A lucid, spot-on discussion of different approaches to translation. I have misgivings about translations that go to great lengths to produce “comfortable” English versions. The can wrest power and strangeness from the text. Just a personal preference influenced by my status as a learner. Your mention of Pickthall’s “Victorian” tone is apt. The same is true of Arberry’s translations in his anthology. They have an endearing antique flavor that brings a smile. Who says “goodly” any more? 😊

Really appreciate the time and effort you have put into this. It is so helpful in choosing the right one for me. And each person according to their preferences. I personally prefer the not so simple English. I think the old fashioned way of explaining makes it sound so much more Important and special. ( which indeed if obviously is )

In fairness to Pickthall, his translation is wonderful to the ears of those of us coming from hours and hours of reading the Christian scriptures.

One funny thing about reading the Noble Qur'an by Muhammad Muhsin Khan and Muhammad al Hilali is that because it uses a lot of more shakespearian kind of language is that it has taught me English words that I have never seen anywhere else despite googling them and fidning that they are English words.

Really good video, especially for those learning the Quran by using translations. Another english translation I'm using is Mufti Taqi Usmani

You should react to the Somali translation! The translator recently passed away, may Allah SWT have mercy on him.

Very well done! I am surprised you didn't include the ever-popular Yusuf Ali translation or the Noble qur'an translated by Muhsin Khan and Al-Hilalai. With respect to the translation of "Thalakal kitab" as "This is the Book" rather than "That is the Book", which is what Allah literally says, it is that "Thalakal" implies closeness and, though the Book was slose to Allah when He sent it down, it is physically distant from Him now but close to the reader.

"physically distant from Him", are you affirming physicality for Allah?
