Eh, I think the cosmic horror aspect of Moby-Dick works better with the crew steadily starting to understand that the titular character might not be a whale at all, and the question as to whether they're right and they've been fighting something supernatural, or if they've all just gone mad.
Somebody may have pointed it out already but that bit of math you were going for for how scientists estimate size is called a proportion and is actually one of the few bits of math I've used outside of school. It's great, in particular, for figuring out percentages (like say what percentage 23 is of 78; you set it up as 23/78=x/100->23*100=78x->2300/78=x; so 23 is 29.5% of 78.) So for your example (if I remember it correctly) you had 1/16 for the great white, with 7/x for meg, so 7*16=x which is 112. So it'll work you just gotta put in the right measures for the teeth and length. From some quick googling since I'm on mobile and rewatching videos while commenting is a pia, I got 3" tooth to ~14' length avg for the great white, 7" tooth for meg, so that'd give us 3/14=7/x->98=3x so that comes out to roughly 33' in length. I suppose you could also just divide the length of the meg's teeth by the length of the great white's to determine the size difference (using my numbers, this would be ~2.3) and use that to proportionally scale up the shark.
Another thing that would make the Leviathan even more scary - would be if it hunted in packs, like modern Orcas do. Not to the same scale, but a couple of individuals in a pack. Similar to how Arctic Wolved have smaller packs than gray Wolves. So, yeah... I am team Leviathan because I know that the Megalodon is getting it's pockets run through either way, either by that single whale or it's buddies.
Sperm Whales today travel in pods between 15 to 25 members so they don't travel in small numbers. They have also been seen traveling with other whales including orca's and dolphins so you're looking a minimum 15 to 1 fight. If they can do the same thing Sperm Whales can do and damage creatures with its echo location then they can stun it to make it stop movie and probably force it to drown or roll it over and start eating the fatty parts.
I agree the whale would likely take it, not necessarily on the intelligence, but the fact that the shark isn't designed for speed. Since the whale can likely echo-locate, and was similar in it's niche to orcas, it could probably "see" the shark a decent way off and hit with a quick ambush strike. One good hit on the tail or the belly and the shark is done for. As much as I love the idea of the Meg being the absolute apex predator, I think it's at a pretty big disadvantage against a gargantuan orca, even if it is 1v1. If the whales hunted in family groups like modern dolphins and whales tend to, then the meg stands zero chance.
Yeah, people REALLY overestimate how much intelligence matters for fights. Smart as they are gorillas are using approximately zero brain cells while fighting. They're just throwing hands.
@@TheDinohunter2000 it might not get a full sneak attack but it would mean that the whale is already aware of the meg for much longer. the shark might notice the whale but it likely wont have nearly enough time to get an opening
Except the comparison makes zero sense, because orcas have a MASSIVE size advantage over great whites. Orcas win that matchup because of brute force and not because they’re smarter. In contrast, Livyatan is no larger than megalodon, meaning it doesn’t have the size advantage so crucial for orcas.
Don't forget, modern day sperm whales can produce sounds high above 200 decibles thanks to their echolocation, which would actually be lethal to humans, and there have reports of divers that became temporally paralised by said sounds. Considering that livyathan was an distant relative, is possible that they would most likely be able to produce said sounds, it is possible that this could've been used for hunting.
It's really cool to think a predator to the meg was found so recently. It's like if we found out next year that there was an even larger therapod that existed alongside T-Rex the whole time.
Carcharacles Megalodon was the largest predator to ever swim the ocean, at over 23.7 meters and 127 tons, they rivaled the modern fin whale in terms of size. They had the strongest bite of any carnivore known to man, and were *Hyper-carnivorous* due to their massive size and metabolism. Their diet consisted of exclusively whales, such as pre-historic sperm whales like brigmophyseter and acrophyseter, and smaller baleen whales such as the minke whale. They were bar none, not a whale, a squirrel or a dinosaur, at the absolute peak of their food chain. With the immense weight difference, Livyatan played no competition during megalodon’s existence, and died out LONG before megalodon’s apex reign ended, where it stood alone, solidified as the top predator in all of the ocean’s history.
