- The breakthrough film at Sundance this year, telling the true story of one young man and his family, trying to find a better way to live, only to have racism rip them apart again. 27-year-old Ryan Coogler's first film is being touted for award season, all the way to Oscar.
Shot in Los Angeles, June 2013
Gosh, what a beautiful looking man! .... Anyway, I've just finished watching the film. I didn't realise it was based on true events until the very end (I don't live in America). To realise that the video presented at the beginning of the film was the actual footage... Ahh jeez... Life gone, extinguished... All that love for his daughter, his mother, his girlfriend and friends.... The kindness he showed to the dog... All of it suddenly stopped in its tracks, like blowing out a candle. You just don't want to believe it's real, that it IS just a movie... That life can't just come to end like that so carelessly.... Well done Mr Coogler, you wanted people to see the humanity of this young guy, and I did... Just an ordinary person, with problems and flaws and the capacity for good. You hit the nail right on the head.
Fruitvale Station was one of my favorite movies of the year. I can't believe Fruitvale was Coogler's feature length debut because his directorial hand was so calm and assured. All the performances felt so natural. It takes a strong willed person to never deviate from one's vision while allowing the actors to express themselves fully like Coogler did with Fruitvale. I'm sure Mr Coogler will stutter less in future interviews because I have a feeling Mr Coogler will be in the public eye a long time from now with his talent!
Corey Pack Hey I just read your comment and was just wondering if you ever got the chance to write the screenplay? Random question but was curious
James Lee very correct
@Corey Pack any luck with the book
It's good to see a director my age doing it. It gives me motivation
no reason not to, none none none u just do everything u can to do it and be smart and stay true to yourself
Awww he's so young and hes accomplished something amazing. This is motivating.
why not!
I really want to see this gentleman succeed. I feel personally invested in his success.
I hope he goes really far! Incredible person!
He did :)
I've been digging through a bunch of interviews of this talented man, and this has got to be the most thoughtful and well explained interview i've seen of him
This is the best movie of 2013. A really intense and passionate account of one of too many contemporary tragedies, and too many common brutalities dished to poor people on a daily basis. But most of all, Ryan Coogler really brought to Oscar Grant to life. Thank you.
Well done Ryan Coogler seeing this interview from 10 years ago and looking at what you have accomplished now 2024 black panther, creed all these amazing scripts you are doing now and in your interviews still as humble as in this interview. You’re a light 💡
I hope Coogler and Lowry go very far in the filmmaking world. Fruitvale is paced wonderfully and really gives us a three dimensional perspective of Oscar Grant, not only showing us his good side, but his vices as well. I saw the film today and I honestly couldn't think of one negative aspect of the film. It was a success for me in terms of narrative, character, and composition.
I'm really excited about 'Creed'
He actually did go far. Love he’s still doing his thing.
He did an excellent job along with the actresses and actors! a very intelligent, inspiring dude!
He's a fascinating guy and a talented filmmaker. I'll be following his career very closely. I have to say, there's something odd about his voice. Anyone else notice that or is it just me?
he just does a little stuttering
Yeah i noticed that too, he stutters aww so cute.
+kickodude Bay Area speech pattern
He just directed one of the most successful films in American cinema "Black Panther".
He is very handsome and charming...idk to me he resembles MLK,Jr.
My cousin doing big things
He is super intelligent, and very talented
So PO'd that the interviewer cut him off when he was telling us all of the movies that he saw at SUNDANCE......there were a few films that I really wanted to see but didnt know if they would be worth seeing! I did see Nebraska and really loved that one.....Only God Forgives is a Ryan Gosling film (who I think is a BRILLIANT Actor) and he also starred in this film.....but honestly I couldnt get through the first five minutes of the film, so I really wanted to hear the other films that he watched!! But the Fricking interviewer cut him Right off when he was telling the other movies that he watched while at SunDance! Thanks a LOT to whoever is the interviewer! He want to hear what the DIRECTOR has to say ....NOT YOU!
Great work.congrats Ryan!
