I feel like I missed something in my discussion of Hotaro's character/ just didn't quite do it justice. His "gray"-ness really was fascinating to me from the start. Because he's not arrogant about it in any way. He doesn't look down on people who live life more enthusiastically. In fact, he admits pretty early on that he envies people like that. By the time I got to the end, it really made him feel like the other side to Satoshi's coin. That they were likely dealing with the exact same issue-- he avoids putting himself out there/ getting properly invested in anything because he doesn't want to open himself up to being hurt... They just took two different approaches to dealing with that fear.
