Perfect..... beautiful workmanship....🎉🎉🎉
You really have a david attenborough like voice 😉👍
Youd be struggling to find a brickie to do it in the UK, and probably up the price to put you off 😂 plus the quality of the build would have to be spot on because of the weather here, what you achieved there is a work of art for your pleasure and now of course for ours. 👏👏👏👏👍
Thank you for the encouragement. I think most brickies would have more sense than to take on a job like this 🤣🤣 With the cold Winter temperatures of the UK the foundation may have needed to be a bit deeper, and although spalling of the shaped brick faces would be an issue, you’d be able to buy bullnose bricks rather than have to shape them (bonus!) Glad you liked the outcome.
Exceptional, very well explained and relatively easy to follow 😂👏👏👏
Thanks, I think I tend to talk too much sometimes, but I’ll get the balance right with some more practice!
Excellent job, better than most professionals.
Thanks. When I bought this place the last project I thought I’d be doing was rebuilding the parking space, not the first thing! Glad I did though as I get to enjoy it every day.
Amazing craftsmanship!
Thanks so much. A high bar has been set for all my current and future projects!
love it
Thank you. Me too!
How many bags of cement did you use?
From memory it was around ten 40kg bags of cement for the footings.
Эх. Здорово начать новый год с вашего видео. )
Поздравляю вас с Новым годом и рад, что вам понравилось видео. всего наилучшего в 2025 году.
Happy New Year, love your videos. A hint for sealing cracks and holes is spray foam. They use it on ICF forms
Glad you’re liking the content, and Happy New Year to you. Thanks for the tip on using spray foam, that would’ve been a really sensible thing to do. I’m pretty sure I’ll be using forms again, so I’ll certainly give the foam a go 👍
"except Dan Waterson unwrapping the biggest present" lmaooo
Not such an exaggeration, bearing in mind the cost of concrete and the pump truck, this WAS the only thing I got to unwrap!
@@danwaterson356 every video you put out makes me like you more
25mpa Concrete is very very heavy(2409 kg /m3). I think that the height and the "bitsiness" of the wall/formwork were your undoing .Some diagonal braces outside would have helped.Everyone is clever afterwrds tho. Love your work incl the videoing.I wanna see the wooden plugs come out!
Heavy is right! Agreed on the formwork, larger continuous panels would’ve helped. I couldn’t install diagonal bracing to the front of the wall due to the sloped terrain, but I could (SHOULD) have put diagonal bracing on the side wall- where there was space and the formwork buckled. Lessons learnt for next time!
Noted you couldn't quite commit to the click-bait thumbnail and not reveal you saved the fail... I wonder if that cost you (schadenfreude) views?! Haha
Haha! Absolutely! The internet thrives on schadenfreude, but I’ve too much integrity to buy into hoodwinking. That said, if the fail had been spectacular I would’ve shown it AND the views would’ve been stratospheric! Happy New Year to you guys, Chatsworth was the best last year.
@danwaterson356 Happy New Year!
I think you will use concrete again. Yep next time use snap ties, with more lateral braces.
Most certainly.
This is RUclips gold! Just a bloke building a tiny barn in peace. No drama, lots of great info and beautiful craftsmanship. Have you learned a trade? Where did you get all your skills from?
Thanks so much. I’m hopeful the builds continue with no drama and lots of peace! I’m self taught, been working on diy projects for the past 35 years. It’s amazing what you can learn when you’re too tight to pay someone else to do the work! Seriously though, I’ve always loved designing and making.
I’ve been thinking from the beginning of this video why aren’t you using pot blocks Still well done for trying Regards from Wales 🏴
Me too!!! I do like to try out new processes though. I remember the first time I tried plastering; hated it and it was really bad job (mind you, I was only 19 at the time!) Fast forward a few years and I managed to get the knack- perseverance usually pays off, so the next concreting project will be drama free! Blwyddyn newydd dda!
Any wall like that over 1m really needs a glut and wedge system, or better yet some reid bar tie throughs.
Absolutely, the ties would’ve made this a simpler, drama free pour. Lesson learnt!
