I can agree with everyone here when they say the quality of the video is amazing :) I know I'm late to the party as this video was published 1 year ago but just wanted to throw in my 2 cents. I do want to point out anki, while indeed extremely helpful to language learning, does not teach a language by itself. I actually always recommend anyone that starts using anki to never use premade decks and instead get the words from immersion (even if you know absolutely 0 words). At the end of the day, anki is a supplement to language learning and not a requirement, but not using a premade deck allows you to remember the context in which you found the word which is extremely important when learning a language... also, be sure when you're more advanced to drop anki altogether and just learn organically (through organic repetition).
@@theflower9264 just repetition through finding the vocab terms in the wild (no anki or SRS of any kind) trusting that you will just learn it by seeing it naturally without having something like SRS force repetition.
It worked!! I watch this last year and began using Anki. Now I have already finished the deck and I can confidently say that i can understand most daily Japanese conversation.

That's awesome to hear man! Welcome to the channel! Yea Anki can be used to remember anything, from German to even Medical Student notes. Give it a shot and see if it helps you learn German faster too!
Great editing! I used to use ankiapp (knockoff, but I didn't know) and now I switched to anki and downloaded core 2000 japanese, man is it great! 2000 words with sentence examples, kanji, hiragana, english, and voice recordings. I highly recommend it
I rarely write comments but this time I just had to. Your videos are great, well explained and you have a good voice to listen to. Keep up with what you’re doing, you’re doing it great.
I just started the "JouzuJuls Optimized Core 2K/6K" deck you provided, and because I assumed I would know a good amount of the starting vocabulary, I set the number of new cards to 30 for "today only". This somehow felt like the intended experience, as it began with 15 listening practice, and then the same 15 as reading practice, which honestly felt really effective. If this deck continues in that fashion (15 listening, 15 same-vocab-but reading), I'll be tempted to leave it at 30 for just this specific deck.
I'll start using Anki with your revised core 2K. Your content is a token of great generosity towards the learning community. I'll watch all the rest you put out, see you on other sections!
Damn, man I have to be honest. I watched one of your videos some time ago and really didn't pay much attention to what you said in it, I just kinda brushed it off thinking "oh another one of those videos". I started learning Japanese almost a year ago and it wasn't really a productive year but recently I got back into reading manga, watching some anime and listening to a ton of music made by Japanese artists after saying that I'm done with the language because of very small progress made. But after stumbling across one of your videos again and checking your channel out I think you gave me a push into a direction I wanted to go for some time now. Just completely dive in and immerse in Japanese, from youtube to games and etc. It is also how I learned English since it's not my native language. I just started watching playthroughs of games I liked and then playing them in English and even though I understood very, very little I was having a ton of fun and I think it's time to do the same with Japanese. Of course I have a bit of head start comparing to total beginners because some stuff I retained in my memory and unconsciously picked up while listening to music and watching anime lol. So once again, thank you very much man, I hope more people will find your channel because the tips you give and editing deserves more than there currently is. God bless you man!
Sorry it took a week to reply! I really appreciate you coming back and watching another one of my videos, and I'm extra glad you found them useful and motivational! Keep it up and hope to see your comments again down the line!

Speaking of learning, if anyone's interested in diving deeper into Japanese, I've been using apps like Ling and other online resource such as NHK Japanese to expand my knowledge. They've been incredibly helpful in making learning accessible and fun. Keep up the great work with these videos-I'm already looking forward to the next one!
I think If I started over I would do the JPLT tango decks due to them have an i + 1 structure and sentences that are comprehensible to your level, but change the card type to only show the target word on the front, with the whole sentence on the back. this stops you from just guessing the word based on the sentence, but still gives you some comprehensible input on the back.
I'd also recommend removing the interval times above the answer buttons, at least for me this caused unnecessary hesitation in failing very mature cards.
Yep, it's a preference thing. I personally don't care; if I fail the card then I fail it. If you hide the times though, it's a good idea to make it so the card auto graduates if the interval exceeds 1 year! Or change your mindset on it, failing the card doesn't actually mean failiure, it means you get a good chance of remembering the word better. It's a win all around!

