to happen but he and the most humble one were busy laying under a table
@whereswa11y Bummer!
Nice one. I do like the name of the device.
EPIC!!!!!
very nice. real science. bet it cost less than sending jeran there.
Great work Sir!
I’m sorry, but at 5:13, you made a mistake that stars will not be visible. You are very wrong. There was ONE star visible, called Sol that was visible. Do better next time. 😜. Honestly, I am in awe of your work and explaining difficult concepts so that the typical layman can understand. Keep up the great work!
To paraphrase The Simpsons: "It says no Star*s*. We're allowed to have one."
@@kellyd6195 pedant.
Love it
@@kellyd6195 I did sucker a Flerf one day they were talking about all the things you can go to UG to do. Running bike riding skydiving but the is one thing you can’t go there and do and that’s Astronomy. You won’t find any trips for that. THATS very suspicious font you think?
He took the bait
now next information to gather:
the ID of the StarLink satellite IDs.
and validate that the same satellite is going above other countries minutes later...
@@willgart1 I was thinking about that. I wanted the solar production figures for the camp. Watts vs time of day
Apart from the flerftopia claims of, they didn't go to Antarctica, but somewhere else, which brings up the question.
"Where on flerftopia can you see local sun north, south, east and west of you for 24 hours day and yet is cold enough for snow and ice on the ground?"
Dont even need the snow. Where and when on the planet can you record those results PERIOD? ONLY ONE PLACE fits any rational model. Inside the antarctic circle in December.
Unfortunately a member of the flatardia cult is trying to say the 24hr sun is based off the reflection of the dome to another dome projecting on that other dome to create the 24hr sun but has no idea how light refraction works 😂😂
@@theadventuresofsarahjeff1068 dome? What dome?
@@whereswa11y this new one where the sun bounces its light off the so called firmament then gets projected to union glacier under a supposed dome and rotates along the dome 360 degrees its utter priceless how bad it is 😂😂 flat earthers are not very good at understanding the laws of physics or how light refraction really works🤦🏻♂️
@ journal of geocentric cosmology is the channel 😂😂😂 dude is a crack pot
6:04 they could have used the darken layer blending
Great work. Amazing experiment.
On that day, a river of flerf's tears froze solid :) .
You played my favorite music, thank you.
4:20 Flerfs are already claiming the deviation between the red line and the green line debunk the globe, hilariously.
Amazing project. Congratulations to a successful experiment.
Well done Wally!

Great stuff WW.
@@Scruit magnetic declination at UG is around 40deg
6:05 nice confirmation of azimuth orientation.
But.. let me guess, we still have flat earthers dont we?
Can somebody remind me, why i should treat them with respect.. while they take the piss of everything we know... The data we gathered as a specie..
Wouldn't a Jeranometer be measuring the changes of a Jeran?
@@elijahbaley1720 it may yet do that.,.
Well done..Bravo...brilliant idea
These could be presented at next GHOU, or Global Hands-On Universe conference..they are involved in science education esp in astronomy for science educators all around the world...Jeronometer and The Final Experiment results could be shared with wider audiences , it can be taught in local schools and all..
How did you come up with the name Jeronometer?
It seems to me that it doesn't measure Jarons.
Pausing to comment on the hilarity in the discipline of Jeranometry.
Flerf a few days ago: But but they never showed a video showing the sun north of Santiago - fail
💯A+ on your final exam!
bah, insert "new flerf excuse" here...
Yeah, but did you compensate for invisible monkeys, dragons, or angels? If not, the experiment is invalid
The flying monkeys are the ones to be afraid of! Brrrr!!!
Should have put a ticking clock in frame as well!
So good.
Excellent.
Very elegant.
Brilliant.
