New Balance 1080v12 | FULL REVIEW | Better Upper... But Also Not?

- Thomas and Meaghan review the New Balance 1080v12, a comfortable daily trainer with a new hypoknit upper and improved heel counter. That said, the shoe runs long and roomy, even compared to last year's version, so definitely go a half size down. Available April 2022 for $160.

I tried on a set of v11 when they first came out, I said “they feel like they’re falling off, the heel is terrible!” The sales lady just sighed, in a manner acknowledging that she’d heard that about 1000x already.
Fact's
1080 times already ;)
I got on EXTREMELY well with the 1080 v11. They were my first big running shoe investment. I have done 400+ miles in them training 3 halves and a full marathon. The bounce kind of died a bit around 350 miles. May be my heel is different from the rest of the world because I had no heel issues. Nor has my heel broken.
The same, had no heal problems. V12 looks boring, non futuristic esthetic and design. Instead of taking the shoe forwards. I feel it went backwards.
I love Meg’s feedback about amortization. It's very helpful for us plus size runners 👍
There were a lot of returns/reclaims for the v11 due to the heel counter breaking. People step into their shoes without untying their laces and the v11 was not sturdy enough /LRS employee
^^^ yes I returned mine after 2 runs bc the heel snapped in half vertically
That heel in the 11 simply sucked, I still managed to put 450 miles on them LoL
Mine v1080 v10 broke both heels!
Great review! I have been wearing the 1080 since v8 and am excited to see this update in more roominess. I actually love my current v11s, including the heel, but I max out the room in my size 13 4E, thinking this is going to be perfect for me.
I bought the V9 and sold it IMMEDIATELY. I know v10 was diff foam, but I've always heard the 1080 is still too firm.
Thanks for keeping it honest guys! I loved my v11 but I think I’ll be moving over to the More when those wear out!
More 3 is the best shoe I've ever had. Don't know how long it'll last, but COMFY.
Thank you for that review, yes the sizing is wrong ! I normally wear size 10.5 running shoes and this v12 is my second pair of New Balance 1080 in many years, thank you again for that rewiev, I bought half size down and they are just perfect !
"...because every shoe has to have 15 names."
I've been saying this for at least a couple of years too...wears me out more than a hard long run.
Something about sizing. You really need to look at the Euro sizes. For some reason not every company’s US sizes match up the same with their euro sizes.
IE on one size chart a 10.5 is a 44 on another company chart it might be a 43.5. On the chart for this shoe it’s a 45! I wear a 43.5-44 so I will have to get the US 10. I have other shoes where a 44 is listed as a US 11.
Some shoe models are just way off but I’ve had way better luck with sizing since I started choosing based on the Euro size.
So glad it's wider. Works well for me. And the foam is amazing. And who really gives a crap about a little bit more weight when it comes to a daily trainer. Always enjoyed boost for that purpose, too.
The 1080 v11 is a mixed bag for me. I put about 150 miles in mine but the heel slip keeps me from reaching for them for most runs. Also, the cushion is very forgiving but doesn't give much energy back. However, as a 200-pound runner, I appreciate the durability. The midsole foam still feels just as good as it did out of the box. As a bonus, they are probably the most comfortable shoe I've ever worn for walking. But for marathon training, even for a recovery day shoe, I prefer a little more energy return. To me, these feel a bit like running in sand.
Yep. Certainly half size down. I wear size 10s in almost every shoe but this one. I had to get a 9.5, but it fit perfectly.
It wasn't until I started reading v12 reviews that I was aware of complaints about the heel counter on the v11. I've had 4 pair of v11's, never a problem with the heel. So the return to a more traditional heel counter is kinda irrelevant to me (hopefully the new design will work just fine). I'm not happy about the v12's additional weight. Hopefully I won't notice it. But I am glad to know about going 1/2 size down, which seems to be a consistent recommendation by reviewers of this shoe. I understand MSRP is $10 more than v11. It was already a pretty expensive daily trainer, so I can't say I'm excited about paying even more. Nevertheless the 1080 has been my go-to daily trainer since v10, so I'm looking forward to trying this one out.
Half size down and green all day. Thanks for the review!
Love the colors, I haven't worn a NB shoe since I was a little kid. Like 35 years ago lol 😆 I think I'm going to check these out though. I'm getting old I new soft!
Thomas...............you're gonna take Meaghan's eye out with one of those laces the way you waving them shoes around! 🤣
Guys you are so cool and positive, thanks for the pleasure of watching your review! -)
he has a narrow foot; I have a standard width foot and this shoe is actually tight in the toe box, I had to go for a size wider and they fit perfect now.
