My Neighbour ran into Charlie Watts taking an afternoon stroll on Yonge St. a few hours before their last concert in Toronto. ... He told me how he FROZE in shock and said, "Is it really YOU?" ... Charlie belly laughed and said, "Yes Mate, any idea where I can get a pint of Guinness around here?" .... My friend pointed to the bar across the street and Charlie invited him to join him. ... They had a pint and a half hour chat, my friend told me he was the nicest man he EVER met. ... THAT was Charlie Watts.

I went through exactly the same mid-80's and almost lost everything too. Funnily enough, my path crossed Charlie's about then (he poured me a pint in an hotel bar after the barman had gone to bed... long story).
I straightened out, recovered, then had the most horrific accident which left me severely crippled... and lost everything. Sometimes you just can't win!

I agree. The vulnerability showed when he said ' he had nearly lost everything' when talking about his drug taking. @@monkeyrevolution1964 He means he is opening up about very bad times in his life when he fucked up. A lot of blokes can’t admit they have screwed up: the whole macho thing. It takes guts to publically bare one’s soul like that. And a lot of rockers are vulnerable. Money and success does not always bring happiness and touring is fucking hard work living in countless hotel rooms. The classical guitarist Christopher parkening in his autobiography says he had a meltdown over it. That is why so many turned to booze and drugs: Elton John another who has been honest about this.

Here, here. Charlie's roots were in jazz so he was a double threat. He once punched Mick and reminded him that HE was the drummer and that Mick was HIS singer. Sartorially splendid and invested his wealth well. I still think of what Brian Jones, the founder who was Mick's angelic twin at the outset, could have achieved if he did not throw his talent away. And leave behind heartbroken women and lost children in a "unliberated" era. Gail W., USA Midwest.

They made the right choice when they chose Charlie over Ginger Baker. What a classy & talented person he was!!!! In later years Keith would not tour unless Charlie agreed to tour as well. Love the story behind "It's Only Rock & Roll - But I Like It" inspired by a reply comment Charlie made before loading a tour bus.

I think a good rhythm section mostly stays in the background. That's just how it is. They keep the band together, not just in timing, but groove and on and off the road. The only rhythm section that came close was AC/DC's. While Bon Scott or Brian Johnson was out front with Angus Young, it was his brother rhythm guitarist Malcolm, with drummer Phil Rudd and bassist Cliff Williams who kept the band's tight groove that put a tingle into you.
Without Charlie and Bill, Mick and Keith would not be able to shine.

Drug use among musicians is older than recorded music itself. I always found it amazing how Lemmy from Motörhead said he never touched heroin. He used copious amounts of LSD while young only but pretty much his whole life he treated amphetamine like an office worker treats coffee and he drank whisky like it was water. But he said about heroin "that's the one that kills you" and he never touched it. Probably also because it killed his one and only true love.

True old school musician and epitome of the true English gent and my favourite Stone . Not met him ( wish I had) but got friends who live near his farm in Devon and they say he was a quiet, unassuming and very down earth bloke who would nevertheless stop and chat and was not affected or up himself in any way.

He may not have imagined why girls were screaming at him, and I understand that shyness, my brother is like that too, but I also reacted to him vocally when I heard of his passing: I didn't scream though, I cried. Why? Because the music he helped so much to propel has really helped propel me through nearly my entire life, from age 10 on. Thank you for that musical gift, Mr. Watts, sir! (Hint to everybody: Y'all listen to "2021 South Michigan Ave." incredible jam to hear him bang it all together.)
