First time I have seen one of your videos, Dan and I was puzzling over your accent. It’s British based but with an indefinable something. Then I looked around and realised it was my home country - New Zealand! Love hearing the native birds.
I really love your style of presenting, its very clear, informational. And with your very fine sence of selfwit and humor its makes it all a very good video. Thank you Dan!
Great content, can't wait for the next one. Wish the episodes came out faster, but I understand the amount of work involved for one man takes a very long time to complete, and recover from
Thanks for the encouragement. I’m still learning the ropes when it comes to filming and editing so vast amounts of time are consumed, leaving less time for building. I too wish episodes were more frequent (and I wasn’t spending 20-30 hours on each edit), but I’ll get there!
Echoing other people's comments - absolutely love your patient and informational presentation style. It was great to see the rebar bending in action after your modifications the last video. Finally, loved the Perkins Brothers shout-out, one of my favorite channels on RUclips! Thanks for the great content!
Thanks so much for the kind words, and encouragement that the level of detail I try to incorporate into the videos isn’t too much. We live in such a fast paced world nowadays that brevity seems to be the ‘go-to’ at the expense of clarity! When I eventually get around to the workshop/garage build the rebar bender will get a serious workout, so I’m glad the improvements have worked so well. @PerkinsBuilderBrothers channel is well liked and for good reason. Erik, Jaime and the guys are a top bunch- honest, hardworking and without bravado. Also one of my favourite channels!
🙏 thanks for the comment, and glad you’re enjoying the content and projects. I’m sure the subscriber count will rise once people share with friends and family, and I publish more videos. It takes a while to build a channel following, and I’ve only been posting for 12 months (well, 9 months really). 🤞 for many more videos and channel growth in 2025 and hope you continue to enjoy the content. All the best 👍
Nice job!!! It's pretty good to see your attention to details and explanation, keep it going a new subscriber here , I have watched all your videos now
Hello and welcome to the channel. Thanks for the comment, it’s always encouraging to see appreciation for the details. Thanks for the views and the subscription!
@ I know what you mean, I’ve just spend months converting my garage into a fully boarded and insulated workshop, which is a much smaller project than yours, but I found it really enjoyable 😊😊
Wow, Dan the video quality is superb. Something for me to aspire to. Be great if you could do a behind the scenes style video with the camera equipment you use. Cheers mate
Cheers, that’s very heart-warming to hear. It’s amazing what you can do with an iPhone 14 these days! 90% of the footage is iPhone, with a smattering of DJI Action 4 and DJI mini 3 drone all edited through Final Cut Pro. I do have plans for some behind the scenes video, but concentrating on learning how to edit whilst progressing the build projects seem to be taking all my time at the moment! I’m looking forward to producing a lot more video content this coming new year though.
Thank you. When I designed the building I didn’t give a second thought to the need for a retaining structure, and yet it’s become more of a project than the barn will be!
@@danwaterson356 Luckily the wife and I are spending Xmas at the daughters in Ocean Grove near Melbourne, going to watch the sun come up in a T'shirt and boardies on the beach on Xmas day, sod the cold in the UK...
I didn’t use any release for the steps, foolishly thinking the small surface area would preclude its need. I’m starting to put the forms in place tomorrow for the stem wall, and will definitely take your advice and use a release agent. 👍
Thank you for the comment. I do miss snow at Christmas time (who am I kidding, it never snowed at Christmas in the UK!) All the best for the holiday season.
Ow yeah rounded better.nice bit concrete work nicely done got to say adding that channel for a key is great idea and good tip.the problem with leaving the form on it sticks because of suction you take off after about a 30 to 60 minutes after pour of when it feels looks firm to touch. But for the wall pour you leave on take off next day
I’ll definitely take that advice next time, to remove the shuttering more promptly. Leave the forms for the wall until next day 👍, got it. 🤞 it goes smoothly and removes cleanly.
Absolutely! What I didn’t show in the video is the scratch along the top face where I reversed my trailer over the edge a few months ago 😬, leaving it precariously balanced over the edge. As you say, all part of the history 🤣🤣🤣
Suggestion for your bending tool, instead of using a scrap wood to mark the place to bend, why not add a stop at the end of the tool. That way you don't even need to mark it, and all the bends will be the same.
You’re right, but not just yet. The power conduit is only carrying a dummy cable at the moment, so very easy to relocate (I’ll be doing that in the next couple of days). The gas line is a little more tricky in that I still need the supply for the cabin (my full time home) and the new location for the LPG bottles is within the wall I’m building, so for now I’ll have to work around the gas line, although there’s enough slack for it not to get in the way of the wall boxing/pour.
Hey, love your videos, presentation and expertise! Im an Archviz artist, would you be interested to share the skp model? I would love to generate a few images just to have for future references/ideas/presentation. Don't know how to contact you elsewhere
I’ve added my email address to the ’about’ section of my RUclips homepage. I’m happy to send 2D images of any view you’d be interested in, but I wouldn’t feel comfortable sharing the skp at this stage for a couple of reasons- the model is still very much in flux with some building elements still at concept stage with little accuracy or detail, and the design is based on my interpretation of NZ building code which may not be relevant/appropriate for southern jurisdiction.
Fortunately it was a very slow speed glancing-blow. A few broken bricks can easily be replaced if need be, it’s the sub-structure of reinforced concrete that’s really doing the job of retaining, and that would take a lot of effort to damage! 👍😀
@@itwasrightthere I think you're right, although it did make installing the formwork a little more challenging as there were a few areas where the concrete could have 'leaked'. Just finished the concrete pour a few hours ago.
Another deliberate mistake to make us mere mortals feel better about ourselves.. Because there is no way on Earth that you got a measurement wrong by 250mm. 😂. Ps personality I don't believe that the little trench along the rebar will make any difference whatsoever,no way would that come apart. 👍👍
It’s not a mistake if you pick it up and resolve the issue before construction, it’s just post of the designs evolution. Only a mistake if you build it before realising……that’s what I tell myself anyway🤣😂🤣😂 I’m pretty sure when I roughed out the trench measurements I took the reading from one of the barn floor timber piles, instead of the floor which cantilevers 250mm. You’re right about the keyway trench. There’s no way the wall will fail, however for 20 mins extra work I will be safe in the knowledge that the stem wall will have a much stronger connection to the footing than relying solely on the rebar. Again, for the wall to fail at that point would require the rebar to shear, which is only just this side of impossible!
36:28 @PerkinsBuilderBrothers is an awesome channel. Both of you produce great content! Love your narration. I think your audience would also really like their videos if they haven't already subscribed.
Agreed, @PerkinsBuilderBrothers are a top bunch of guys. Great projects and great attitudes, to work and life- I’d happily work alongside such a crew! They do have one or two (million) more subscribers than I, but we all have to start somewhere!🤣😂🤣
i get more exited for this guys videos than anyone elses
That’s very heartwarming to hear 👍