I’ve had 2 pairs of the v10, and other than some wearing issues in the heel I’ve liked them, was was waiting for the v12, but based on this I think I’ll just pick up a pair of v11s on sale
I have three pairs of the 1080v11 and I find the heel amazing and fit spot on, pretty much my go to shoe for anything surprised by so many that dislike it
People disliked the heel, but not the shoe. Some of our team didn’t like the heel, others didn’t mind it.
@@Believeintherun yeah of all the running shoes I have these seem to be the ones that I hear that people don’t like, compared to the NB more V3 the 1080 v11 heels are so much better I think
I had the V10s......bought after all the rave reviews...,. sadly had very bad heel issues and blisters which bled profusely on both heels.....still can't get the dried blood stains out of them and gave up after another run when the blisters healed......I even had to add medical tape to the blister points but they still destroyed my heels. But the foam is superb for long runs, very comfy.....and there ends the positives in the shoe as the upper was a sweat magnet and a good lockdown was nigh impossible to achieve. They(NB)need to find a way to get this foam into a Rebel design for the 14.......(13 must be a No No).
Gosh I had purchased the v10 and had to return them because it seems like there’s fabric that connects both sides info the letter N which puts WAY too much pressure on the top of my foot once I started running. It felt like a nail was driven down so I returned the shoes . Does this version still have that ? I own Rebel v2 and it was much more pleasant and fun experience
The gusset on the v10 bad the fit feel really bad for me, too. Didn't help that it was half a size too small but I'm not a fan of gusseted tongues as a result.
pretty late question, but would this be a bad shoe for someone that overpronates?
I love the 1080 model, I just wish they sold the narrow fit in New Zealand. The B width in the v 11 were a bit too wide, so the v12 are gonna be way too wide, boo!
Would you recommend this shoe for 5k to 10k runs? OR is it for more half-marathon training?
Just picked up a pair we will see.
I got a pair of these as they looked and seems super comfy and cushioned. Sadly disappointed for the price point especially. The sizes were off, too big in a 10 and too small in a 9. Removed the insole on a 9 but still they feel just like a plimsoll! Apparently toe strike is natural but companies put all the cushion in the heel! Hello!!??
3:10 this is fantastic fit! I wish they start doing footshape as well !)
This or Nimbus 24?
Would you recommend getting a normal width shoe if you’re a wide foot person, since it is a bit more forgiving in the toe box ? I’m normally 9 wide in New balance, Just trying to double check before I buy if I should do 8.5 normal with over the 8.5 wide..
Hi BITR, Can you please define too big? I usually like a full thumb nail width in front of my big toe so usually a Men's size 9 D Width for long mile runs. I just ordered a size 9 D in the V12. Will it be too big?
Is that a half size down in the standard or the narrow?
Liked the v11 and have had the v12 for a month or two now. The upper is a bit nicer on v12 if a little warm it is perfectly stretchy in all the right ways. I did size down a half size and this was awesome advice. The main issue with both v11 and now v12 shoes is that the foam loses its bounce / rebound and protective quality too quickly for the price. At 190 lbs this shoe dies for me around 200 miles to 300 miles which is unacceptable for the price. 10 dollars more for a saucony with beaded foam is worth it for the better midsole technology.
what saucony model? I tried one on and liked it; I work in a warehouse and longevity is SUPER IMPORTANT
My thought is that they mislabeled the sizing on y’all’s review units. I just picked up my pair and the sizing was identical to v11
So between the glycerin 20 and the 1080v12, which would you go for as a daily trainer that can do longer runs at a solid (i.e. not easy day) pace? Or, is it too hard to tell currently given the sizing issues with the 1080?
1080 v12 in the right size.
@@Believeintherun Thanks for the response. Looking forward to seeing how the novablast 3 performs so I can pick between it and the 1080 once my current trainers get put out to pasture. Any idea when Asics plans to start sending out review copies?
Nvblast 3 is coming in the fall
@@Believeintherun 우와 노바블라스트3 가을에 나오는군요!!
After running in the more v3 my 1080 v10. and v11 doesn’t get much use. I’ll be waiting for Meg’s review on the more v4.
my 1080v11 have punctured in the heel and in addition it is broken, I hope that they really improved the heel because I was fine (forget the heel)
Thanks for the review. Super helpful. I need some advice- I usually run of Aspics Nimbus and am torn between the N24 and the 1080v12. I weigh 198 pounds and run quite heavy as a result I like a really cushioned shoe. I wore down the rubber on the soles on my nimbus 23's quite quickly.. Is the rubber on the 1080's more durable or am I better sticking with the nimbus? Thanks!
