    I absolutely love this piece. I was beyond happy when you added the project files on Patron which has had the added benefit of helping me learn and explore the possibilities of my Oxi and the Blackbox. More please!

    There are very few videos that make me push the reload button and appreciate it twice... or three times even. This is one of them.
    This music is a testament to your skills but also to the joy of sequencing the OXI One and sending its notes to the 1010 box. Impressive.

    Did you use granular mode in the blackbox?
    I'm would like to get a sampler... Please tell me what do you think about S-4 and the Blackbox

      Thanks !!
      I haven't done much work on the granular mode of the blackbox so far. The blackbox seems especially useful when working with loops/clips ... like in ableton. Sound design possibilities are quite limited but as a simple sample player / clip launcher the blackbox is great. S4 on the other hand is perfect for shaping samples/loops into something completely different. “Sculpting sampler” sums it up very well. But even if what you can already do with it is a lot of fun, the S4 is definitely still in a beta stage and feels very unfinished.

    Still have the hapax or got rid of it for
    Oxi?

    • @substan_music
      @substan_music  2 месяца назад +2

      I still have the Hapax. Even though the OXI is a really inspiring sequencer, it can't really replace the Hapax. Hapax is so much more powerful in almost every area... it just doesn't have these unusual and creative sequencer modes, the great chord mode of the oxi and isn't really portable... and isn't nearly as beautiful a device (externally) 🙈

    • @CiabaMusic
      @CiabaMusic 2 месяца назад

      @@substan_musicso chord mode is that better on the Oxi? I'm curious to know how does the two compare on the isomorphic keyboard aspect too, I find the Hapax incredibly inspiring on that mode,and I guess part of that is about the nice feeling I get from the pads. Are the Oxi pads/buttons comparable? And what about key combos and general workflow?
      Sorry for all the questions, but owning the Hapax and the Torso T1 I'd like to know if the Oxi would be a nice addition or a not much needed middle ground between the other boxes.
      P.s.
      Really great track, as usual! 😎

      @@CiabaMusic I played around with the chord mode on the Hapax a bit but never really saw a point in using it (even though I don't know much about music theory) ... didn't inspire me to look into it further. I'm sure I'm missing out on its appeal because I've ignored it so far.
      On the OXI I was immediately inspired by the chord mode. On the left side you have the keyboard and on the right you modify the chords ... and there is a kind of “auto mode” that leads very quickly to the next suitable chord ... which the Hapax doesn't have (I think). But what's great about the OXI is that you can pick out nice chords one by one and save them to “user slots” to create a nice selection for the piece. The buttons feel quite similar ... but are smaller, have a little more travel and are therefore a little “wobbly” ... but feel good.
      The workflow and general operation is MUCH more intuitive and direct on the Hapax (which also has considerably more buttons). You can certainly work very smoothly with the OXI, but the learning curve and the button combinations to be memorized are much more intensive.
      What really stands out with the oxi are the various very inspiring sequencer modes and diverse generative possibilities. In this respect, the Hapax can't quite keep up, but the T1 will certainly already provide you with some of this (I've never had it in my hands). In any case, the OXI looks beautiful to me, highest build quality, is, unlike the hapax portable, has a built-in battery and 8 times cv and gate ... but compared to the hapax it is more of a specialist than an all-rounder

      @@substan_music thanks a lot for taking the time! You seem to draw a very similar picture to what are also my thoughts about this lovely machines, at least for what I saw and touched first hand. The Oxi is clearly the jack of all trades of modern sequencers: it can be deterministic or really unpredictable, it's extremely portable but can cope with a focused studio layout, it can speak to eurorack stuff and midi equally well... But, as you wrote, it maybe push you to use it in a more focused manner, picking up a trick or two from its sleeve and using just them, to avoid getting lost in its quirky workflow
      If there is one thing I'd ideally borrow from the Oxi to Hapax is the pitch "p locking" function on the multitrack sequencer. It would be so much better being able to sequence Elektron boxes that way from the 8 row drum sequencer of the Hapax!
      Chord modes seemed very similar between both machines, nice to see them being so different in a real world use. And that's fun to see a "pick your chords" function pretty similar to the one in the former Squarp machine (Pyramid) that's now missing on their new flagship! And speaking of which, I'm trying a couple of different approaches for that very task either for the T1 and the Hapax. I bought a Roland J6 to use it as an added hardware "chord sequencing midi interface" and I downloaded just yesterday scaler2 on my iPad to achieve the same thing in software form (but still portable)
      I'm trying to downgrade, musical gear wise, and with a couple of Elektrons sitting beside it, the Hapax is not getting used so much lately, but I would be really hard pressed to part ways with it, too much powerful and refined I would instantly miss it, but I guess I need to grab an Oxi One sooner or later, you can't have too much sequencer, right? :)
      P.s. Waiting for my Torso S4 by the end of the week! batch 2 finally delivering 🤩
      P.s. Still looking forward about Digisphere II 😁

    Nice song! ...Honestly, though, I didn't like the sounds. I kinda hate to say it, but: that would have sounded so much better with a different synth.
    The programming of the song, though, was very "you" and I really dig it. If that was all in the OXI (seems like a cool unit), it would be interesting to hear this song again, driving a different synth. ...The Digi* might be too obvious (plus, why would you use an external sequencer?) ... but do you still have, say, the Hydrasynth? Could be fun to hear the difference.
    Sorry. Maybe it's just me, then. ...Personal opinion, anyway.
    Either way, eep it up, though, you're great!

    • @substan_music

      Thanks Jeremy !!
      I can understand your perspective. While I was working on this track, I actually wished I had started with a different sound generator a few times. For the first track, I wanted a partner that was as "simple" and small as possible so that I could concentrate fully on the sequencer... and that could be played polyphonically. I'm actually quite happy with the sounds, as they are samples of my own patches (also Hydrasynth), but in contrast to these, samples are just snapshots and quite lifeless. Using an LFO per sample can only breathe life into the samples to a limited extent. The reverb on the black box is also OK, but quite sterile. All in all, the black box shines, especially when you work with loops and long samples... which I didn't do in this case.