Hey, awesome video and I'm glad to see you're still responding to comments! Would you recommending using your Anki deck in sequential or random insertion?
I don't comment often, but your video just screams quality! Too many Anki videos take too much time, or don't give you enough info about actually using the program, and the hotkeys are just the icing on the cake. Not to mention the good editing! Please don't stop making videos, cus you're great for first-timers to learning Japanese!
This is amazing! Thank you! This is the third video I have watched so far and from what I understand Aki helps build vocabulary but where can I learn grammar or rather the foundation of Japanese? It feels like Aki is something that's helpful to expand your knowledge but understanding and being able to read Kanji won't let me form my own sentences however I want or am I missing something?
This was such a fun video to watch plus it was insightful!! Great job!!! Also, that visual representation of the brain was relatable... 'And I took that personally'
Putting the color of the pitch on the front of the card is throwing me off. Isn't that just telling you the answer before you flip it? I assume it's to regularly associate the correct pitch to the word you're learning instead of drilling yourself on it? If you could explain your thoughts on that I would find it helpful. Great videos thank you.
Pitch isn't something to be memorized, it's something to be heard. If you can hear it, you can hear it- if you can't, you can't. So putting the color on the front won't make a difference if you can't hear it, and being able to hear it is not dependent on having it on the front. . Remember that Anki is not designed to help out acquire the language and thus output it, it is only there to assist in making input comprehensible. Having the colors on the front allows you to more easily associate what you're hearing to the expected pitch, this way when you hear that same word again used in immersion, you'll acquire it with more association to the correct pitch, thus leading to correct output.
@@JouzuJuls I implemented the colors into my deck before your reply and it felt helpful instantly. I dont spend time 'hearing' the wrong pitch in my head before I guessed the reading/definition, so it's removing all the incorrect information from the process. It also helped me hear the pitch much easier once I reveal the back of the card. Thanks for the reply.
I'm currently using Renshuu as my main, big source of vocab. Do you think I should finish with Renshuu first and then use Anki, or start using Anki anyway alongside Renshuu + everything else that I'm using to study and immerse?
I have never used Renshuu so I can't say anything about it, all I can say is probably watch this video and consider what attachments you can add onto Renshuu and whether it can do this: ruclips.net/video/45_TwPlhvGE/видео.html
Listen to Japanese music and memorize the kanji, memorize the song, and sing all the song at a karaoke but still study. Write poems, write songs, read a book, and talk to Japanese person.
I find the JouzuJuls Optimized deck flawed due to the sample sentences being full of vocabulary that hasn't been covered, and overly long in the beginning. It winds up feeling like the words exist in a vacuum, which is an issue for making connections.
When I started, I was actually doing 3 reviews per card. Now I've reduced it to only 2 (listen/read). It wouldn't make your session longer if you prioritized session length over words learned. Simply reduce the amount of words learned per day to reduce review time. Of course, if you feel that you have no problem with your listening/reading skills at all, you can just delete one of the options.
@@JouzuJuls thanks for a quick response. Your videos are awesome and I hope you’re feeling better! I’m doing the Core 2.3k deck and am only 121 words studied into it, so that’s good advice that I should prioritize study length over word count. That should help avoid burnout and make it manageable each day.
@@WarriorX16 Thank you, feeling better by the day :) And yes, prioritizing longevity and making sure you don't burn out is of the utmost importance. The only reason I was able to progress so quickly was because I was willing (and able) to spend more than 4 hours a day on Anki and get like 4+ hours of immersion on top of that every single day. Not everybody is willing to, or has the luxury to do that. So it's important to work at your own pace! Every step forward gets you closer to your goals, no matter how small the step is!
Arknights in the desktop.. AH I remember now, you're the guy who was doing Arknights back then lol. That's crazy. That was why you're just so familiar but I can't seem to wrap my finger about it.