I never had issues w/ the soles of the Nimbus wearing out. I found the cushion wore out WAY b4 the soles, but I see sole wear on my Nimbus 22 after 50 miles or so.
would you like to do a long slow ultra in these? if not what would you reccomend
I’d go SC Trainer or Superblast over these.
@@Believeintherun ok thank you I'll check them out🙏
I checked out both of the ones you mentioned and they look more towards pace marathon shoes.
I'm talking gun to your head run till drop shoe.. comfort, stability, with some forward rocker...? I just did a double marathon in soucony endorphins.. it wasn't fun
I tried these on. The 10’s were too long but width was good. The 9.5 felt good length wise but were too narrow for my little toe. I’m thinking a 9.5 W should work for me. My Torin 7’s fell flat at 200 miles and are starting to rip on the medial side as well as holes on the heel cup of both shoes. I think it’s time to switch to a real company and just buy the wides.
That weight would be lower if the shoe were sized right as well. And as the size goes up the volume goes up cubically (is that a word? cubically?) So, a correctly sized shoe for Thomas could be as much as an oz lighter.
That’s what we are getting at. The right size would be lighter.
I have a HARD time thinking this'll be anywhere NEAR as comfy as the More 3
Guess we can wait for V13 🤷♂️
Do we know for sure when the rebel v3 is coming? I’ve had issues with multiple pairs of the v2 splitting at the sides and don’t want to repurchase but I’ve been in a version of the fuel cell for years now. I really loved the rebel otherwise.. I tried the hoka Mach 4. Big no for me, sizing was off and felt like boats on my feet. Not sure what direction to go in. I was thinking maybe these 1080s but doesn’t sound great..
Sorry to hear bout the V2. Luv the shoe and fortunately has worked well without issues. Not here to rub it in but to tell you I also run in the 1080-have done so for years. Completely different beast. Though it’s sold for padding/plush, V2 feels more comfy. 1080 is a premium shoe that has provided trustworthy performance through the years-usually reserved for recovery. Recently tried the V3 More based upon reviews of ‘responsiveness’ and returned it immediately…1080 much better. Look forward to updated NB line as well.
@@freeian2 thank you, that was really helpful!
@@vincevanderperre6484 thank you!
@@vincevanderperre6484
Agreed.
When are the release dates?
Thanks.
Huh, weird. I went through two pairs of V11's, and didn't 100% love the heel counter, but also put 800 injury free miles on them between pairs. I'm also a 10.5 and the V12s actually feel smaller to me than the V11s.
Thomas, I love you, but if the shoe doesn’t fit, why review it? It throws me off. BTW: I bought the V12 I like it for a daily trainer but not for long mile days. Its very good, but not my favorite. I just got the NovaBlast3 and my first run experience was epic.
I feel like the 1080v11 was also a half size too big, and the heel broke only after 50km and I was getting heel pain every time I ran in it, no support at all. I dont think the store had a return policy so i never bothered to return it. I got it on 40% sale so i didnt feel to bad about it.
Trying to understand what the difference between the 1080v12 and the upcoming Tempo V2?
Tempo v2 = lower stack, lighter, simplified upper
I tried the 1080v10 and 1080v11. I have a high instep and the shoes were painfully tight on top. Went to a shoe with a regular tongue and laces. Any improvement in this with v12? Have heard others complain of same issue with previous versions.
I actually had an issue with v11 where it hurt the top of my foot either from the medial side or the laces. It’s one of the only shoes I had that happen with and I don’t know if that’s what you’re talking about, but I don’t have any pain with v12.
@@jarrettw7753 thanks, I'll try on the v12. It was the stitching where the tongue ends. Tried half size up but shoe was too big then.
Is the more v4 fall 22? I saw the 1080v12 is out here in the UK already but would rather go with the more
Not sure on the release date
I honestly think the v11 was way under sized, I found it much smaller than many other shoes. So I suppose to they wanted to correct that with this update. Perhaps they overdid it. Also, weight should ideally be referenced to the overall bulk, so it would be more suitable to compare it to a size down perhaps?
Do you know the release date of the shoe? Thanks
April
@@Believeintherun thanks!
I actually didn't mind the heel, my bigger issue was how long the midsole lasts, it started bottoming out at around 350 km
Which shoe is more comfortable this one v2 foam more v3 or ultra boost 22
I've had the UB 19 and 21, and immediately sold them after one run. Boost material is a JOKE. That More 3 is the shoe to beat.
