This is one of my all-time favorite movies, and not because it's scary. Mostly because of the soundtrack, the set, landscape and the feeling. And honestly, they couldn't have cast better than Shelley Duvall.
This movie was a piece of art. Huge fan of Stephen king but the mini series was comical, it was more true to the book yes but it was not scary. Kubricks version truly messes with your mind and somehow makes you feel like you are isolated along with Danny and Wendy.
I hate to admit it but you are absolutely spot on. No one can touch my man Stevie for thrills, chills and highway spills. I agree. The mini-series was mediocre. I thought Steven Weber did pretty good as Jack Torrence, in his own right. In fact, he was the best part of the movie. The setting was pretty cool too. However, as you said, most of it was silly rather than scary. I still say The Shining: Mini-series was better than the Salem's Lot remake.
Yes! Even though the mini series is more violent and has more violence shown on screen, and the origional film only really has two instances of it actually happening, the film still feels more violent.

This is actually a religious text in Russian or Old Church Slavonic IIRC. I have it somewhere but cannot find it right now. It's funny how Kubrick kept using religious music for weird effects. Another Penderecki piece in "The Shining" is _Als Jakob erwachte_ (aka. _The Awakening of Jacob_ ) which is based on Genesis 28:16-17 and is dedicated by the composer to Prince Rainier III of Monaco! So much for corpses in bathtubs. And of course in _2001_ Kubrick used "Kyrie" from Ligeti's _Requiem_ for the monolith with the chorus singing, extremely slowly, "Kyrie eleison, Christe eleison".
I feel the chants/voices are connected to the Hotel being built on Indian ground. which is maybe why the hotel is the way it is because the Indians cursed it or something

Actually you should look up "The Screaming Skull" main theme, by Ernest Gold, 1958. I wonder if he got any credit. Edit: It's actually based on much older Gregorian chant Dies Irae, as are other later classical works. You learn new things every day.
And even more amazing that his music was not written for horror movies. These pieces were written in the 1960s. You know you are bad ass when horror movie directors are using your regular music for their scores.
Yeah this movie would have hardly any of the impacts that it has if it wasn't for the soundtrack. Whenever I visualize a scene in my head I usually hear the music in the background.
I saw this vinyl album in a Tucson record store ONE time, in 1996. I had no money, no credit cards, no way to pay for it then. A week later, I came back and it was gone. Still the most irksome moment of my music-loving life.
It took me several years to finally see why people love this movie so much, and it is a masterpiece of horror with an incredible soundtrack! Definitely one of the best horror movies ever made!

The background score is by far one of the best ever. It created the chills while watching this movie and added value to the movie.Forty years later, it still stands tall among the background scores.
1:20 This part honestly sound like a Native American chant as they charge into battle And remember that the overlook is build on an Indian burial ground and many natives tried to fight the people building the hotel
Probably one of the most horrifying sound track I ever heard! This is the true nature of horror, and the same cannot be said about the garbage movies that are made today!
This soundtrack is freaking amazing... from those days when the soundtracks were the key factor in making the movie even more horrifying. Some films the soundtracks were even scarier than the movie. I wouldn't dare listen to The Omen soundtrack alone in the dark.. that music is terrifying as hell.
The opening OST is what it is all about though, that is one hell of a track! Listening to this now on quality headset there are some background sounds I didn't notice before. There are creepy laughs, spoken words, screams and whispers in the background! Having watched the original on VHS when I was younger I never heard these sounds lol! I did watch the bluray but with volume lower.

