Thank you for your tips. I have a choir audition coming up on August 18, 2022. The choir director emailed me and provided me with the hymn that she wants me to sing. The hymn is Locus Iste by Paul Mealor. I have never heard this hymn before and it's all in Latin. Luckily, I hired a professional vocal teacher last year and have been preparing all year, which is helpful. The audition consists of four major parts to be tested. They are... Latin, vocal technique, chant and solfage. It's a professional choir, here in Philadelphia. I also sing in my parish church choir which is also a four part choir but on a smaller scale. The reason why I want to sing in the Philadelphia Arch Diocese Choir is because it's on a much larger scale and there is more commitment. Last year, I tried out for it and failed (I went in totally unprepared). After I failed, I hired a vocal teacher to learn sight singing, Latin pronunciation and vocal technique. It's been an amazing journey. Time is winding down and the audition is near. I'm praying that I pass but if not, I will try again next year as try outs are once a year. I live by the philosophy "you are never a failure until you stop trying." Even though I failed my last audition, it was an amazing experience. Thank you again for the tips!
@@oxoelfoxo I did not pass the choir audition which took place on 8/15/22. I didn't think that I was ready but wanted to try. The choir director told me what I needed to work on and so I am continuing to work on my vocal technique. This is a professional choir and their requirements are really tough. I've look at like a baseball game. So far I am 2-0. Next year I'll step up to the plate and knock the ball out of the park. I had to get a new vocal coach. The old vocal coach couldn't do it anymore because he stopped doing private lessons. He could only teach via ZOOM. Anyway, I found someone new who teaches live lessons. It's a whole different experience and much better for vocal training. I am still keeping up with sight singing lessons as well. It's very challenging so we shall see. I am not giving up and neither should you. Thank you for asking.
it's March break right now in my school and the auditions for choir are gonna start on the 2 or 3 day. I really hope I get in if I do I will definitely comment again to update
i participate in the TMEA all state choir auditions each year. i’m 2 years in so far and haven’t made region yet due to nerves. i’m pissed because i was 6th chair all district this past year. my prep has always been over the top and i always focus on the little details, but my performance nerves are always what kills my tone and quality. i’m hoping to advance to pre area / area next year so i can get used to sight reading as well. i can’t really choose the songs we audition, but i’ll use some of these tips! i’ve also got chamber choir auds in spring
I'm revisiting this video in 2024. I did not pass my choral audition in 2022. I just wasn't ready back then. That particular choir audition was extremely difficult. You cannot choose your own song. The song that she gives you is in Latin, so the correct pronunciation of Latin words is required. The piece was an 8 part choral piece with 1st and 2nd soprano parts. Then she tests you on sight singing in both the major and minor scales. You're not getting away with just sight singing a major scale. My vocal technique in addition to my confidence was not there. When it came time to sing the song in the 2022 audition, she sang 1st soprano part, and I sang 2nd soprano part. I couldn't stay on my part because my ear training was not developed enough. I kept jumping on her part instead of staying on my part. Two years later, I can stay on my part and sing that song. I would love to go back, but I am still learning the minor scales and she won't pass me if I don't pass the minor scales. To make matters worse, my vocal teacher quit on me suddenly. She didn't just quit. She ghosted me and moved to another state. I found out through Facebook. After 2 whole years of training with her, she ghosts me without an explanation. She took the cowards way out and ghosted me. Thank God I wasn't preparing for an audition. I'm not pissed because she quit, I'm angry because she ghosted me and moved. The teacher who I hired as her replacement only teaches vocal technique. She doesn’t teach choral singing 🤦♀️. I'm going to stick it out because my vowels are a mess and I need to work a bit more on vocal technique. Let me say this to anyone who is reading this. If you plan on learning to sight sing, vocal technique, ear training etc, by private vocal teacher, make sure that you have a back up teacher that you can take lessons with. I had 2 vocal teachers quit on me suddenly. The one vocal teacher got another job and stopped teaching private lessons and the other one pulled the plug and vanished. She didn't steal my money, she just vanished. Private vocal teachers are not under contract so they can pull the plug on you at any time. I don't want a degree in music, I just want to sing in the choir. It's a hobby, not a profession. At this point, I am 3/4 of the way there with sight singing. I was so close and the vocal teacher ghosts me. I am still fuming about it. I have start all over again with a new teacher who doesn't teach choral singing. She teaches vocal technique for classical singing. I can't just quit. I've invested a lot of time and money.
@@marissar9146 Drink a ton of water, and try to avoid soda. Definitely preserve your voice because using your voice too much can mess it up. If you've practiced, definitely do serious dynamics, they won't choose you if you sound like everyone else. Also, see this as something to be excited for, not to be afraid and nervous if, it'll build confidence. Last but most definitely not least, your rank doesn't define you. Our teachers told us our rank never defines us! Good luck!
Going into a annual day audition soon. I absolutely love singing and music but always got rejected from every audition i went i am nervous hope your advice helps it would be my dream come true. And to add to the nerves we are in exam sesson! 😢