I did some research into how the four Again | Hard | Good | Easy buttons at the bottom work and it seems that there's a percentage that changes how much time until you see that card again is, but it only gets changed with the Again and Hard buttons making it go up and Easy making it go down. So wouldn't this mean that if I only use Again and Good would have some adverse affects on efficiency because all you're ever doing in increasing cards intervals until you have "Learned" the card? It seems negligible but idk, worth mentioning I guess, and I just cant figure out how to handle this topic
It's just a lot simpler to go 2 buttons cuz you don't need to faff around with knowing when you should press hard or not. Since pressing it too much would put you into "ease hell". . Just go with "Good" for "i know it" and "again" for "idk". If you think you kinda know it but not really then you don't really know it. If you 100% know it but just get a little brain fart, then you know it- just "good" it. . If you really want to get into the specific details about how the Hard button screws with you, this video explains anki's algorithm: ruclips.net/video/lz60qTP2Gx0/видео.htmlsi=PGxF123e85pvlixB
@@JouzuJuls Super helpful thankyou! I'll stop overthinking and just DO it. So far on an 8 day streak. You're videos have been a huge help for me in understanding what I'm trying to do before I commit hours to doing it.
@@E-M-T Glad I was able to help! . One more thing to keep in mind is that if you're ever not sure whether you should "again" something or "good" something . Just press the "-" button to hide it for 1 day and show it tomorrow!
whenever i install the JouzuJuls Optimized Core 2K/6K deck and want to start learning, it always puts the listening cards first. Shouldn't it alternate between listening and reading? Does anyone else have that kind of problem?
My goodness what an excellent video. This video was sooooo useful. Imo one of the best tutorials for anything. You also had a great sense of humor as well. Subscribed. May you grow more.
This is so great! But my question is, can I do all these work on iPad too? I know it’s gonna be hard to tap on a big ass screen for a whole day but I will definitely try if that’s gonna help me!
I'm a very slow learner and I want to learn Turkish. I'm more of a reality escapist, so it's hard for me to have interest in things. what's the best way for someone like me who is way below average level ?. Also would appreciate if you could let me know the prompt that i can use to learn the language through chatgpt.
Anki has been great, but I feel like my review cards are gradually growing. I'm at 10 new cards a day and now at 18 to review, and I'm afraid that this is going to keep growing until I have something like 10 new cards a day and 60 cards to review, which is WAY too overwhelming. Am I doing something wrong, or is this actually the norm? I'm making sure to NEVER click on "easy" and "hard"; only "good" or "again". Any tips or advice? Thank you. Great videos, btw!
Thank you, Jouzu Juls for teaching and making the awesome deck. is it just me, or the audio doesn't work on ankidroid? I sync it through Anki desktop. the audio works in Anki desktop tho.
@@jump912 give it some time. If you're syncing for the first time on a different device, it will sync all the core stuff first (text), then take it's time to download the images and audio.
@@Starstreak170 And you assume that I can read Chinese? I don't blame you for the assumption, but kinda weird to just jump to the conclusion without double checking 😕
@@JouzuJuls You said in another video you studied Mandarin in school and I'm presuming you also know Cantonese as a Hong Konger. I have a friend from Hong Kong and they've told me about the school system there. So it's safe to assume you already knew Cantonese, English and Mandarin.
@@Starstreak170 If you've watched my videos showing how much I know you would also know my level of written Chinese is extremely know, to the point where I can't read menus, maps, books, newspapers or anything actually useful. It was a safe assumption, but ultimately wrong. I cannot read Chinese.
I have your core 2k/6k optimized jp vocab and I want to start today with learning vocab and I got a question the anser is in hiragana but above the hirgana anser is kanji I think. do I need to learn that as wel? for example by san
Hey there, sorry for the late reply, I've been busy studying for the JLPT but now I'm free! . Being consistent and honest with yourself about studying every day is the best part about Anki! Hope you're still sticking with it now!
I have a question. The Anki deck in your Google Docs (the one with red highlight) seems to be a core6k. Can I just study the first 2k words and still say that I have finished the Core2k? I don't really want to study Core6k yet.