Deus Ares.... This is a fascinating piece of music if you look into it. It's adapted for the opening but it's a really old piece and is often echoed in modern scores. The composers wilheim scream 😉
@@brianconnolly6551 Dies Irae (Day of Wrath en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dies_irae ) Used as the basis for the second sequence of the Latin Requiem Mass. Lots of composers have written famous versions in their settings. (Berlioz, Verdi, Mozart, etc.)
And the sad thing is, Warner Brothers haven't released the soundtrack since the original vinyl pressing due to "copyright issues" on an undisclosed track. Come on Warners! You have enough money to sort this out and get it released properly. However, if you want other people to profit from your ineptitude, then keep it up.
Back up there bonzo. Warners stole a lot of the music from other people's soundtracks and they weren't going to let them get away with it. Warners were known for stealing others' work and trying to make it their own. The music in question is the orchestral rendition used at the end of the movie. It didn't and doesn't belong to Warner.
Could actually have something to do with the artist and their very expensive lawyer. I’m sure the re-release is trying to generate revenue to pay for said lawyer.
Kubrick's use of existing music in his movies, going all the way back to 2001, was so perfect that I sometimes wonder whether he discovered the music first and then used it as inspiration for how he shot the scenes.
Well, Kubrick actually did commission an original soundtrack for "2001: A Space Odyssey" which you might be able to find here on RUclips. (Fair warning -- it's not bad but not as good as the pieces which Kubrick chose.) In the end, Kubrick decided that he preferred the classical pieces even though he originally had not intended them to be part of the score -- but sadly, he neglected to inform the composer that he would not be using the commissioned soundtrack and so the film's premiere was a devastating blow.
@Ed Felstein Yes, yes, yes! I just made a very similar comment above. Watch the beginning (and end) of Dr. Strangelove. The musical accompaniment makes the re-fueling of the B-52's look almost obscene. but the ending... PLEASE watch it
@@OreadNYC That would be his *Spartacus* composer Alex North, who indeed felt betrayed over the whole situation. He ended up reusing parts of the score for *Dragonslayer* years later, since there was no sense letting it go to waste.
@reidmason2551 Kubrick really had a habit of playing nasty tricks on people, didn't he? He pulled a similar stunt with George C. Scott on the set of "Dr. Strangelove." Scott (unlike Slim Pickens) was aware that Kubrick was filming a comedy but didn't want his character to be as over the top as Kubrick did. Kubrick asked Scott to do his scenes twice -- the first time Kubrick's way with Kubrick telling Scott it was just an exercise and the second time the way Scott wanted it. Scott didn't find out until later that Kubrick had lied to him and used the over the top versions in the final print. Scott vowed never to work with Kubrick again, and he never did.
Nothing is more haunting as those 20s songs that was put into this soundtrack. Kubrick and the crew did an amazing job with it! Best horror movie ever and always will be!
I hold the soundtrack as the "voice" of the Overlook Hotel.... as an example, the opening theme is the Hotel calling out to Jack & Danny... beckoning them... yearning to consume them... so, the Overlook Hotel is THE main antagonist whom manipulates Mr. Torrance via his denial of his Shine/psychic abilities, etc....normal individuals, void of the Shine, are unintentionally brought & bound in death to it.... the lingering malevolent being/lifeforce/spirit born of the past atrocities embodied in the enigmatic hotel... forever... and ever....and.... ever.
Totally Awesome, thank you! Like every Kibrick film, the music was already available and not written for the movie. Amazing how it all fits. Penderecki, a Polish composer, and his music make up most of the score.
Something sad about it though, that all the people, such as my grandparents and alike, who would go to balls and enjoy this genre of music are no longer, they lived their lives and made their choices, made their mistakes, loved, feared, the lot, and now no more. Both their once existence and passing seems to echo in such beautiful music. An era where people of educated (and even working) class would dress the part for their occasions, and act appropriately, and respect one another, and at a time just after what was a terrible war, and just before what was to become another one, everyone would truly make the most of every living joyous moment, be grateful for everything they had, and look after their loved ones as though it was their last day. This serves as a reminder of my gratitude to have been a descendant of them people, who I unfortunately never had the chance and pleasure to meet. A lot of basic values that now seem to be lost
Jack Nickleback is also in two of my other favorite movies. Nacho Libre and Paul Blart the mall cop. He also played a cameo on Shindlers list as a small girl in a red dress.
Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, were great in the Shining ,yes, but I also think Scatman Crothers( who played Dick Hallorann ) deserves mention. He played, in my opinion, an hilarious portrayal of night guard ,Turkle, in One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest( also starring Nicholson).
I really hate that he gets killed. The guy goes cross country, through a snow storm, to save Wendy and Danny and he gets killed before he's there ten minutes!
OMG that wailing and crying in that first piece makes the theory of the hotel being built on an Indian burial ground all the more plausible F'n creepy as hell
NoizyBoy201 i just got back from my grandmas condo complex thing... the power went out and everyone left because of a snowstorm. i was the only person there minus a receptionist at the front. but all i could think about was the main title song from this movie
My all time favorite horror film. An impeccable film, absolutely chilling and I think what makes it so chilling is how it is more about the traumatic effects of horror as opposed to jump scares. It feels so disturbing because it possesses an unnerving air of reality to it as if it could happen to anyone, in any given situation, at any time. I found this film to be absolutely horrifying because it's also dealing with a father who is a demented alcoholic with a murderous rage for his family. And what could be more chilling than that? The book was also quite terrifying as well.
This movie was an actual masterpiece! I’m usually apposed to book-movie adaptations, but this film took it further and beyond. I first watched it really young on television, I snuck downstairs in the late hours to watch the tv and this film was on. I was so fascinated by it, as strange as that sounds lol. I just never seen anything like it
The sense of isolation and foreboding this creates is remarkable. Truly brilliant in both conception and realization yet completely out of print. Sigh.
the shining is actually a masterpiece of modern horror, and I'll tell you why. 1) music: they are so creepy but at the same time very melodic; they make me feel nostalgic for a time where i have never lived (the 80's). some of them are love's song and they are so beautiful to listen, especially for the honeyed words that are in them. (in the main title you can actually hear some people screaming.. but if u check out "midnight, the stars and you", it makes me cry everytime i listen to it..) 2) the slow descent into madness: you can actually feel the suspence in the film, like if there's something wrong in the overlook. in some scene kubrick made chairs, paintings, carpets etc.. disappear to disorient who is watching the movie. have you ever looked jack torrance straight in the eyes? his madness in his eyes. i can feel it without even having to do it. shelley duvall did a fantastic performance too, but i feel very sorry for what kubrick's did to her to make just one scene.. see the movie and you'll understand what i mean. 3) the ending: the ending. one of the most iconic and terrifying ending of all the time. jack became part of the overlook, that's what the photo in the ending means. practically he will become the ghost that will lead the next caretaker to kill his family (like grady did with him in the film). a lot of my friends have never watched "the shining" before and, because of this, i'm very sad that they haven't already discovered a pearl of the cinema like this.

