There is an old movie called The Last Days Of Frank and Jesse James. It has Johnny Cash, David Allen Coe and a bunch of other old outlaw country singers
My name is Aaron Bud Heatherly and back thrpugh my fathers bloodline o descend from his bloodline haha..i live in southern missouri..glad to know ya friend..
Best version of this song was from the movie “I shot Jesse James” starring John Ireland as Robert Ford. A minstrel walks into the saloon where Ford buys him a drink to sing a song with the minstrel not knowing he was Robert Ford. Great acting 😅
My grandfather told me a story. His grandparents or great-grandparents (I forget which) took in a stranger one evening to stay with them,(as was a common hospitality in the 1800's) but when morning came, it was apparent that the stranger had quickly left during the night. They never heard from him again. Not too long after the stranger's visit, either the Texas Rangers or some policing force came into the town my grandfather's grandparents lived in and reported that Jesse James was said to have recently been seen in the town. They always wondered whether that stranger they took in could have possibly been Jesse James. I believe this mysterious event occured either in the 1870's or early 1880's.
He was like the definition of an outlaw honestly (I love the Jesse James story, just being honest) also I believe he rode into town with a white flag trying to surrender but was shot in the chest so in a way was forced to be an outlaw but he was one regardless
from what I've read and heard Jesse James was a mercenary/partizan that fought for the south but he never cared for slavery he mostly did it for the money then towards the end of the civil war he became an outlaw/folk hero of that time period
One of my favorite songs. Jesse James was right. If Pinkerton did to my family what they did to the James' family, then I would have done the same thing as Jesse. George Vreeland Hill
The famous Robber was killed by Robert a member of Jessie's gang. He was only 34years old and had 2 children. They call him Robin Hood of the West . . But there is no Historical evidence that he and his gang shared any loot from their robberies with anyone outside their close relatives. Thanks for this memorable ...F
Jesse and Frank James use to stay in a little log house on my great grandfathers farm in East Tn. They ate breakfast lunch and supper with the Shaw family which was all in the Confederate army also which was part of my family
Jamez Shaw I'm a relative from Kearney, MO. I know the real history passed down from generations. If you haven't been to the James farm in Kearney I would recommend it. My father is the president of the farm. We do tours and cap and ball shooting 4 times a year. If you're interested just get on the JJfarm website. Much respect for your family and anyone with a heart and a brain would do the same. Take care JG
I love that this version is more historically accurate compared to the original lyrics "He stole from the rich and he gave too the poor..." There is no evidence of him actually doing so even though he claimed himself to be a robinhood figure. "Three children they were brave." Jessie only had two children which this version corrects.
Jesse James married his cousin Zee Cole - they were cousins thru his mothers side of the family. They had two childern that lived to adulthood. Jesse Jr. and Mary were the childerns names both very young when thier father was murdered. Not sure what happened to Mary but Jesse Jr married had had childern, not sure if there are DIRECT descendants today - could be, but there are distant realitives to be sure. 132 years is not that long in the sceem of things
These are completely different lyrics from the usual ones, which is not a bad thing. There are many different versions. The James Gang were the last Confederate soldiers.
I recorded the movie on Encore Westerns. It was very good even if it played with history. At 1:37, the "Goodbye, Bob" was the last line of the movie, It played around with historical license to put Frank at the scene of Bob Ford's murder in 1892 and have Ford's eventual murderer beat him to the punch (I don't know if Frank ever did try to settle the score with Ford in the 10 years after Jesse's killing.)

this song is from the movie. with Johnny Cash an Kris Kristofferson.. The last days of Frank an Jessy James... Robert Ford shot him in the back of the head... in the movie of course.
Does anyone know if this was only recorded for the movie scenes or did it ever appear on any of Cash' s albums? This was my favorite movie as a child watched and recorded it the night it premiered on CBS. I watched that VHS tape so many times the tape finally broke. To this day, other than Brad Pitt I think Kristofferson is the best and most accurate portrayal of Jesse James
@@RO8s Yes, he did "Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid" is a great movie. But Kristofferson also played "Jesse James" in a TV movie called "The Last Days Of Frank And Jesse James". Johnny Cash plays Frank James and Willie Nelson plays a small but important role. I believe it came out around 1985 or 86 as a made for TV movie of the week. This was right around the time they were all doing The Highwaymen together. They also made a not so great remake of Stagecoach around the same time for the same TV network.
I understand there's something special about the outlaw life and identification. I was wondering if all of the people who praise Jesse James actually want the confederates back and the industry out of the southern states, because that's actually what he was fighting for
Actually slavery was the last thing out of 4 reasons to have civil war they even took land that good farmers had left to slaves Missouri becoming a state made it uneven they considered California's distance to far to really interfere with DCs political wants yes slavery was bad but they'd already been slaves to neighboring tribes (just like in previous centuries with every other cultures Africa was late in different ways). It was more of way for taxation and pushing a state to certain political party more federal vs state the union is betrayed in movies as good when they raped, murdered, stole and burned farms all the same.... It's pretty ironic then they divided up land taxing farmers to death
But did he shoot Jesse? There is evidence that Jesse, when he found out how far his legend reached decided to stage his death and escape. There is now much evidence proving it to be true. Especially when relatives talk about the 1920's about an old man they called John who looked like Jesse.
Craig Hollister you are right I was excited to find what I thought was this soundtrack ! Someone sent the record to me years ago and Boy oh boy am I disappointed! oh well
What Jesse did was a sort of pay back. Just think of all wrong the Union army etc did to the South. If anything Jesse James was a freedom fighter who didnt surrender in 1865.
rockake Not really. The war ended and Jesse took to doing what his skills translated to naturally. Killing and stealing, like he did as a bushwhacker in the Confederate army. It didnt help that Frank convinced him it was right even if it wasnt.