You don't have to finish the Core 2K at all. The purpose of the Core deck is to get you started with at least something- so it honestly doesn't matter which core deck you use. As for why you don't have to finish them, the first ... say 500 or so words are so common, they probably make up 50-60% of anything/everything. The next 500 words after that probably add an additional 10-15%. Then the next 500 words add like maybe 5-8%. So once you can begin to understand stuff in the wild, it's time to start shifting away from core and start switching into mining. A mining video will be coming soon, please stick to the community if you'd like to request it sooner or get direct advice from the other peeps on the server: discord.gg/gW3gT499fF
Sorry for the late reply, I do about 100 reviews a day (that's not 100 new words, just 100 REVIEWS of cards I already know). . However, how many cards I review should have no impact on how many you do. I am almost 3 years into my journey so the rules are different for me. . For beginners, just focus on building a habit of using Anki every day and I would say keep the reviews under 30 mins if possible. You don't need to review a huge amount of cards in a short time, but rather focus on reviewing a small amount of cards for a looooong time, I'm talking every single day for the next few years. . Of course, start with manageable goals first. Get a 1 week streak, then 2 weeks, 1 month, 2 months, and just keep it up! . I'd recommend watching this video to prepare yourself for what's to come! ruclips.net/video/pq31RwtwpcM/видео.html
Yeesh! Just thinking about that default white solitary confinement chamber gives me chills. Here's how to escape the white room and make your Anki look like mine! ruclips.net/video/gIZW_OimI9M/видео.html
Hi, I’m new to this anki stuff so if I use the "JouzuJuls Optimized Core 2K/6K" do I need another deck for kanji ? Or is it a vocabulary + kanji deck ?
Look on the very bottom of the document listing out some of my curated decks (The document you downloaded the decl from). . There's an "RTK" deck there, which is (imo) the best deck for learning Kanji. . That being said, I don't recommend doing Kanji decks despite it being extremely effective. This is because it's extremely time consuming (took me 1.5 years), boring, and overall just feels like a chore. . Unless you have a very good reason to do it, imo it's not something you need to do.
@@JouzuJuls Thank you sensei ! I think that learning kanji is important if you want to write books or manga in japanese and that is exactly what I want to do.
@@R_ogua For sure man! Just don't forget to take the necessary breaks when doing RTK! Sometimes I just go a few weeks without learning any new kanji and I just review the ones I already know. I try to set a baseline of at least 1 kanji a day though. . The most important thing here is to not burn yourself out so you can still see yourself doing this at least 2 more years down the line!
Amazing video thank you! For some reason the pitch accent doesn't show up on the card, but I checked by clicking E and it's supposed to be there, any idea on how to fix that please?
Sorry for the bother but the pitch accents are not showing up on your decks :’) I have the pitch accent extension installed and in the edit section it shows the pitch accents but not on the actual card!
Hey there, sorry for the late reply, I've been busy studying for the JLPT but now I'm free! . To help you out, are you sure the graphs aren't showing and it's not just that you're using white theme with a white graph? Just want to double check that first.
How do I teach Anki what I already know? i downloaded your optimized 2k deck and it starts me from the very beginning of the deck, but I know at least 600 words already. Is there a way I can quickly filter out stuff I know without just "passing" cards from the very beginning?
Hey iam a begginers ,been learning japanease for about 3 monthes now on duolingo, yet i didnt learned the alphabet(only few ) is anki still useful in my case and should i keep using duolingo with anki?
Hello! The fact that you've been on Duolingo for 3 months and still haven't learned the alphabet proves that Duolingo does not work. . It is possible to learn both Hiragana and Katakana in a single day using this method: ruclips.net/video/c7N58Xrl7Jk/видео.html . I would recommend stopping Duolingo immediately and starting to do Anki instead. . Also, if you research how language learning works, you'll discover that Duolingo is actually very ineffective! . I recommend looking into the research by the linguist Dr. Stephen Krashen and "The Input Hypothesis": ruclips.net/video/NiTsduRreug/видео.html
If you know you're going on a holiday, preemptively lower the amount of cards you are doing several weeks beforehand. . There are some addons that allow you to stop it for a few days but I'm not sure how effective they are since Anki is designed to be used daily. If you stop it, it just wont do what its designed to do. . When I go on holidays I do my reviews anyway and I try to do them as fast as possible. . If you reduce the number of cards you're seeing just by not doing any new cards, it shouldn't be that hard.

