Both these guys are amazingly great players -- but Matt's guitar has a spectacularly rich tone that make's Jonathan sound a bit thin by comparison, especially when playing single notes on the high strings.
Matt's early '30s L-5 has a 16" lower bout, whereas Jonathan's late '30s model has 17" -- a smaller body tends to yield more cutting power and focus, particularly in a duo setting, as here, or small group. The larger body was designed for chunking rhythm in a big band.
@@Trombonology true, but I would have thought the 17" would sound thicker and richer. I think in this case it's just that Matt's guitar was angled more towards the microphone.
@@adamhowemusic283 Possibly, but even the tone is different -- to my ears, anyway. I know Matt's guitar is parallel-braced, and I'm pretty sure that Jonathan's is also, but Matt's sounds more typical of the parallel sound. In any case, no two, even with identical features, sound exactly alike.
Jonathan has a more relaxed attack while Matt has a more aggressive picking and strumming style so to compare, ideally they would need to switch guitars to see how the two L5s respond.
holy fucking shit. this is smoking hot. you guys' .....what the fuck!? where you comin' from?! great comping, great solo ideas - and i'm subscribing. thats all i got - please let me know if there's more of this, i want seconds!

These guys are the "Bee's Knees" and the "Cat's Pajamas."

I noticed that too! Matt's guitar seems to have more life to it and cuts through better.

👏👏👏
If you took sunshine and a rainbow, and turned it into a musical piece, it would be played on a swing guitar.
Matt Munisteri and Jonathan Stout
