This song is exactly the point where i started to listen to Death and death metal genre since i hated those vocal styles (maybe the most difficult Death album to get into, because of all the features it had: signature tempos really threw me off at first). It's still the only death metal band i appreciate. You could imagine the difficulty of getting into it when Metallica or Slayer were the metal bands i was more familiar with. Then i fell in love with it, riffs and solos had a huge part in making me not willing to quit. So i understand everything you said after the song. After The Philosopher i randomly started to listen to other songs from other albums so i haven't followed a particular order and noticed major sound changes that are clear as daylight now. I did that with Metallica for example but backwards and absolutely unintentionally, from their catchy black album stuff i heard in music videos to Kill 'Em All. The sound changes were much more noticeable, as i was skipping from black album to And Justice For All i started thinking "wow, these guys are getting better and better!". The same happened when i jumped from that to Master Of Puppets. You can guess that wasn't a good thing. Then i wondered "why do these guys get better and better as i listen to their discography but backwards?" and i found out about Cliff Burton's death. To this day i still believe that's the reason why Metallica declined heavily in like 5 years. Generally i absolutely love every single Death record (NEVER could say the same for Metallica). Individual Thought Patterns and The Sound Of Perseverance are, in my opinion at least, the hardest Death albums to jump into for different reasons.

T, there’s another band called Death you should check out. It’s a punk band, but one that was way ahead of its time, making 80’s-style punk in the mid 70’s, when the earliest forms of the punk rock genre (other than Sex Pistols) were just starting to pop up. Politicians in My Eyes is a good starter, or Freakin’ Out, or Let the World Turn Around.
They have an interesting history. They were a band of black brothers trying to get signed to a record label, but their race, combined with the fact that they insisted on not changing the difficult-to-market name “Death”, meant they never got off the ground. But a documentary was made about them several years ago that brought their story and music to light. Super interesting stuff.

I love the guitar solo on this one. Individual Thought Patterns might be my 2nd favorite Death album behind Symbolic.
    Probably their best lineup.
    Gene Hoglan on drums.
    Steve DiGiorgio on bass.
And King Diamond's guitarist Andy LaRocque.
They have some truly insane moments on the album, with the song "Trapped In A Corner" having IMO some of the greatest solos ever.
I dig this song; though I will say in a rare instance for Death's music... The lyrics kind of enhance this one for me.
Bizarrely it's a Death Metal diss track towards Paul Masvidal (former member of Death and lead member of Cynic).
Maybe you'd dig the other ones on the album. It might just depend on which era of Death you prefer though. The technical and progressive later era, or the barbaric early era.

'Individual thought patterns' is still a shredding record, but Chuck Schuldiner backed off on death metal in 1993, and started to push more technical aspects of extreme metal... so yeah, it sounded different from 'Leprosy'... Chuck was a huge King Diamond fan and got their lead guitarist Andy LaRoque to play lead guitar on 'Individual thought patterns'... legendary drummer Gene Hoglan (Dark Angel, Strapping Young Lad, Dethklok, Testament, Fear Factory...) played on it w/ Steve DiGiorgio (bass) from the band Sadus, later played w/ Testament, Dragonlord, etc... recently toured as "Death to all" w/ former Death members paying tribute to Death.

At first I was like wtf how did he not like this song? and then I kept watching and I got your point. It's completely valid. But for Death fans (back then even more so), that was the magic: to watch and listen to them grow, evolve and not rest on their laurels. Sure they lost some power, darkness and overall atmospheric feeling of oppressive, raw aggression. But they gained a lot more, which for me (and for a lot of fans), was something needed in death metal in general. Experimentation, challenging songwriting and skills development, making its way into something as brutal as the genre. A lot of bands wanted to sound like the pioneers, so I think it's only natural that they originators wanted to evolve, so they didn't sound like any other band. That's why Carcass, Morbid Angel (to name just two examples) sound so much different and interesting in subsequent albums. Anyway, nice reaction! I digged it

It's all very well comparing Death to the sound of other bands, but some of those bands you named are later. Mastodon is from the end of the 90s and Death is a band founded in 1984, when Thrash was just exploding. So, it's fair to say that Death is by no means a standard band and less on this album, which is the most progressive and experimental they have. I mean, Death influenced all the bands that came out after, including Mastodon. Mastodon's sound is similar to Death's and not the other way around. It's like saying "your dad looks like you" instead of saying "you look like your dad".
Greetings, you are a capo because you listen to a lot of Metal and you are really a metalhead, it is not only that you listen to listen, but that you really analyze the music because it is obvious that you like the genre and you give it its due place in your daily life.
PS: from this same album I recommend Overactive Imagination and Jealousy.

They got less raw and more technical, progressive and melodic with each album. No album sounds the same, but they're all almost equally awesome in what they do.

Most people that like this song probably play an instrument and get into the technical aspects of playing. There are way too many changes and fills for someone not into that to enjoy.

Don't think so, since leprosy was already about philosophical views and life. It probably sounded even harder death metal than scream bloody gore, but the theme of the lyrics already changed.

Bro, You disliking this song isn't a bad thing at all
I personally think that later death isn't the best and it isn't my thing
You look like you would love the more old school primitive atmospheric stuff like Venom, Hellhammer, Possessed, Sepultura, Sarcófago, Blasphemy and those old school black/death metal bands
    Death is still amazing though
    RIP Chuck

Slaughter (from Canada, ofc) is better than Death, imo; Chuck was for a short time involved with them.
One of them told me they had to change their name because of the American glam band that came out around the same time.
    Slaughter - Parasites
... just listen to the riff in the first few seconds. 1986 I think.

Do you like Thrash metal? Do you also like Gojira? Well I wanna recommend to you a really good French Progressive Thrash Metal band called Arcania, I describe them as "If Gojira made Thrash Metal".
I recommend starting with their song called "Dreams Are Dead", these guys are incredible musicians and songwriters. If this sounds appealing to you, please check them out sometime. Great reaction as usual brotha! 🤘🤘🤙🤙

I do love ITP, but the philosopher is my LEAST favorite in the album. I don't know why, it never really clicked for me. I appreciate it, but it isn't my go-to song in the album.
I do not think a bad Death album (or song) exists, they all are different from each other. For example, my least favorite Death album is probably Symbolic. (Doesn't mean it's bad in any way.) Some people will agree, others will disagree, and I can see why.