So, could you guys from now on when you review any New Balance shoe. Could you compare each models size to your Asics shoe size. Since NB shoes sizes seem to be crazy all over the place from shoe model to model. And if you could say “I wear a size “whatever” in Asics and in this NB shoe i use the same size.” And if its a different size then just say wither you have to wear a size up or down from your Asics size. Doing this will better help people with sizing. This will help people to get the right size. And also always have that wide foot guy who works with you guys to always have his input on the width of the shoe. Meaning, ask him if the shoe your reviewing if he needed the wide version or if the standard version was wide enough. Because width between shoes sometimes are also off when it comes to NB shoes. NB shoe sizes just opens up a whole can of worms where these extra features in a review video are now needed just to better help people with getting the right size of NB shoe. Anyways. ✌️
Am I correct to say the v12 is softer than v11 but not as soft as More V3?
Thank you!
Not really the 1080 v12 might be a hair softer. Maybe
I run in the Clifton 6/8, More 3, and Wave Sky 4. IDK if I can add this. I've always heard this is toooo firm.
It's not firm
Please recommend between Nike Invincible run or 1080v12.
Invincible is too unstable for us, so by default we’d got 1080
I wanna run in the Invincible SO bad, but I keep hearing it's kinda like that fraud of a shoe Novablast 1, and it's ridiculous unstableness. I don't know WHY a company would put out a shoe like that.
How would you compare the fit of this to the More v3? Thanks!
Bigger. Half size down
I do/am struggling to find the right shoe. I have bad arthritis and wide fat feet 😂 I have a US13 2E width in the 1080v12 - I really like the shoe. Solid comfort food feel but…. As was said - my forefoot hurts after a while. I wish it had a little extra toward the front of my feet. Frustrating. I’ll certainly be checking the v13 when they are in store shortly
i get excited when shoes are sized wrong. In theory I need a 15.5 but nobody makes that so i end up with too big or too small. Knock on wood this fits well.
Are we going to see a Vongo V6 this year?
No word, but probably not
I actually went half size up compared to my normal size 7.
5:40 My mans size 10.5 in the 1080v12 is really a size 11. NB just completely f’d up there sizes for this shoe. Im hard headed and i have to see to believe with my own eyes. So i bought a size 11 my normal size in all my Nikes and Asics and yup. It was to big. So had to get a 10.5 and then it fit like all my Nike and Asics size 11’s. Insane to me that a shoe company cant even get the basics of a shoe size right. 🤯
I used to jog using brooks ghost 12 and after I bought 1080v12 , I kept experiencing pain in my heel (if not mistaken somewhere around Plantar fasciitis if I googled the anatomy).
Anyone might know why? so much thanks!
No clue
Might be tight calves
Since the 1080 v12 has lower drop than ghost, you're putting more work on your calves.
Wow. One of the things I really liked about the V11 was the fit. Why do they keep improving some things buy then start messing with stuff that already worked?
Might have to just pick-up a pair of Novablasts instead. Was really looking forward to this update too, I love the V11 minus the heel. Literally all they had to change was the heel & the shoe would be PERFECT 😒
Just try a half size down before you abandon ship
I don’t run. I wear running shoes because I have a bad back. I have wide toes and a narrow heels. I’m supposed to be a size 8 but I almost always have to wear a size 8.5.
Super nice channel.
Hi believe in run and all the runners. Excellent and clear review. Here my like. NB 1080 v12 ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡SIMPLY THE BEST!!!!. A nice week for everyone.
Sigh, looks like NB screwed up the 1080 😞
Lol, I keep wanting to try it but it doesn't seem like they are a good fit for people with narrower feet. Also that weight increase!
Full size down for me. Great comfortable shoe, like somebody is throwing pillows under every stride.
Looks like Vongo 5 very same )))
Yesss 🙌
meg is the best
I did not like the new balance 1080 V11 and I am sure I will not like these. They need to decrease the weight of these shoes. However they do look very good.
Why would New Balance make the shoes too big? If can't even figure out this simple task how should we trust them. There must be some kind of science and rules about it.
Go Meg!
Heavier and sizing issues?! 😬
And all for $20 than last year’s version. What a great deal!
Wow, how does this happen new balance? Shoe is just too big in every way ? You guys are getting some not so great shoes so far this year. Out of the reviews I have seen, ur record is about 1-6. I think the only shoe you liked was that Puma shoe recently. I think all the Hokas you reviewed so far were pretty disappointing. Now this New Balance that just doesn't fit right. Oh well, keep believing in the run.
I'm disappointed w/ the Clifton 8.
The size is way off. Somebody must had been smoking something they weren't supposed to.
wtf for me they are too tight
Also…can we just get rid of the hypoknit. Take the Vongo..make it Neutral and change the upper then every year w/a new number
Come on NB
