So the techniques is not the only IMP thing bcz every1 can learn the technique even men. but that give the oriental dance its magic is the feeling of the music. let's the music guide you & make you move or too express ur feeling
surely baladi must tell a story. especially if the music has words. just like in any other country there are word in songs so u must express the emotion of the words.

I never heard Suraya Hilal acclaiming her style to be the authentic one, it`s just like Raks Nensimilia explains rooted in Egyptian rural folk with a touch of contemporary and more modern style... to me sober, elegant, beautifull and most of all innovatig. And hoewer more contemt in the expression it doesn't lack it at all.. this doesn't mean other styles aren't beautifull too:)

She comes obviously from the Suraya Hilal school. They "sell" their own egyptian dance, they call "Raqs Sharqi" (which means Dance from East). Surayya Hilal has developed her own dance style, which she acclaims to be the "real" or "authentic" dance. All her students have her style. The expression of joy is wanted to be limited, and the Suraya Hilal school also spreads the attitude, that the costume should be different from the ones, that cabaret dancers wear.
yeah, a lot of my egyptian friends said it's not egyptian at all. And it isn't, it's baladi inspired by Suraya Hilal style, although she's egyptian too. But she developed her own style and its sooo hard. Totally different from what dancers in egypt dance i agree.
I have had the pleasure of doing a couple of workshops with her in London, I love this and I love beledi, I don't like doing tricks with my belly either, but if you don't other modern dancers think you can't dance, I personally don't care. I love the dance and I will keep on dancing it. I would like the name of this piece please if you know it.
about the dress .. there are types of bellydancing styles ... the armor bra is like more of a "city" or civilized styl, more like modern... this one is more "Bedouin-sh" style they dance barefoot with ankle bracelet and all that, i like both styles if u ask me :p but this one is harder to achieve with attitude but she did a good job.
@latanyasdance I practice RSS and the RSS it is indeed a different style of Raqs Sharqi developed by Suraya Hilal up until end of the 90's circa and it is again rooted in Egyptian folk dance with a contemporary dance influence (rather than a classical or cabaret influence which we find in the other styles included the ones developed in Egypt). Dance is alive and stays as such only by its ability to transform and adapt to time, people and places.
I'm not sure about the Hilal school: she's not dressed the 'Hilal Dance' way and she uses to many isolations in her dance. I'd say she has Raqs Sharqui Society style: this is a British association approching this beautiful dance searching grounded and integrated body. Many different styles but the same passion :-)

What it is claimed is that the style is rooted in Egyptian rural folk dances (es distunguidhed from folkloristic) Suraya Hilal has now developed her own dance style which is copyrighted under her name and she likes to list it among contemporary dances rather than "sell" it as you say as a different style of Raqs Sharqi.
@vampySARAH also in egypt at least it is actually illegal to bellydance in public with your midriff exposed... i know this isn't in egypt, but just a thought, idk.
baladi means country. how people dance for themself when they celebrate. When they're having FUN. Its not a sport its a way of expressing yourself. Now its turned in to a sport and the dance becomes cold and dead. I really don't care for sitting down and watch people do tricks with their belly.

What I see is against my own understanding and the students that come to my classes after years of studying Suraya Hilal Style are overwhelmed by the freedom of movement and emotions they may experience by learning the bellydance I teach (I have studied with egyptian teachers in Egypt, was a student of Mahmoud Reda, Raqia Hassan, Aida Nour, Mona El Said etc etc.).
@nensimilia NONE of my teachers EVER tried to convince me that HIS dance is the REAL dance, and other forms therefore are to be rejected! My teachers were the most humble and dedicated people, real artists and they showed me their soul. Suraya Hilal's reputation is the reputation of a guru and diva and she has to take responsibility for that- NOT ME.
@latanyasdance All the people you mention I respect and appreciate their work, however they are all influenced by either classical ballet or cabaret or both, (this is not an offense, it is only a constatation, they will tell you this as well) While RSS and Hilal Dance are more influenced by contemporary dance and some other disciplines. Everyone does what suites them best. It's not a style war or a style competition. I am also reading you talk about "sect" gosh :). Peace
@marinaaurora i disagree with you there. she only has the idea of baladi style. ignore her face and pay attention to her body. it is almost as if it is to heavy for her, she is very stiff. i noticed this is the biggest issue with a lot of dancers. i mean look at suheir zaki, her body is as light as air. it's what makes belly dance, belly dance. feel me? this girls problem is her movements aren't coming through as she intends them to and because of that it shows no connection to the music.
She dances quite well I think, but there is no expression, she does not feel the music and that makes her dance not very exciting and (for egyptian people I think) clown-looking.

Definately not Egyptian - I thought Hilal trained, is the head veil a clue............. But very definately a Western interpretation from someone who is thnking of themselves as a dancer rather than interpreting the music
This costume is giving a cultural indication of being folkloric yet the movements are largely cabaret. This dance could be interpreted as offensive. Too bad as she is otherwise a talented dancer

What I like: music, costume, technique, what lacks: feeling and improvisation. This is choreography, and I prefer an ashra baladi to be improvised ;-)

you mean she is too controlled, but not stiff, I would say. You mean, she could be more loose?