As already mentioned, snap ties, or additional angled bracing would have been beneficial, other than that issue the end result was a very successful outcome to the experiment. After the dust settles between now and when you construct the foundation of your future workshop, you may change your mind (pour / block). The steep slope of the site may swing towards block being more controlable for a DIY build. Loved the rebar work 10/10, and a great tip regarding keeping the release agent off the rebar , I've seen some major fails where that was not dome properly. Enjoying the build :) Happy New Year
Happy New Year Paul. I think you’re right about changing my mind by the time I start the workshop project. It’s only been 10 days since the pour and I’m already feeling like it wasn’t such a bad process after all! Adding those ties would’ve made this a more successful outcome, but the lessons have been learnt and at the end of the project none of the wall will be visible as it’ll all be covered with brick, timber, etc.
you did a nice job, add snap ties and you won't have that problem. They help hold the walls together. looking forward to more to come.
I didn’t think to add snap ties, that would’ve definitely prevented movement in the forms. Lesson learnt!
It's a lesson you only learn once you do it you can't always teach it you have to experience it learn it for life you'll never do it again,
Too true. What’s the old saying- “Tell me and I forget. Show me and I remember. Let me do and I understand.”
Also when you go to full in the gap fill it with gravel don't use soil, as gravel will reduce the weight stress pressure on the concrete act as a natural drain for an water build up behind the concrete so that it can escape out throght the dain wholes, not just get trapped behind the concrete.its the same principle as weep wholes in brick walls
Certainly. Planning on using 20mm draining stone with a perforated pipe feeding water out through the front of the wall. Think I’ll also put a surface drain in the pad above.
yes especially around the weaker parts joints were the frame joints together as you saw with your frame blowing out need to put more braces at the weak points to hold them a more lateral braces to hold frame in. But over all you did a good job for first time it came out really good. the other concrete post you can take that out to after taking the other out theres no point to it any more
Yep, there’s no such thing as too much bracing.
Caution - genius at work! Great work my man!
Haha! Kind of you to say, thanks👍
Great effort mate…. Good luck hope 2025 is just as successful for you 👍👍👍
Thanks, and a happy and prosperous New Year to you.
Really great episode again. The form work was great, now you will know double and triple brace if you do it again. Can't wait to see the brick face work. Can't wait for the next episode, one of my absolute favorite channels
Thanks and I’m very glad you’re enjoying the content. Absolutely agree with the triple bracing, that wet concrete is heavy! Having the brick skin set away from the concrete does give me the opportunity to try something different with the brickwork- still toying with the ideas 🤔
Thanks Dan and all the best to you mate. Always informative and entertaining. Have a great New Year and look forward to seeing the rest of your build 👍🏾🇦🇺
Thanks and glad you’re enjoying the content and the detail. Happy New Year to you, all the best.
Good job Dan, so glad you got the concrete pour done. Carry on.
Me too! There’s always a high probability of failure when trying something new, so I think this turned out pretty well all things considered.
Happy new year Dan ! Some man so you are and keep up the good work
Thanks so much, and Happy New Year to you.
Happy new year!!! Fails are a learning experience
They certainly are! Happy New Year to you.
Hi Dan. Happy New Year. Always look forward to your channel. 🇨🇦
Thanks and Happy New Year to you.
Happy New Year Dan
Cheers Sean, and Happy New Year to you.
So you're not a professional eh.. You're more professional than most professionals.. 😉. Oh and Happy New Year brother.. Or was that the day before yesterday for you 🤔🤔🤪
New Zealand doesn’t get to lead the way in many fields……. but we do get New Years before anyone else! 🤣🤣 All the best and Happy New Year.
Happy New Year Dan!! It’s been a pleasure following along with your projects.
Thank you, and Happy New Year to you also.
I love your channel but you took too much!
Thank you, but took too much what? Too much vegetation? (trust me it grows back with a vengeance), too much time between producing videos? (I know, I’m hoping to get faster this year!), took too much on buying such a large property? (absolutely, there’s a lifetime of work here!) 🤣🤣 Happy New Year to you.
Yep build your form with lots of strength more the better. Use braces lots of them that's the key .all all really good learning experience. remember form release. braces lots of. yes happy new year
I took your advice and applied the form release AND removed the forms as soon as. I think the key to bracing is to put in what you think is enough then double the quantity! Happy New Year.
@@danwaterson356 yes especially around the weaker parts joints were the frame joints together as you saw with your frame blowing out need to put more braces at the weak points to hold them a more lateral braces to hold frame in. С новым годом!
и вас тоже поздравляю с Новым годом!
Did your wedges and clingfilm work? Thanks for the video!
