Tough decision. The flathead sounds classic, but a modern engine would make it a more reliable driver. I would switch over to 12 volt. You kept your Mercury original. Have fun with this one!
I was surprised it started so easy but I agree if I do plan on driving this on the powertour I feel like I would have to upgrade the points to electronic ignition and 12 volts even then I not sure it would make the trip. Sitting in traffic in 90 to 100 degree heat is hard on most of the older cars. But I have other options for my longer trips so I will have to think on this a bit.
... Keep the flathead, pal ... I've had three flatheads, all '53's , a '53 Ford Customline V8, a '53 Studebaker Champion inline six, and currently a '53 Dodge Regent 230-6 flathead ... So, you can see, I'm a bit biased 😂 Best regards, from the mountains of central California
Yes, leave the flathead in it. I would prefer keeping the 6 volt; previous owner changed my '47 over to 12 volt system. Dual brake master cylinder and seat belts are the only other upgrades done to my classic.

Leave the flat head in it, always find away to see if you can’t get some go fast parts on that flat head!

I mean… if it’s not broken don’t fix it. Right?