Thanks so much for your kind words, and encouragement. I find there’s no sense in taking oneself too seriously! All the best.
Quality again Dan mate. Fantastic quality videos can’t wait for the next one
Thanks so much. It’s another enjoyable project which I seem to be making more and more complicated as time goes by!

I love your level of perfectionism.
It does slow down productivity, but I can’t bear to see shoddy workmanship 🤣😀.
Fantastic stuff Dan

Another great episode, super relaxing to watch and great progress :)
Thanks so much. I’m hoping the next episode is drama free and I’m looking forward to getting the groundwork finished so I can start the building.
I heard you from Tassie when you had to move the hole then the the whole southern hemisphere heard you when they hit they brick work
Looks good mate
🤣😂🤣 yes, I could do without more drama when I pour the stem wall. Going to do everything I can to make sure the boxing doesn’t blow out.
Great job again Dan, really looking forward to the next episode. From a cold windy and wet Durham in the UK...
Cold windy and wet? It wouldn’t feel like Christmas time if it were any other way!
@@danwaterson356 Luckily the wife and I are spending Xmas at the daughters in Ocean Grove near Melbourne, going to watch the sun come up in a T'shirt and boardies on the beach on Xmas day, sod the cold in the UK...
@AllenORourke1954 AND it won’t be going dark at 3 in the afternoon! Sounds like you’ll have a great time.
For the forms use a form release sprayed on to the form its just a oil to lessen the likelihood of concrete sticking to the forms.

See, the squares were correct, you can't see the footings that will be buried but you will see the broken bricks! 😂

I would think it would be better for the footings not to be smooth. Same reason for notching between the rebar.