I just wanted to say the editing in your videos is great, and compliments your style of delivery. This was a fun video. A pack of gigantic razor toothed whales acting like our Killer Whales would absolutely be the rulers of the sea.
Finally the RUclips algorithm feeds me a quality channel. You have that early RUclips vibe. High quality content with a low budget. I’ll be checking out more of your videos
While smaller species of dolphin like the bottlenose may not occupy quite the same niche a killer whale does, I feel like they might be another useful comparison for the Livyatan-Meg relationship since they are more on even footing with the great white in terms of size. And, well, while it isn't as much of a dramatic victory, dolphins can still edge out sharks by at least a little bit with a good old headbutt.
No dolphin is beating a 20 foot 7000lbs great white, when large great white sharks are found dead and an autopsy is performed there is often dolphin remains in there.
When I first found out about the Levyatan as a kid I was TERRIFIED. Something most likely almost as smart as a dolphin but strong enough to take on what I up until that point thought was the biggest water predator? Hell nah I'm not going to the beach mom...
I was kind of thinking , the sharks operate mainly on instinct , whereas the whales learn , they can adapt new hunting techniques. Able to teach it to other whales and their offspring. My money would be on the levyatan in a fight
Megalodon wasn't alone either. There were Parotodus, a mackerel shark nearly 8m long that specialises on large fish, perhaps including juvenile Megalodon - basically the king cobra of sharks. There were Hemipristis serra, a relative of the modern snaggletooth shark, but with the size of a tiger shark if not larger. There were Alopias grandis, a giant thrasher shark with large serrated teeth and body size similar to a modern white shark, and probably didn't have a long tail. And there were the ancient cousins of the modern white shark - things like Cosmopolitodus and Carcharodon hubbelli. The marine predator assemblage of Miocene was insane.
@@stingerjohnny9951 Take size estimates with a big pinch of salt though, we are not dealing with animals in flesh but fragmented remains, and the fossil record of sharks is both numerous and terrible
That's like the Livytan is part of the Mafia while all its aunts, uncles, cousins, godparents, etc. are part of the Yakuza, Narcos, smugglers, and more. Ya don't mess with the fam!
The fight is propably decided by who initiates. But I still agree, the Levyatan has an edge. Both due to higher intelect, warm blood, slightly higher average size, and echolocation, which reduces the chances of the Meg getting the drop on it. Not to mention, the potentual of two Levyatan's teamingbup or helping eachother out. Mostly intelect and echolocation will be the deciding factor. As in a battle of 'first to land a bite wins' analyzing and outthinking your opponent is key. And echolocation helps reduce the risk of being snuck up on. The Meg's edge would be the bigger and stronger bite, potentual electric current detection, and the lack of a requirement to surface for air. But the latter only matters in a drawn out fight, which as I established, likely wount happen. It will be a fight decided getting in the first hit. The bite force also doesnt help with getting that strike in first either. It just secures victory more once the bite connects. Finally, if the Meg had electric sensors, like a hammer head, that can help similarly like echolocation. But its range and reliability is much lower and ise mostly usefull to see through camoflage and cover. Neither the Meg or Levyatan use those. So yeah. In my opinion. The initiator wins. With an edge to the Levyatan.
Livyatan’s average adult size isn’t really higher than megalodon’s, and megalodon was ALSO warm-blooded. As for intelligence, sharks are much smarter than this video assumes so the intelligence gap is much smaller than made out to be, and even more importantly, intelligence is NOT what determines the outcome of shark-cetacean intelligence (size and strength is; the reason orcas can kill great whites has far more to do with them being much larger than with them being smarter, and other dolphins that are just as smart as orcas get killed and eaten by great whites instead because they’re not 3-4x as heavy as great whites). So Livyatan doesn’t actually have an edge over megalodon. This is a proper 50/50.
That makes zero sense. Megalodon was 2x heavier and 10 feet longer than Livyatan. Even in the video it’s directly stated megalodon was larger? What the hell don you get
Something you didn’t take into consideration here is the agility of both these creatures. Obviously at their size neither is gonna be particularly quick however I’d put my money on the cartilaginous fish being the more nimble of the two. Does this actually matter? I’d say a little bit but it’s tough to really quantify how much.
IF the Levyatan is like the Modern Orca, they hunt in GROUPS moreso than Sharks. 1 Megalodon Shark VS like 3 - 10 Levyatan still wouldn't stand a chance.