Honestly, I don’t know! It’s been a busy free days since Christmas editing the video so I haven’t yet tried to remove the ply box or the wedge 😬 I’ll be back on the job in the next day or two, weather permitting, and have my fingers firmly crossed!
Happy New Year, Dan! Another excellent video. Thank you for sharing your work. I’d be genuinely interested to learn more about your background as a teacher. What subjects did you teach?
Thanks and happy new year to you. My early career was in engineering, draughting and cabinet making, but for the past twenty years or so I’ve been heading a technology department and teaching- always in the field of design and technology. That said, I’ve just resigned my position to concentrate on developing this slice of paradise….
@@danwaterson356 Your meticulous attention to detail and precise measurements truly set your work apart, and it’s no wonder your videos feel so polished and professional. Capturing the attention of children and inspiring them to engage with a subject is no small feat,it’s truly a testament to your skill and dedication. The landscapes featured in your videos are extraordinary, and I hope you achieve everything you’ve envisioned for your property. The natural beauty surrounding you is remarkable; it reminds me of the striking combination of Mpumalanga’s dramatic mountains and the lush vegetation of the Western Cape in my home country, South Africa. It’s a privilege to see such a magnificent environment brought to life through your work.
I appreciate your optimism in the face of adversity! Looking forward to the completion of this project
What doesn’t break us makes us stronger- or so they say!
happy new year ! great content as always (well saved) !
Thanks so much, and have a happy new year
always enjoy your videos dan, best regards- andy
Cheers for that Andy, all the best and happy new year
Wow, Dan the video quality is superb. Something for me to aspire to. Be great if you could do a behind the scenes style video with the camera equipment you use. Cheers mate
Cheers, that’s very heart-warming to hear. It’s amazing what you can do with an iPhone 14 these days! 90% of the footage is iPhone, with a smattering of DJI Action 4 and DJI mini 3 drone all edited through Final Cut Pro. I do have plans for some behind the scenes video, but concentrating on learning how to edit whilst progressing the build projects seem to be taking all my time at the moment! I’m looking forward to producing a lot more video content this coming new year though.
You’ve done a lovely job of that brick retaining wall there Dan / Mr Waterson. As one of your former students, it’s a joy to hear your voice again, and your enthusiasm and passion for all the projects. That passion is also the reason why I’m taking a career in the trades, specifically a builder; and this is certainly tickling my fancy (so I have you to thank for that!). The total costs for materials are less than what I guessed at the beginning (I guessed $7500), and doing it all yourself was definitely the biggest money saver. You ought to be very proud of yourself and the skills you possess and share with all your viewers. Loving the series so far, keep up the great work and I look forward to more.
Thanks so much William. I too was pleasantly surprised at the cheap cost of materials, which isn’t to be said for the current Tiny Barn project!!! Glad to hear you and your brother are doing well and enjoying your new found career. There’s no better job in life than to be a creator, enjoy!
Interesting to see someone saying safety first but no gloves and no respirator when using the angle grinder or the milling mschine
I was taught to never wear gloves when operating any machinery with spinning parts. I’d much rather deal with the minor annoyance of sparks hitting my hands than the glove material being dragged into a spinning disk or spindle. Should that happen, you couldn’t get your hands out of the glove fast enough to prevent a potentially serious injury.
Nice job!!! It's pretty good to see your attention to details and explanation, keep it going a new subscriber here , I have watched all your videos now
Hello and welcome to the channel. Thanks for the comment, it’s always encouraging to see appreciation for the details. Thanks for the views and the subscription!
I yelled “NOT THE WALL” when disaster struck.
So did I! 🤣
Me and my girlfriend have watched this series from beginning to end. Dan, you are a legend. We love you. We actually want to visit this wall.
🙏Welcome to the channel and thanks for the comment. I live next to a regional park with frequent hikers, and often find people stopping to have a look!
I love this series. I love your attention to details. I wish you would have more subscribers. Guys how to help this gentleman get more views?❤
🙏 thanks for the comment, and glad you’re enjoying the content and projects. I’m sure the subscriber count will rise once people share with friends and family, and I publish more videos. It takes a while to build a channel following, and I’ve only been posting for 12 months (well, 9 months really). 🤞 for many more videos and channel growth in 2025 and hope you continue to enjoy the content. All the best 👍
Quality again Dan mate. Fantastic quality videos can’t wait for the next one
Thanks so much. It’s another enjoyable project which I seem to be making more and more complicated as time goes by!
