    Lyrics:
    I dove into the dark
And I swear I almost drowned
But I could see the stars looking up as I was sinking down
    All is well
    All is well
    Heaven hell wherever I go
All is well in my soul
    All is well
Now I’ve landed in the light
And my eyes can finally see
    The darkness in my mind
Was the path to set my spirit free
    All is well
    All is well
    Heaven hell wherever I go
All is well in my soul
    All is well
It’s the smoke it’s the flame
It’s the ash and it’s the rain
It’s the burn and wash away
It’s the change and it’s the same
    All is well
    All is well
Heaven hell wherever I go all is well
Time will tell and I will know
All is well in my soul
    All is well
    Heaven hell wherever I go
All is well in my soul
    All is well

I think Avi writes beautifully. You can read his lyrics as poetry and they stand alone. His vocals are always sensitive to those lyrics and combined with the music he writes the whole composition and performance seem effortless.

Agreed! You can hear it as well - both emotion and technique combined is a powerful force in music.

As someone who has seen Avi sing this in concert, I would say that this song is even more emotional in a live setting. I love your interpretation and commentary. His "text painting" is less word-specific, but it really grabs hold of your emotions, which I love about his songwriting style.

Thank you this was fascinating for someone who knows very little about music but enjoys it. For me, this song radiates light and happiness. Avi has been through some very dark times and I believe this is a sort of closure and him finally arriving at a good place. For more of his music I would suggest “When I’m A Fool”, also from the Sunset recordings, and “Change On The Rise”.

Love to hear you go so in depth with your analysis, very interesting. This is actually the third version he’s done of this song. The “official” one, the one released on his album Floating on a dream, is a duet with lots of harmonies. The secon one is a live recording for 7Layers, just him and a guitar in a church (absolutely gorgeous!) and this third one was part of the Sunset Live series, four of the songs from the album was rearranged and performed with the full band. Would be fun to see you react to and compare the different versions!
I hope you do more of Avi’s work, he’s brilliant and use a lot of harmonies and layers!

Thank you! I have seen the other versions floating around and felt drawn to this one since it was specifically recorded live - it would be interesting to compare the versions, possibly in a shorter format since it would be more of a compare/contrast instead of a full analysis of the entire piece.
      Thanks!

Love your format. A "reaction" is okay, but when the creator adds information, it helps me "hear" things differently. I do think it's true...you can often get more attention with a whisper than a shout. He didn't need to beat us over the head, the softness makes us listen harder. And what a great description: "floating", considering the name of the album is Floating on a Dream. Would love to see more Avi :)

This was a refreshing reaction/evaluation of this song, coming from a person whose musical knowledge gives new perspective on my personal favorite singer/songwriter. While I'm sure Avi had the biggest hand in this arrangement, there was also the influence of the album's producer, Shooter Jennings (seen in the video on the organ). Avi did have composition and arranging as his minor in college (opera and classical voice being his major), and subsequently he's worked with arrangers like Ben Bram and Rob Dietz (with whom he co-founded the A Cappella Academy in 2014 (the annual 10-day intensive Summer music camp for 12 to 18-year-olds from around the world)). Add to all of that his self-ascribed perfectionism, and you have this piece. (I would recommend you check out my favorite version of "All Is Well" (7 Layers Sessions) which was filmed in a church in Utrecht, Netherlands during his European tour in early 2022. Just him, his guitar, and the acoustics of the building. It's a very different take on the song, which Avi loves to do, often having 1 or 2 "covers" of his own music.

This was very interesting. I am not a professional musician, but have a history in piano, trumpet and voice. What I don't have is music theory, so this is interesting to me. My favorite of the Sunset Sound recordings is When I'm a Fool. It has more of the instruments, so might not be fitting for your format, but it's definitely worth a listen on your own.

Thank you for this learned explanation of the musicality of this song. But isn't music ultimately about what it makes you feel? Avi writes his songs from the heart not the brain and that's how they are best heard.

    • @bass2yang
      @bass2yang  Год назад +5

The heart and brain must work together, which is why Avi is able to write the songs in such a way that moves us. Consequently, this is what I feel when I listen to the music - it's just how my mind functions when I listen to music.
Ask a contractor how a house makes them feel when they walk in it and they'll talk to you about the structure, the walls, the material, the shape, and the color/materials before they see the furnishings. Both are important, of course.
      Thanks!

Well I do say "arpeggioing" to translate "arpeggiando" (just we italians do not pronounce that "i" in arpeggio since it's just a diacritic sign meaning the "gg" is to be pronounced like badge-judge and not like bag-gear)

captivating analysis! when you have a moment, may I ask what 'voice leading' refers to? thanks for making this; as someone who recently began development as a bass vocalist, I found it to be a timely cue to shift towards also focusing on these more compositional elements. :)

    • @bass2yang
      @bass2yang  Год назад +2

Sure thing! Voice leading is where the line of the melody either moves up or down, or stays on the same note based on the chord (and sometimes moving away from the chord). Typically, you find it in harmonies, even though it is present in the melody. If it moves up, there will be an inclination to move back down and vice versa. Or, if it stays the same, it will eventually need to move (up or down) or it will lose part of its "melody" and feel like harmony, bass part, etc. Though, even with one note, the "melody" can still be maintained if there are interesting rhythmic ideas (check out One Note Samba).
      Thanks!

    • @mogaldeatasugubeata
      @mogaldeatasugubeata Год назад +1

@@bass2yang cool, I'll have to experiment with this soon over a chord. i read this as though melody has its own laws of gravity and physics acting upon it as it 'flies'. thanks!

If you know much about Avi, you know he has had a real issue with anxiety and depression.
Adding to that, he took a lot of ridicule in school for being Jewish.
Heaven means his good days and Hell means his bad days.
He co-wrote this song with Joy Williams and the first recording of it was with the two of them. I personally did not like that as Joy no longer has strength of voice and Avi had to make his voice much gentler and while I love when his voice is tender, I thought he had to hold back too much.
Then, in his spring/early summer European tour, he recorded this in an ancient church chapel and it was as if the acoustics of that 100's of years old chapel were made just for His voice. That recording is my favorite.
Later he and Shooter Jennings, (son of Waylon and Jessie Coulter) met and Shooter came to Avi's cabin to discuss "reimagining." the song and a few others at Shooters Studio.
He recently returned to his cabin in Tennessee from spending time at his childhood home with his family holiday get togethers.
He said he is already writing again and all of his fans are anxiously awaiting releases of words in sections until the recording is read to release.
    Great reaction!