_Livyatan_ _melvillei_ is one of my favourite taxonomic names and I especially like that it uses the transliterated Hebrew form of Leviathan. It just sounds more epic, and if there is anything that animal deserves it is an epic sounding name.
@@John_Weiss Yes! I did look up the Hebrew spelling. I suspected it should be /liv-YAtan/ because that just sounds more Hebrew, but also it would mirror the cadence of /be-HEmot/.

Y’all I was just joking around 😭 I’m not serious about a single thing I said and I know literally nothing. I’m just biased against the Megaladon because I think it’s insanely overrated.
But you shouldn't really underestimate meg,it literally has the strongest bite force of any animal dead or alive, plus it's a little bigger so livyatan can't really overpowered it , and it's a giant shark imagine how much bleeding is gonna occur when livyatan gets bitten

It depends on who strikes first, both have the the ability to kill or incapacitate the other with one good bite. The shark has the advantage of all around electroreception so it would be difficult for the whale to sneak up on it, while the whale has echolocation it only works in a frontal cone leaving it vulnerable to an ambush. I really think this is a 50/50 scenario where the circumstances will determine the outcome
@@HerbivoreEnthusiastif the Livy has experience with megs sure, but if they have just first met most likely the whale, that cone dosent go in just in front of them but also below them. So the Meg can’t even jump the whale which is what it does to be successful, once it looses its element of surprise it may even run away
Lets be real the Whale will win 90% of the time. We already have analogs to this type of confrontation in modern times. Sharks fear Whales and Dolphins. Smarter animal almost always wins.
@@brain_tonic the Meg lacks that fear, as it’s never fought a whale that could fight back. So a livyatan would probably mess it up. As the lack of experience with fighting whales that can actual rival the Meg in speed and size.

