Oh my god, it is so wonderful, to hear such a great player, playing an excellent Archtop in the right way. This artform is only done by a very few artist, with the love and passion for the work, you have to do , to get into a deep understanding for the sound and technique , that you need to sound great.😊
Being unable to attend the Fretboard Summit, I must regard this excellent interview and performance as the next best thing. I'm a great admirer of Matt's playing; he's one of the finest jazz guitarists, in the grand old tradition, that I've heard -- it's only fitting that he should be playing that beautiful L-5.
at @11:44 he is so right, old archtops do stiffen up if they aren't played, but they do tend to wake up when they are being played regularly. I've noticed this so many times.
When did American guitar manufacturers/luthiers first start making f-holed archtop guitars? What was the first year of that style? I know that, in the video/interview, Matt seems to say that his L-5 was part of a series of instruments produced between 1924 and 1929, but that's as far as L-5s are concerned. What I want to know is WHO was the FIRST maker of archtopped, f-holed acoustic guitars, and when?
Can you guys please work on your sound quality? As a podcast targeted to musicians, you fall behind a cage fighting commentator/comedian (Joe Rogan) and a convicted felon and reformed drug addict/comedian (Joey Diaz) in your sound quality-this is sad. This issue continues to this day.
Yes, I totally agree!! Altogether I was probably able to understand maybe about 10% of the "Interview" at best! Incredibly frustrating to say the least! I would suggest changing the title of this video to "A Couple of Tunes". Then, if they are interested in adding more content, I would highly suggest investing in some, at the very least, Adequate sound equipment! Very sad and very frustrating! Such very good content, and so unspeakably poorly presented.

Beautiful sound! Is that an archtop guitar with acoustic (bronze) strings on it?
That guitar sounds incredible! I wonder what sort of strings he has on there.
Guitar strings ;)
@@PhilipPoland1987 I was literally about to reply the same thing. Just found this video. You beat me to it by a year.
12's or maybe even 13's would be my guess.
Heavy gauge for sure .May be 13/54
By the way, these guitars are the highest point of evolution of acoustic archtops imo.
