Great voice, great song, still touching after more than 50 years, - and, sad to say, more up-to-date than ever.

Sensational melody -- and lyrics that could adapt to today's societal issues.

Even though this song was released in the mid sixties, it carries a higher level of awareness now than when it was released. Let them be who they want to be. Why do so called 'experts' try to ram their doctine down other people's throats. What happens when you are in your formative years and continually get told you should be someone else or whatever. These memories stick. Then what happens when they go through all the drama and psychological distress to suddenly realise it not wht you wanted but it's too late to change back. What's the outcome? Mental collapse, Self ending, uncontrolled anger and depression, violence, hatred, or what?

I was born in 1971, by 1977 it was obvious I was more geek/nerd than a southwestern farm town could handle. My mom always said I reminded her of this song.

I heard this when I was in elementary school Years later I learned the artist and song. It made a big impression on my 10 year old mind.

Whn I first went overseas in mid/late 70s, I was warned that I had to have a haircut otherwise I would be targeted by Singapore authories. Back then I had long hair, which was on my passport photo. PS I would get teased about my hair from adults and other boys, but funny enough a number of the girls were envious of the natural hair colour to te fact I always kept it neatly combed and washed. The colours went from peroxide blonde to straw blond to light brown through to auburn. I lived on the coast with lots of sunlight. Now it's a mid brown with just a wisp of gray at the temples at 72 Years old.

This song undoubtedly influenced young Janis Ian's protest hit (against racial intolerance) "Society's Child" two years later. So sad to have lost brilliant vocalist Jody Miller last month.

After all these years, I still have no idea as to what this song is about.

Weren't around back in the 60's, huh, I guess. Back then I had an encounter while driving in the great State of Wyoming and the battery cable of my car came loose. Around midnight it was, and all things stopped for me, so to speak, then and there. All this about fifty miles away from civilization all around me; not a town in sight. Everything pitch black out there. I was out of my car with the hood up looking the engine over when up came another car with a beer swilling cowboy with his date in tow. Must of been coming from a howdown some where, going back home or so. They drove by and slowed down for a second, saw my longer hair than theirs and the funny clothes, and drove off leaving me out there in the middle of nowhere. Guess I was lucky. At least they allowed me to be as they didn't stop to give me a haircut and thankfully it wasn't during the wintertime. Love the Land of the Free; free to believe what you want to believe, as long as you don't hurt no one.

It's a song about people who are individuals who aren't afraid to Express themselves and who aren't accepted by their peers.

"People are gonna talk to you and talk to you and Talk To You about individual freedom but they see a free individual, it's gonna scare 'em. It doesn't make 'em running scared. Nope.......it makes 'em dangerous. " - George Hanson,1969

About ‘long’ hair and dressing in style - and getting your ass kicked for it, 1965 style. Not everybody loved the Beatles. Far from it. Boys WERE banned from school and more than just picked on. I was just 10, but I remember it well.