The problem with equating Orca to Livyatan is that the Megalodon is equal to or bigger in size, Orcas have quite the weight advantage over Great Whites. I still think that the Livyatan would win but it'd be a bloody battle. In the words of the Battle boarding community, Extreme Dif either side.
I always like that you say "that we know of". It´s a great way to keep studies and minds open when that´s the case. PS I vote MEG. PS LOVE and own the first movie. Can´t wait for the sequel.
Is the video on the Cambrian/Precambrian period coming soon? I’m only asking because it’s a time period that actually looks really interesting to learn about. Love your videos btw!
Given the size and power behind both animals, and the propensity for the Great White to learn, it would really come down to the first strike. Both bites are so broken that whichever one lands that first blow is likely going to win. Be it the whale ramming the shark and taking a chunk out of its side, or the shark taking advantage of the whale needing to be vulnerable while going for air and attacking from below. Both have the capacity to ruin the other's day real quick.
In a one on one situation, given both would've been of very similar sizes, I think it would come down to who caught who off guard. I'd give a slight overall edge to Livyatan simply because it likely lived in groups like modern whales, but both animals could mortally wound the other with relative ease. It's not like orca versus great whites were the shark has no chance.
Well that’s been changed by new studies, the new studies propose a bigger estimate for Megalodon and Liv aren’t as big as though. New studies from 2021 and 2022 claim Meg at 15m tons unlike the studies from 2015 which claimed that 15m and 50 tons was the max size. Studies proposed the max size for Meg is around 20m and 103-127 tons. Livyatan was closer to 12 meters average and 16 meters max.
And another thing is just a few weeks ago Meg was proven to be partially warm blooded just like Great Whites and Makos, so they probably had more stamina than other cold blooded sharks. Some always point out how Orcas kill Great Whites which is why Livyatan would kill Megalodon, but Orcas are often 6-8x larger than Great Whites. But if we look at False Killer Whales and Pilot Whales (the 2nd and 3rd biggest dolphins) who are more around 1.5-2x the size of Great Whites and also live in pods, they’re terrified and get hunted by Great Whites even beaching themselves to avoid them. If it’s close to equal size or in favor of the Shark I’m definetely picking it so I think Meg wins this but feel free to debate me.
@@secretjuice1183where can I find recent studies of ancient creatures? I’d like to be informed of new data when given since I don’t know where to find them
@@tatkkyo9911 Well considering how Great Whites seemingly dominate Pilot Whales, which is a much more fair size matchup compared to Orcas, that doesn't seem to be an issue, the only thing to put big sharks in tonic immobility seems to be Orcas who are 6-8x bigger than Great Whites
According to recent studies, megalodon is much bigger in comparison to livyatan now. Livyatan might be faster, but imo megalodon wins due to its size and bite force. But awesome video, really enjoyed watching!
Considering the power of a sperm whales echolocation (enough to kill a person up close) id say that could also be a factor in the whales favour, either as a weapon(unlikely due to megs size but technically possible because we don't know hos strong it was) or a freaking UAV
If Megalodon was like today's Sharks then it would've been at a massive disadvantage against a whale simply due to their Physiology. Sharks can pretty much only swim forward I'm sure you must've seen that video of a diver rotating an aggressive shark on its axis and putting it vertically facing down, the sharks becomes paralyzed and confused if you do that. Also if you turn them upside down they pretty much become defenseless and harmless. That's one of the ways Orcas k1ll sharks today, they used water currents to turn them upside down, then attack their liver

11:40 just wanna say the only reason that happens so often is due to the fact that orcas are wayyy larger than greats whites and this have a easier time flipping the shark over and putting them into a transe. But with this match they are extremely similar in size and weight, and so far from what I’ve been hearing there’s so far no evidence to show that they are pack hunters like orca whales. While I do believe they preyed on each other I don’t believe however that livayathan won more often than not that bite on megalodon is just far too deadly for the whale to avoid sharks in general are far more agile than cetaceans of similar size. The only way I see a livayathan taking out a mega safety is if they hunted in packs or small groups or duos like in the case of particular orca duo who I forgot the name of 😅 Sharks have a very high muscle mass on average as compared to whales which are known to have a thick layer of fat/blubber which protects them from the cold and not only that have a lower muscle density on average I do believe Megas are far stronger on average.

It's great, in particular, for figuring out percentages (like say what percentage 23 is of 78; you set it up as 23/78=x/100->23*100=78x->2300/78=x; so 23 is 29.5% of 78.)
So for your example (if I remember it correctly) you had 1/16 for the great white, with 7/x for meg, so 7*16=x which is 112.
10:05 can we all just take a moment to appreciate the slides Lindsay used for each of the countries she’s naming
So good
As a peruvian, i'm proud.

Another thing that would make the Leviathan even more scary - would be if it hunted in packs, like modern Orcas do. Not to the same scale, but a couple of individuals in a pack. Similar to how Arctic Wolved have smaller packs than gray Wolves. So, yeah... I am team Leviathan because I know that the Megalodon is getting it's pockets run through either way, either by that single whale or it's buddies.
dont modern sperm whales also have pods? imagine a group of these ancient fuckers lol
wait, isn't has cannibalistic tendencies?
@@ikhsanjava5782 How would we know that?
Sperm Whales today travel in pods between 15 to 25 members so they don't travel in small numbers. They have also been seen traveling with other whales including orca's and dolphins so you're looking a minimum 15 to 1 fight. If they can do the same thing Sperm Whales can do and damage creatures with its echo location then they can stun it to make it stop movie and probably force it to drown or roll it over and start eating the fatty parts.
All fun and games till they pull up with that gang shi
Don't the sharks have electrosensory organs that are only second to echolocation?
@@TheDinohunter2000the whale’s sonar is still much more effective
@@diorraices9013 But not so effective that it'll let the whale sneak attack a shark lol
@@TheDinohunter2000 it might not get a full sneak attack but it would mean that the whale is already aware of the meg for much longer. the shark might notice the whale but it likely wont have nearly enough time to get an opening

