I got a used red-letter version of this Bible for only about 3 US dollars here in India. The quality is truly good. The paper is even better than my Cambridge Clarion.
I love the paper in that Bible. I was looking through my Father’s RSV from 1961 and there was absolutely no ghosting whatsoever. Even his markings didn’t bleed through and he didn’t use any special pens or highlighters just whatever he had handy. Thank you for sharing.
Good video, Mark. There's something uniquely comforting about seeing an old Bible that was so obviously used and appreciated, and yet is still intact and beautiful.
Yes that makes it extra special to me. It wasn’t his only Bible but I have most of his Bibles and they were all well used and well thumbed! God bless bro
Wow! That’s really cool! I have my (former) pastors TCR Bible, it has been marked in, and preached out of for 48+ years. It’s pretty cool. And I prefer the Kirkbride more than the Zondervan. But it’s pretty cool! Either or company! (But I prefer Kirkbride LOL)
I won a bid at eBay on this Kirkbride TCR: the 1964 4th Ed. KJV for only $35 including shipping. It’s burgundy genuine leather, & is in very good condition, with no markings or highlighting; just a person’s name engraved on the front & a couple of pages yellowed on the edges. I had been looking at TCRs, both new & used, & they’re pricey. I just happened upon the one I bought when there were only 18 minutes left on the bidding, with 2 other bids & 8 other people watching it. The pictures of it look fantastic, & I can’t wait to get it. It’s almost as old as I am! 😂 I’m also being gifted a NASB Kirkbride TCR, & it’s supposed to get here tomorrow. It also has a person’s name engraved on the front. I don’t know anything else about it, but it’s free, & I feel blessed to get it.
Wow! 😣😱 I have been searching and searching for a 1964 Thompson Chain Bible, for quite sometime now. They are by far, way better than today’s standards! Just think of all that Love from your grandpas hands being on that Bible. Someday, I’m sure you will be Blessed with this Bible too! I could hear the crackle of the pages! Fantastic! I’m with you, Brother, why can’t they bring their standards back up to this gorgeous Bible! Thank you for sharing this review! I’ve fallen in Love with it! 😍🙏📖💖✝️
Ha! Glad you enjoyed the sound element, I actually think the iPhone mic picks those sounds up better than a lapel or shotgun mic! It’s lovely and so much better than the modern production. So happy with it! Hopefully you will find one soon too! God bless sister
I have a 1964 TCR KJV Bible. Yes, mine is genuine leather. And I love mine as well. I don't use it any more as I keep it as nice as possible. I got it when I was in Bible college back in 1981-1983. From what I understand the older TCRs had some broken chains and the newer ones have now fixed and filled in those broken chains. I current;y use a NASB and ESV TCRs. Great video. Thanks for sharing with us.
Oh my heart cries out. My Bible was misplaces, (rather stolen) and it is the very same as Your. The 1964 edition, It was given to me as a Christmas present 25 December 1980. Oh it was so marked up and I actually had to rebind it many years ago, and the rebinding was sturdy and wonderful. Thank you for sharing this video. I am now on the prow for the very same bible if I can find one.
I just got my CBP Black Water Buffalo Thompson Chain Reference Bible in the mail today. The Black Water Buffalo Leather cover is amazing and it's Calfskin leather lined. The Kirkbride text block is pretty good. The paper is pretty decent and there's no smudges in the print and the font is nice and bold. I'm not crazy about all of the pronunciation marks or the red/pinkish text. It is what it is! I prefer Black Letter Text! All in all, it's a pretty decent Bible.
I just bought a Thompson chain fourth edition, I am very pleased with it , mine has a small to mid yapp, mine on the inside says Imported Morocco leather. It is from the 53rd printing.
Letter press Bible verses modern offset press. That is the standard calfskin edition. They use to offer three leathers. This the cheaper leather. The bonded leather was good lasting but did not handle freezing and warming. You had the black letter edition. They also had red letter at the time. I use to sell them.
So I actually just got to see this video today. I don't know just who were those people who sat down together and decided, "Hey, let's make the font slimmer and unreadable, choose an offensive red color, and print them on cheap paper, and put the label: 'Only the Finest Bible Materials.'"
Yup. That’s Kirkbrides attitude when they know they’re onto a good thing. Conversely you have people like Cambridge and TBS who take care and craft their Bibles beautifully. God bless brother!
Beautiful bible. What a treasure to have! I own a genuine leather Thompson Chain that I bought in 1994. It's quite nice and far better than anything Kirkbride put out in the last 20 years. It has been disappointing to see the quality decline and continue to decline with each year. I wish someone (like Zondervan) would put out a really nice edition of the Thompson.
this is great...……..lucky you. I have three Thompsons myself from your viewer in USA California North of Los Angeles...…...in case you wonder where some of your viewers live.
Beautiful old Bible. Kirkbride should return to their former ways. If Nelson can improve the quality of their Bibles so impressively, as they have of late, Kirkbride can too.
They are going to have the KJV in November 1, 2022 zondervan comfort print 6th edition and the premium edition just was wondering if you are going to have a new video on the 6th edition of Thompson chain reference in 2022 and your thoughts on the comfort print Thompson chain edition
What are your impressions of the quality of the chain Reference Thompson Bible Red Letter Edition (style 515)? I think it is a 1998 edition in hardcover. Thanks for your feedback.
Hi thanks for the comment! I can’t speak with any certainty as I’ve not seen it but it seems to me that older TCR’s are better print/paper combinations. My experiences with recent printings (2010 onwards) are extremely hit and miss and largely disappointing. Hope that helps!