I feel the chants/voices are connected to the Hotel being built on Indian ground. which is maybe why the hotel is the way it is because the Indians cursed it or something
@@zachfierro7105 The Indian connection is interesting although (according to Kubrick's daughter Katharina) unintended. But one never knows about any artist's subconscious mind...

Penderecki is such an amazing composer, the fact he’s able to create such a sense of dread is crazy and it lends itself so much to the film
And even more amazing that his music was not written for horror movies. These pieces were written in the 1960s. You know you are bad ass when horror movie directors are using your regular music for their scores.

I wouldn't dare listen to The Omen soundtrack alone in the dark.. that music is terrifying as hell.
this movie was a piece of art, as almost everything stanley kubrick made. Every moment is astonishing, beautiful, memorable.
The opening OST is what it is all about though, that is one hell of a track!

Watched The Shining again and sound track is so underrated.
I hold the soundtrack as the "voice" of the Overlook Hotel.... as an example, the opening theme is the Hotel calling out to Jack & Danny... beckoning them... yearning to consume them... so, the Overlook Hotel is THE main antagonist whom manipulates Mr. Torrance via his denial of his Shine/psychic abilities, etc....normal individuals, void of the Shine, are unintentionally brought & bound in death to it.... the lingering malevolent being/lifeforce/spirit born of the past atrocities embodied in the enigmatic hotel... forever... and ever....and.... ever.

The ballroom music is the highlight of this classic.

The Shining is my favorite movie.
Greatest opening track of all time.
What about A Clockwork Orange opening theme?
My all time favorite horror film. An impeccable film, absolutely chilling and I think what makes it so chilling is how it is more about the traumatic effects of horror as opposed to jump scares. It feels so disturbing because it possesses an unnerving air of reality to it as if it could happen to anyone, in any given situation, at any time. I found this film to be absolutely horrifying because it's also dealing with a father who is a demented alcoholic with a murderous rage for his family. And what could be more chilling than that? The book was also quite terrifying as well.

the shining is actually a masterpiece of modern horror, and I'll tell you why.
1) music: they are so creepy but at the same time very melodic; they make me feel nostalgic for a time where i have never lived (the 80's). some of them are love's song and they are so beautiful to listen, especially for the honeyed words that are in them.
(in the main title you can actually hear some people screaming.. but if u check out "midnight, the stars and you", it makes me cry everytime i listen to it..)
2) the slow descent into madness: you can actually feel the suspence in the film, like if there's something wrong in the overlook.
in some scene kubrick made chairs, paintings, carpets etc.. disappear to disorient who is watching the movie.
have you ever looked jack torrance straight in the eyes? his madness in his eyes.
i can feel it without even having to do it.
shelley duvall did a fantastic performance too, but i feel very sorry for what kubrick's did to her to make just one scene..
see the movie and you'll understand what i mean.
