  • Hey all! This is my first direct comparison between Rebelle and Artrage for Digital Oil Painting! In this session I demo painting the same reference image in each software... with the goal of giving you an apples to apples comparison of the two best digital painting platforms available. The Oil Painting feature in Rebelle 4 is new and it is fantastic. Artrage is the long standing champion of digital oil painting... so this face off will be a great way to examine the quality of the two programs. Spoilers ahead: I love them both.
Please let me know what painting you prefer!?
Also, please let me know what kind of videos you would like to see in the future!
    Best wishes and happy painting!

got to admit, I'm loving the oils in Rebelle, if I had to choose one I'd pick Rebelle, watercolour, pencils, oils, for a one stop programme, it's outstanding. Won't be going back to Painter. Way too pricey for what it does...not very well.

Thanks for this great video that highlights the user interface strengths for oil brushes in Rebelle and Artrage! I too am a fan of the paint & blend options for each brush. FYI, to increase the size range on your custom brush, in the brush engine you can increase the Shape / Maximum Size (px) to a larger number. You can still adjust the size on the Tool Tile as you paint, but the range available to you will be larger.

I know I'm late to this… and thanks for a very interesting video. I've got an unusual perspective. I was an art major academically, but I was also lead programmer on a very early and groundbreaking PC paint system in the late '80s to mid '90s - even before Photoshop existed. It was called 'Lumena' and cost several thousand dollars - and the hardware was even more costly: you'd spend about $20K for a whole system capable of doing paint. In fact, one of my colleagues worked on Painter back when it was being developed by Fractal Design, and I paid close attention to the early development of that system. After about 8 years of developing paint tools I went on to other kinds of software development and graphics work… but just recently got interested in picking up digital paint again recreationally… and I've been picking up a bunch of tools to check out what's out there, both on the Mac and the iPad. It's very interesting to see how the tools have matured while my attention was elsewhere.
Rebelle continues to change brushstrokes after you make them, but that's closely tracking how watercolors work in the real world: and their fluid dynamics modeling is astonishing. I can understand why there are a lot of videos showing off their dripping paint to illustrate how realistic their watercolors are, but I don't really expect that it's how people will actually paint with it most of the time. However, the way strokes blend into each other and bloom?

    • @DanielIbanez
      @DanielIbanez  3 года назад +1

That is a remarkable and rich post! Thank you. I really enjoy getting your perspective on all of this! Thank you for all of those insights. Awesome.
I haven't tried all of the software you mentioned, but for the options I have tried, I agree with you. Working in Realistic does get old quickly (in large part due to its skeuomorphic interface and limited brush options for oils). That said, I do enjoy drawing in that program. Each one has little bits of magic that make them enjoyable...
*I find that I keep coming back to Photoshop, Rebelle, and Artrage. And the overall package that Rebelle offers is amazing.

Good video Daniel I. I personally recommend owning both at this point in time as both have their own advantages. If you can only afford 1, go Rebelle. There's more to Rebelle, if you use more than just oils, as I do.
Rebelle just keeps getting better (leaps & bounds better) with each edition. Fyi... Rebelle only costs 50 to upgrade, even if you skip an edition.
I don't remember how Artrage charges for new editions, so please forgive me.

I have been watching your videos since lately to get back on my Artrage Painting hobby on desktop and now on iPad Pro too. Your videos and your paintings inspire me a great deal ! As profession, practicing architecture since the last 40 years, couldn't find enough time for my hobby. At 65, now, easing a little on my profession and jumping to my hobbies. I just have a simple question ! In this video, in Artrage, with the standard Oil Brush set to rectangular aspect, I saw the brush rotating, reorienting to the angle of the brush. This was a default in Artrage Version 2. But disappeared from Artrage 4 to its present Artrage 6 too. I'm still using my old Wacom Graphire Pen Tablet (8-1/2 x 6-1/2 inch) pressure levels 512 only, bought 13 years back, still working very fine. From Artrage 4 to Artage 6, the standard oil brush does not rotate like it was in Artrage 2. Same tablet. I tried out all settings in my Tablet settings. No, does not work. Does not work with Apple Pencil on iPad Pro in Artrage Vitae too. How is it that your are able to make it rotate in Artrage 6?. May be because of some very superior Tablet and Pen ? Please help. Artrage Forums could not give me a solution. Thanking you in advance.

Since I transitioned from traditional physical oil painting on canvas & water colors, to digital later, I'm also quite keen on traditional Natural Media Painting software. Your videos inspired me into getting Rebelle too! Thanking you once again sir !

I use Corel Painter 2020 and love it, but I've been using their PSP and Painter essentials for years. I actually got it on humble bundle really cheap around 30 bucks. I love sketchbook pro though. It's been my go to art program for years before now. I love doing traditional art but don't always have the materials to do more or learn more with painting. Would you say that either art rage or rebelle could actually help you learn how to do real traditional painting as well? I do watercolors, and acrylic although I've never been good at it. I can't use oil paints because we have a bird and they will kill birds if you paint around them. I would just love to learn how to do it and be able to translate that over to traditional if I ever get that chance.

Thank you! I love hearing about what works for other artists. Your question is a really good one, and I don't know... I think it definitely would help with paint application, and familiarizing the order of steps in the process... Including how to simplify, look for big shapes, etc. All of that is a real benefit and translates straight across. I think mixing colors, and dealing with how muddy and messy oils can get might not be so direct and would still take some getting used to. I do see real benefits though... Man, good question

(You can do an easy Google search for it.) Frankly, the drippy, super-soft WC technique I see so often lauded in Rebelle is just NOT what I am looking for! Incidentally, I recently watched a WC demo in Photoshop that blew me away. However, this was for a conceptual, character-based illustration and not a "painting" _per se._ Very nice paintings *_here,_* btw, both of them! FYI #2... I've used Painter (Corel Painter) for over 25 years & while it is still very good software & has been a staple for decades as a premier digital painting software, Corel is destroying Painter & Painter Essentials.
It is expensive. More importantly though,, general support & especially "tablet support is ABYSMAL." Painter no longer works with the Surface line (Pro 7 & Book 3, upcoming Pro 8, Book 4, Studio 3, some Wacom Tablets, & other tablet brands & digitizers).
Corel has been aware of these issues throughout the whole 2020 edition & it continues with their 2021 edition, yet they continue to unlawfully claim it works. Be sure to try their trial version if you have doubts, things are this bad with Corel Painter & Essentials.
I can't in good conscience, even recommend their upgrade, which is also expensive but, would be fair considering you OWN the software & its painting engine is faster & more responsive these days.
    Buyer beware!

Hi, also like digital mediums and trying to transition to digital. I’m trying rebelle 4 and can’t seem to find a way to Break paint strokes suck as with a palette knife for painting mountains. Do you know how to do this? I also tried it in Art Rage but the palette knifes aren’t loaded and only spread existing paint. What am I doing wrong here. Breaking paint is such a basic find toon in real painting I’d have to imagine there is a way to do it

That is a great question. I will look into it. *One thing: You can set the palette knife to hold paint and do painting with the knife. I just posted a video of that last night!

I probably could have spent more time on the Artrage painting... I do think artrage oils are generally better. I went for a real choppy look with that one.

I am drawing with Artrage. But the greasy brush cursor does not rotate in drawing strokes. Stays fixed. How can I do that?