Love your videos! Just wanted to ask you a quick question - I have an old copy of the 4th edition that I would like to get rebound. But I was wondering if the new 5th edition is worth picking up instead, just based on the new material alone? Can you speak to how much new content was added in the 5th edition?
I would say not, particularly as the 4th edition is so superb in terms of paper/print quality. Rebind it I would! I will do a video comparing the editions soon...
Burton Bibles Yes, that’s what I’m leaning toward! Especially with the beautiful bright red page ends on my copy. You don’t see that kind of vibrant use of color in modern bibles. Also love the vintage font. I look forward to your comparison video!!
I just got a 1964 chain Reference Thompson Bible Red Letter Edition for $2 at a thrift store. I am SO grateful. It's in near perfect condition. 😊
Wow that’s the find of the century! Well done! The 1964 is amazing. 👍 God bless
Bless your heart, I am looking for one now. One that I had since 1980. Missing/stolen.
It’s sad that the quality nowadays is not the same as it used to be. That is a neat old Bible. Thank you for sharing it with us.
No problem! Yes it’s lamentable. Hopefully they will realise and look to improve things, but I suspect costs are involved so I doubt it.
Burton Bibles yes sad but true...
What a wonderful treasure for you to keep. Thanks for showing us.
I could not agree more that old is better than new ones

I have the same bible in smaller print, red letter, given to me at a second hand shop.
I love it. It's in great shape.

It’s an amazing Bible! 👍👌
My 1964 Large Print came in never used and it is absolutely amazing.
Amen!
@@BurtonBibles LOL I just received another one in a black letter text standard size. What a treasure bro
They are wonderful. This is where Kirkbride need to get back to IMO
I have a hard back, third edition copyright 1957. 42nd printing
I have the hard back 1934 edition i think the chains are done differently today and easier to follow .

Nice one! The fourth edition and earlier 5th editions are the best 👍 anything from 2000 onwards can be very hit and miss in terms of quality 😩

Cool! Yes this 64 is WAY better than anything I’ve seen these days from Kirkbride. God bless
Beautiful old Bible. Kirkbride should return to their former ways. If Nelson can improve the quality of their Bibles so impressively, as they have of late, Kirkbride can too.
Amen to that brother!
Is there any major differences in a Thompson Chain original and the Thompson New Chain like the one in your video
I like the typography of the 4th ed. better than the 5th.
I hope the new printers offervno red letterings and in hardcover with large print.
My TCR has a really worn purple ribbon too.
Excellent! It popped up out of nowhere and seemed slightly out of context! God bless!
My copy is the 50th printing of the 4th edition.
Airik1111 has one of these in nearly pristine condition. You might want to take a look at his video. Clearly, they don't make 'em like they used to!
You are not wrong brother. I’m so close to giving up on this Bible!
I have a 64 on the way 😀
Excellent! You won’t be disappointed
I've got the same edition(not in as good ashape).Love the font!!
It’s a classic. A shame the modern editions don’t come close to the quality IMO. God bless and thanks for commenting! 👍

Yes I’d like to! Can’t wait.
@@BurtonBibles
I bought them on preorder when they come in November and the premium edition as well
NOw why can't someone print one like this!!!!
It’s about 40% thicker than the modern version. What does that tell you about the paper? 😀
You should get that rebound eventually brother. But the leather is really holding up.
Yes I agree! 👍
Everything was made better in the past not in 2000-currently very good shape for a Bible
I want to be guid With Thompson bible

Almost looks like sealskin. Inside left cover, gold lettering?
They just dont make them like that anymore. What a treasure.
Too true bro, I am so glad to have this! God bless bro
Is there any Thompson's Chain reference bible produced from the uk?
Not that I’m aware of! I Wilshere there was though!
If it’s not broken don’t fix it
They should have the same red letter as thr Cambridge bibles
Thankfully this ‘64 is a black letter though which I probably prefer to read from. God bless!
Cambridge Thompson????? Does Cambridge print Thompson Chain Reference Bible????
They used to under license through the old Eyre & Spttiswoode printers many years ago. Check out my channel for my review!
Look at the leather closely if you see pores then it's pigskin.
Do not make it like they use to
