Due to the fact that they needed to edit most of the songs to fit the time frame, there were not enough emotion building and therefore most of the songs were a bit lacking comparing to the original editions. That being said, Philip Quast was one of the very few performers back then that are still capable of delivering the same amount of passion when they took the stage... and that shows the true color of an brilliant singer. :)

Concept: we can pay a compliment to Philip Quast's magnificent performance without bashing Russell Crowe. To insult Russell Crowe's performance is to undermine every Javert to have been and to be henceforth. This is not an easy role by any means - the behemoth of emotions and nuance delivered in each phrase is extraordinarily difficult. Just because some people (*ahem* Philip, Norm) pull it off effortlessly does not mean it is necessary to publicly defame others by way of compliment. Appreciate the effort put into each complicated iteration, because a hell of a lot of effort is put forth to play this character. I enjoy Russell Crowe's Javert, just in different ways than I enjoy Philip Quast's Javert.

The usual question: Why wasn't he cast in the movie? Answer: They wanted a famous name. R.C. could've been great (he and Philip look alike) if he hadn't sung every song note by note without emotion. But besides that the directing and conducting was so poor that a real Les Miz fan can't help but shake her head. To me it was obvious that the director had not the slightest idea about musicals and their adaption to screen. He should've watched the Dreamcast and the 1998 movie.
The movie was kakka poo poo...couldn't have been worse. I saw the original cast in SF in '89; wish I could have a DVD of that performance. Too awesome to express in words.

They should’ve switched out Eponine for a famous face to compensate for bringing Quast in, in my humble opinion. Because, unquestionably, Quast is the definitive and only Javert. He both nailed and claimed the character - and he’s alive. Under those circumstances, it’s a farce for the role in the movie to have gone to anyone else!

A more pensive, inner thought Javert, which explains his lack of boomy voice. To me Quast's Javert is determined and has resolve and is angry at Valjean - Crowe's Javert is more twisted; has doubts, is reflecting and wonders if he is righ. - So of course there is no climax, no strength. - On the other hand I think I might like the "determined Javert" more for this song / in the context of the song.

I know he is, but they've still aged the same amount as time's gone on. Valjean and Javert are roughly 11 years apart, Colm and Philip are 13 years apart (unless my maths is wrong XD).
