This is a short documentary about Simon Lavaud, a blacksmith based in the French Alps. It was one of the most interesting projects I worked on and I hope you enjoy it! Filmed with Alex Botton www.youtube.com/@alex-botton Cheers, Flo
I had a great time working on this with you, I think we ended up with something really pretty considering we only had the one day to shoot it and it was just the two of us! The edit looks beautiful, well done man. Hopefully we can get a few more done this year together!
I Fuckin Love this. I’m cursing intentionally because it was that good for me. Light, the sound quality, but mainly Simon’s story and the way he articulates how much he loves what he does and he wants his kids to perceive it. Respect as usual man.
Flo, you make the Blackmagic cameras shine. Your story telling and use of light is always beautifully nestled in the perfect frame. Thanks for sharing your work with us!
What a fascinating craft! It's great to see Simon maintaining a traditional process and outlook on not only his art but life aswell. Yourself and Alex produced an awesome short doco, loved the history told throughout the video and the way you captured it.
ABSOLUTELY STUNNING ! Love the overall atmosphere of the shots very nicely put together with the different musics. Having the good camera is one thing but being able to use it and render like this is another! Congrats Bro, as always!
Excellent! Can you say if you overexposed and then put it down in-post? Shadows seen super clean. Also what microphone you used to record the various sounds? ❤
Thanks!! We didn't overexposed no, as the fire and blades were so hot we had to expose for the highlights! So I denoised a few shots and added some contrasts :) And we used the MKE600 for both the interview and ambient sounds as well as the camera mics and also some SFX.
@@OfTwoLands Thanksv a lot, it looks really great. can you share the denoise settings if you did that in resolve? When i try to do this it’s always looses so much detail it looks plastic. Could you please also say which lens you used?
well done guys:) would you mind to share a link to the raw footage somewhere on a free cloud storage? with or without post-production like color correction ect. would be very nice to have a chance to see it without compression. very good job!
My friend, this was shot beautifully. One question. How much light did you add to the natural lighting in order to expose so perfectly in a seemingly dark environment?
Thanks so much!! We use a Nanlite FS 150B and one Pavotube 15C II, mainly for the interview and also to add either a bit of room tone or to focus the light on the face or hands when needed. We didn't have a lot of space to work with so the main light was motivated by the window and we moved the tube around :)
Thank you, glad you liked it!! And no I don’t sharpen my footage, I add a little bit of contrast (and saturation) but the rest is done using Filmconvert and curves :).
Well done. What made those DZO Vespid Retro stand out for you? Why did you pick them? They seem to have a unique bokah character, also a soft fall off to the side, at least on the wider lenses. Did you shoot full frame?
Thanks so much!! I already the Vespid retros from the previous shoot and loved them so decided to also use them for this one :). This was shot in S35 since the 6K Ff wasn’t released yet.
@@OfTwoLands I think I saw on my way to work this morning, but didn’t have time to watch it. I’ll be sure to check on my way home! Thanks for your work!

Amazing man ... did you use qny slider or gimbal for this? How did you manage to get the moving shots for knife?
Thanks!! We didn’t use any sliders or gimbals. Handheld and easyrig :). The moving knives shots were handheld with great concentration haha!

Did you removed colour grading video of this footage?
Is it possible to see how you rigged your camera? Maybe you have made a video or shared it somewhere?