The second you said you were going to compare them to modern Orcas and Great Whites I knew it was all over for the Meg.
For real. And once you put it that way it makes me wonder how much social behavior adults would have.
Orcas are 4 times bigger than a great white shark. Not a fair comparison. A great white would steamroll an orca at weight parity.
@@jamiewarren2307orcas are 4 times bigger great whites💀 livyatan fanboys always ignore that.
@@Predation_records dude, Orcas hunt great whites, look it up
Don't forget, modern day sperm whales can produce sounds high above 200 decibles thanks to their echolocation, which would actually be lethal to humans, and there have reports of divers that became temporally paralised by said sounds.
Considering that livyathan was an distant relative, is possible that they would most likely be able to produce said sounds, it is possible that this could've been used for hunting.
Dunno, the sperms need a very long head for that. Livyatan's look big but not as long. Echolocation? Sure. Sonic attacks? Dunno
"That we know of " is the most scientific phrase of them all. That is why i like this channel 😂😂😂

@@chesteran5719 I hate the term "the science is settled". I also don't like science by concensus.
Meg had more diverse food source than what livytan had more specialised that the only reason they become extinct first.

I just wanted to say the editing in your videos is great, and compliments your style of delivery. This was a fun video. A pack of gigantic razor toothed whales acting like our Killer Whales would absolutely be the rulers of the sea.
I love all your videos! And I love how you always say "that we know", emphasizing how science is a never-ending process. Take care!
Per obably not as smart as a dolphin, but still smart enough to exploit prey/competitor weaknesses
I was kind of thinking , the sharks operate mainly on instinct , whereas the whales learn , they can adapt new hunting techniques. Able to teach it to other whales and their offspring. My money would be on the levyatan in a fight
Livytan wasn’t even the only macro predatory sperm whale, in fact it was apart of a family that included other terrifying whales

What the hell don you get
That only upper estimate of the Meg and weight doesn’t matter as much under water especially with bite force

It's even cooler if you pronounce it as _/liv-YAtan/ melvillei._
I usually prefer english pronunciation to my native language, but Leviathan in German just sounds so epic
@@John_Weiss Yes! I did look up the Hebrew spelling. I suspected it should be /liv-YAtan/ because that just sounds more Hebrew, but also it would mirror the cadence of /be-HEmot/.

Livyatan would just flip meg upside down to paralyze it
@@HerbivoreEnthusiastif the Livy has experience with megs sure, but if they have just first met most likely the whale, that cone dosent go in just in front of them but also below them.

No wonder the documentary " Prehistoric Predators " never showed the Livyatan whale.
I'm glad your channel grew so much, you're quite amazing.
@secretjuice1183 also the tonic immobility many not have been an issue for Meg..... so many variables.
You have such an incredibly cool vide and presentation. Just feels like someone excited to talk about something they like. Subbed.
I freaking adore you beyond words! never change and keep being amazing
I think we're going to need a bigger boat.. oh wait..
Sharks can pretty much only swim forward
I'm sure you must've seen that video of a diver rotating an aggressive shark on its axis and putting it vertically facing down, the sharks becomes paralyzed and confused if you do that.

The only way I see a livayathan taking out a mega safety is if they hunted in packs or small groups or duos like in the case of particular orca duo who I forgot the name of 😅
Sharks have a very high muscle mass on average as compared to whales which are known to have a thick layer of fat/blubber which protects them from the cold and not only that have a lower muscle density on average I do believe Megas are far stronger on average.