Glad you enjoyed the video! Yes, only us mesh brains can relate to that imagery 😂😂
bunny girl senpai music at the end caught me off guard and I hit nostalgia for 2 straight hours XD
Jouzu Juls posted. Nice.

I've already been doing the Core 2000 for a few weeks already, and it has indeed helped a lot. Should I switch to your deck?
Thank you bro for sharing your effort hehe
You're very welcome!

This is honestly a good video damn
Thanks brother! Hope it helps!
6:50 thats so good XD
Yeah, I'm kinda interested in learning how to sp- KIRYU???
Listen to Japanese music and memorize the kanji, memorize the song, and sing all the song at a karaoke but still study. Write poems, write songs, read a book, and talk to Japanese person.
So immerse in other words
DUDE, YOU… YOU… congrats
I like your video. For unknown reasons, I could not import the DJT deck to my Anki app.
I find the JouzuJuls Optimized deck flawed due to the sample sentences being full of vocabulary that hasn't been covered, and overly long in the beginning. It winds up feeling like the words exist in a vacuum, which is an issue for making connections.
Thanks, chief.
Have you always done both listening and reading cards? I feel like that would make my session take so much longer.
@@WarriorX16 Thank you, feeling better by the day :)
And yes, prioritizing longevity and making sure you don't burn out is of the utmost importance.
I'm everywhere 😂😎
Thanks for showing me effective anki decks. Those ive been looking at had either to much complicated words (so not so useful) or costed money :´)
@@E-M-T Glad I was able to help!
.
One more thing to keep in mind is that if you're ever not sure whether you should "again" something or "good" something
.
Anki will always play one side of the cards first. It's not a problem.
I've only been using 'Hard' and 'Good' for the past 18 days, at 30 cards a day. Is it over for me?
My goodness what an excellent video. This video was sooooo useful. Imo one of the best tutorials for anything. You also had a great sense of humor as well. Subscribed. May you grow more.
This is so great! But my question is, can I do all these work on iPad too? I know it’s gonna be hard to tap on a big ass screen for a whole day but I will definitely try if that’s gonna help me!
I use an iPad with my apple pen to practice on Anki every day! The only thing is that it’s $25 for mobile but it is SO worth it!
@@JouzuJuls ah you are right. I just have to wait for it to fully sync. Thanks!
Great video! I think there's an add-on in Anki that auto suspends cards after they reach a certain threshold but I don't remember what it's called
You don't actually need an add-on for that, it's an in house feature (I think). I just didn't mention it cuz I don't use it.
You already knew Hanzi , so that was a massive head start over other learners.
But what makes you think I know Hanzi 🤔
@@JouzuJuls You're from Hong Kong, right?

Thanks for the efforts.
I've question on anki
How to change a written deck into audio deck ?
You'll have to mess with the "note options" and "fields". I might make a quick video on this tomorrow.
How many new cards do you usually do per day?

@@JouzuJuls Thank you, you're a life saver!
The graph is probably white and you are probably on light mode. Either switch the color of the graph to black or switch your Anki to dark mode.
Sorry for the bother but the pitch accents are not showing up on your decks :’) I have the pitch accent extension installed and in the edit section it shows the pitch accents but not on the actual card!
Hey there, sorry for the late reply, I've been busy studying for the JLPT but now I'm free!

Hello! The fact that you've been on Duolingo for 3 months and still haven't learned the alphabet proves that Duolingo does not work.
.
It is possible to learn both Hiragana and Katakana in a single day using this method: ruclips.net/video/c7N58Xrl7Jk/видео.html
.
@@JouzuJuls yes but no like i can learn the alphabet with duolingo but i didn't,i could focus on it but it felt a bit boring
@@the_shinoby8573 There is no reason to use Duolingo unless you prefer the illusion of learning languages rather than actually learning languages.
@@JouzuJuls well then thanks for your help!
Hello, I have a question. What if I am going on holidays and won't be able to do anki for few days, can I somehow stop it?
If you know you're going on a holiday, preemptively lower the amount of cards you are doing several weeks beforehand.
.
There are some addons that allow you to stop it for a few days but I'm not sure how effective they are since Anki is designed to be used daily. If you stop it, it just wont do what its designed to do.
.
When I go on holidays I do my reviews anyway and I try to do them as fast as possible.
.
If you reduce the number of cards you're seeing just by not doing any new cards, it shouldn't be that hard.
