Beautiful work, especially with the resin kalimba! This may be my inner chemist speaking, but when sanding a kalimba (or anything else, really), please maybe consider wearing a mask :) Breathing in the fine dust produced in the process is not exactly healthy, so you do might want to avoid doing so. I am aware that the video is two years old at this point, so maybe this is more of a note for those planning on making their own kalimba in the future. That being said, thank you very much for showing your work, it is impressive!
The reason the wood one doesnt sound good is due to the large hollow in the box for a resonance chamber. Good in theory but as the bridge is not totally immobile its not enough to transfer the sound into it the piece fails. The flex in the top pannel absorbs and dampens the sound. The veneer also works against you. Put a block or support on the inside under the bridge and go with actual hardwood and youll be golden
Hello, a year ago I thought about selling resin kalimbas, because I live in an area of Colombia where they are hardly sold. I was scared because I didn't know if the resin was going to allow me to make the kalimba sound good. I saw your video and it motivated me too much, I fell in love. Yesterday I performed the first kalimba, it was beautiful but the sound frustrated me a bit, no note is lost, however it sounds very little, I know that because I do not have a soundboard it is one of the reasons why my kalimba sounds lower. I want to know if you know any tricks or something to make the kalimba sound its best, if perhaps the sound also depends on the thickness of the keys or the thickness of the resin. Please
What do you mean with Soundboard? Sorry I am not sure what you ment. Well first of all I don't have any kind of knowledge about making kalimbas I just made those two and that's it. That being said tho one thing that was very obvious, was how deep and low the sound was that the resin one made. At the same time that sound is beautiful but it isn't very loud. I would love to know if it the same when you buy an acrylic kalimba because I wouldn't see how to drastically improve that. Well if you want to find out I would suggest to just buy a few DIY kalimba sets (I bought mine on AliExpress for like 2$ each) and then mold a few resin kalimbas with different thicknesses. Well anyways sounds amazing and I think many people would be truly facinated as well as exited to buy a kalimba from you. I hope you'll manage to find the motivation to keep on with this project 🔥
Same failure on wooden kalimba, i tried to make one. The mistake is the sides of the kalimba is too thin.. Thats why the high notes sounds bad. Btw, thanks for sharing ☺ good luck brother
Im curious to make one myself, but im having trouble figuring out if the wood pieces that put tension on the tines are glued/screwed into the box? or is it held on by tension from the keys alone?
Hey! This is Gertjan. Awesome creation, I love your videos man, keep... them...going! You keep me motivating during these times and I'll keep supporting you :)
Aw lovely words and I am really happy that you liked it. At the moment everything is a bit of a mess but actually a good time to spend in the workshop if you ask me :). Which kalimba do you prefer visually?
I would defenately make a solid one. If you can find a nice solid piece of wood that's very dense (heavy) and then look online to buy the kalimba keys (the metal pieces that you mount on top). At that point you just have to shape and smooth out the kalimba as well as drill holes for the screws and screw it on.
i want to make a resin kalimba with a cherry blossom or cherry tree design and i dont know how to paint in resin if you could teach us how to paint in resin that would be really helpful
That sounds really really awesome. I don't really know how to paint in epoxy either. The flowers I placed in my epoxy here always floated to the top it was super annoying. I probably would try to go layer by layer next time letting it harden Inbetween so that things stay in place. But that's all the tips I can give you, I bet there are loads of tutorials out there. Best of luck 💥
Like it :) i realy want to make on diy kalimba do you know wich materials? I have wooden pièces that my father dont use anymore so i think that its good enough :)
I am everything but experienced with wooden instruments hahaha. But what I do know is that you try to use as thin wood as possible that is as massive as possible. But because of how hard it is to find strong yet thin wood you can actually just build it out of plywood. To my surprise many expensive guitars are actually made from plywood. If you make a solid kalimba without a hollow middle it's gonna be a lot more quiet but in my opinion has a nicer tone to it. Have fun playing around with it! Hopefully you'll have a great time and lean a lot.
I also thinking to make this but i failed hahahaha.. the resin that i used very smelly 😣 Hahah at least i can know that full resin can be a good kalimba too ❣️ Thank you for sharingg! It was beautifull!
I wouldn't know how to create a decent sound with homemade metal pieces but I bet it's easier than one might think. It cost me below 2€ to order them tho so I chose to go that path.
So really, just making a box and assembling a kit. I was looking for how to make the key arms and tune them.... not 'make' a kit. Thanks for playing though, bud.
The resin one is so darn PRETTY?!? This video needs so much more hype!!
Kind words :D ...well I am already really thankful that so many people take the time to check it out.
I am in love with the resin one 😍😘
Awesome work!!! I've made some Kalimbas as well!! I love it!!!

Quite a pleasant comment to read. I hope to see you around ☺️
What resin did you buy? What did you spray on the resin afterward?
Thanks for showing us!!
Glad I was helpful :D
Love the avatar reference great work altogether

Oh my ...those tips all make incredible sense and make the problem seem so clear. It makes sense with all observation I've made. You're a legend 🙌🏻

Really peaceful while you were making, good job😁😀😊,I don't know whether it was of background music but I loved it very much ☺
Thanks for the feedback :D. I try a lot of different styles in my videos hopefully that keeps it interesting.
@@makermind2050 oh,that's superb
can the bridges and the body be a single piece of wood? or is there a reason it's separate pieces?
what kind of flower do you use in the epoxy one?
I just bought a box of random dried flowers from AliExpress

Thanks for sharing your experience :D. Appreciate it
Btw on my second channel "teamed up" I uploaded some bird footage I captured. I feel like you could enjoy it 🔥

Beautiful sound, might I inquire as to where you got the 'parts'?
I got the metal parts from AliExpress. And the wood from a hardware store.
Temu sells them too...that's where I got mine. 😊

@@makermind2050 the resin cast version. The sound coming from that one are really similar to the Avatar cartoon outro!
Can you list the materials, I have to make a kalimba for my science class.

Ciao, master! Bravo!
what are the measurements in centimeters of the resin kalimba?
11x15x2.7
One of those songs is play date from Melanie martinez
Omg the epoxy is stunning. You're so skillful and talented.
That's really sweet of you. I hope you let noone ever take away your kindness.

Your resin kalimba is so pretty😍 if I may ask, how much resin did you use?
Hmm ...good question, I think around 500ml. You can just calculate the volume of a box if you don't know how much resin to prepare.
What resin did u use

Did you mix resin with water? Or simply resin?
Just resin. I don't think it would be good to mix it with water.
@@makermind2050 Thanks for the info..
Sehr schön😍
Ja, besonders das Kalimba mit das Epoxidharz, ich finde das wunderschön!

You dont do a kalimba, you do a little box, kalimba is a all sound system.

They cost less than 2€ I don't see any reason to make them yourself honestly 👀
Is that the song from fortnite in the background
Fuck, it's 11 vidéo I watch where placing keys is skipped / made x times faster so nobody would know if he's doing it right on his own.
